Pelicot trial

The various responses to this are both interesting and revealing.

Another subject which has attracted a lot of media attention, but so far as I remember no comment here, are the activities of Andrew Tate and his brother. When some of his hyper macho attitudes are matched with far right politics, both of which resonate with views expressed by some posters here, you have to wonder why this is.

Andrew Tate is seemingly very popular with a substantial number of today’s young men. So much so that teachers are being tasked with countering his messaging.

The Pelicot case seems to me to display male attitudes that are echoed in the ideas of Tate. Ideas that have found homes in some of our youth, which isn’t healthy.
No you don’t, no one has to do anything of the kind.

I find it bizarre that you haven’t ‘followed this story’ as you put it. For someone, who likes to lecture this forum about all things ‘current affairs’, not to be aware of this story is quite remarkable. It was huge when it broke a few years ago and the trial itself has been ongoing for over 3 months, with a significant amount of International media attention.

For me personally, I was more shocked when the story and details were first revealed. The trial itself had less of an impact because by then Mr. Pelicot had admitted his guilt. It was then just a case as to whether any of those co-accused would be found not guilty because of the individual defences they had put forward. That they were ALL found guilty, each and every one of them, was interesting.

I was already well aware of the demographics of the co-defendants because I had followed the case throughout and the names of the accused had been widely reported. The range of ages and diverse backgrounds I did find unusual but then nothing about this case has ever been easy to comprehend.

Car driven into crowd at German Christmas market - not much coverage on here about it W - why do you think that is?

That has really pissed the left off - not due to the deaths and injuries but because it reminds everyone of the true and real situation we find ourselves in. Can't even celebrate f***ing Christmas without looking over our shoulders for the radical enemies we literally pay to come and show their hatred for us.

Not at all.

Given the likely assumptions that would be drawn from those names it makes it more likely that the regular posters here would be all over it, but they weren't.

Not really, there was a very wide cross section of suspects / co defendants and there are still many perpetrators unidentified.

You’ve said yourself you were unaware of the case and haven’t followed it so stop with the pathetic attempts to provoke a response when it is very apparent that you don’t know what you are commenting on!

It's become a sort of Christmas tradition.

The fact that I wasn’t doesn’t mean I haven’t read about it since! Nor does it preclude me from countering the suggestion that the only reason it has received attention was because all the perpetrators were “white”, when that appears unlikely to be true.

Maybe you need to take greater care to understand a comment before commenting on it!

This article might help explain why this case raises the questions it does. Not just for the French but for us too.

Dismiss it if you wish. I expect some will, given their attitudes. Those that do are part of the problem and not the solution:-

There was a similar case quite a long time ago. If I were to guess the name it's something like Dawes. It was where a guy would recruit people down the pub and he told them his missus was into it. It could be 70s, maybe early 80s. I can't remember the full outcome. The husband was certainly imprisoned - couldn't say for the others.

I don't think anyone could argue too much with that article, I remember reading an article by an academic , must be some 30 years ago (certainly when internet p*** started becoming a thing), where he claimed that the more the boundaries of what was 'acceptable' in pornography moved, the boundaries of sexual acceptability would also move likewise. Well, he wasn't wrong!

The one thing about this case that really puzzles me is how it took Mrs. P the best part of a decade to realize that a) she was being drugged into unconsciousness, which always leaves after effects and b) how she didn't realize that she had been sexually assaulted, seemingly most likely in an 'aggressive' manner - which will also leave after effects of a different kind.
