Pelicot trial

I will add that unequivocally, everyone on this site is disgusted by this crime and it's probably good that it gets publicity. Some twisted people out there.

I'm now wondering are you trying to say that people here would somehow condone the crime? That is certainly not the case. I don't think you meant that but do wonder now.
There's not really a left and right divide here in this case is there? I fail to see it.
We know he’s pissed because we can’t rattle a Muslim. Over here it is mainly Muslim perpetrators of mass rape but he doesn’t comment on a specific like that as then to him it’s not the colour or religion which matters; it’s just a crime committed by another villain.
Clearly has a short memory !!!

The framing of this thread is a bit odd. It's a truly despicable and almost unbelievably depraved crime, which doesn't leave much room for debate or alternative opinions. I trust Wisbech is not implying that those who hold right of centre views are supporters of rape ? That would be pretty extreme even for left-wingers who sometimes appear unable to understand that more right wing views are not motivated by immorality, but by reality and practicality.

If a certain poster is concerned about a news story then start a thread, which they did. Don't complain that others have not already done so.

As other posters have mentioned France and Spain seem to be way behind us in attitudes to consent and also the law and this crime was horrific. At the end of the day though they are not the UK.
I hadn’t followed this story or been using the site very much recently. I have more pressing commitments. When I read the headlines this morning I wondered how it would be treated here and was surprised to see nothing. It seemed rather more important than some of the lightweight stuff that gets pages of outrage.

Hence the thread.

It was a horrible crime and she is a brave lady. Hopefully the exposure of the details will cause any others facing similar temptations in the future to remember what the outcome was for these guys and walk away. People do stupid things, especially when under the influence, so having this lesson lodged in the memory can only be for the good.

That’s a truly ignorant comment.

Anyone convicted of rape deserves severe punishment. Their background or religion have absolutely no bearing on that.

Concentrate on the crime alone. I don’t think there was any mention of the ethnicity or religion of any involved in the case in France. Quite rightly so.

This is all over the news but I must admit whenever I've seen a headline I just haven't had the interest to look into it.

All I know is what I've read on this thread.

I think the left going so hard on the story has put me off reading about it.....the virtue signalling and misandry (especially if the perpetrator is a white straight male) that infects so much of their worldview tends towards a field day whenever you get cases like this.

However, that's not to say that anyone who has genuinely raped should escape the law. It's a horrific crime and against civilisation.

I shouldn't have to say that but I'm aware that you get unhinged criticisms sometimes that suggest that you support something like rape if you differ in anyway with a perspective.

Oh don’t pull that old chestnut. You know exactly what I meant !!!

The various responses to this are both interesting and revealing.

Another subject which has attracted a lot of media attention, but so far as I remember no comment here, are the activities of Andrew Tate and his brother. When some of his hyper macho attitudes are matched with far right politics, both of which resonate with views expressed by some posters here, you have to wonder why this is.

Andrew Tate is seemingly very popular with a substantial number of today’s young men. So much so that teachers are being tasked with countering his messaging.

The Pelicot case seems to me to display male attitudes that are echoed in the ideas of Tate. Ideas that have found homes in some of our youth, which isn’t healthy.

For a detailed description of these read this. It’s a long but worthwhile analysis of this man.

We're far too xenophobic to listen to Andrew Tate.

The silence on the French case speaks volumes. No one believes any of what happened to this lady is in any way correct and all of the men involved have earned what’s coming to them. Why does that need a comment. It seems your brain is a bit of if you’re not with me blah blah.
My point stands that because no non whites were involved you are intimating a racist attitude with no comments being an admittance of such.

General Franco was right-wing. And he used muslim Rape gangs to terrorise villagers during the Spanish Civil War.
I cannot ever remember the BBC telling me that story. Nor the rape gangs of Josef Stalin.

I would be the first to accept that there are monsters on both the Left AND the Right. It seems the more extreme the ideology, the more obnoxious the levels of criminality.

I wonder would the Pelicot trail have got so much publicity had the crime happened in, say, Bradford ?

Actually, among the 50 convicted were: Nizar Hamidi, Karim Sebaoui, Ahmed Tbarik, Mohamed Rafaa, Mahdi Daoudi, Omar Douiri, Hassan Ouamou, Redouane El Farihi.

You would need to be extremely old and have a wonderful recall of what the BBC reported at the time to be sure the BBC did not report it—no website back then, so no chance of checking.

When something is historical it isn't news any more so why expect the BBC to cover it? That is the role of documentaries. Have they made one themselves?

This is a current case. It's news. It gets covered.

Crimes like this always get well covered, wherever they happen. Despite some perceptions.
