Pelicot trial

The verdicts and sentences have been given and the rapists are on their way to serve long periods in jail.

What though I find remarkable, in this forum, is that this case has not, until now, merited any discussion at all.

Why do you think this is?

Maybe it is because it was such an open and shut case. The vile actions of the rapists were recorded for all to see. There was no element of "my word against hers" or "I believe consent was given".

I am hoping that the despicable actions of these people are so bad that no-one on here can entertain the notion that they are defensible in any way.

What a brave woman Giselle Pelicot is.

I have seen a lot of this on the Spanish media, who regard France as a country lagging behind many western countries, there is no Consent law in Frances rape law, and Dominique Pelicot the Husband has a history of similar crimes, and all of this would not have come out had he not been caught Up skirting in a shop in France by the security guard in 2020, that law only came out in France in 2018.

you organise one gang-rape and you, rightly, go to jail. For a long time. You organise a thousand gang rapes and ? you get some kind of a medal ? Well, at least one of the fellas in the photo below...... And the old defence 'it was a time of War' doesn't really wash. VE day, VJ day, we defeated tyranny and replaced it with what exactly ?
in 1939 to 1945 we were told Uncle Joe was helping us to defeat tyranny. Reminds me of the slogan on the streets of Berlin in early 1945......"you had better enjoy the War now cos the Peace will be horrific"

gang rape. I struggle to imagine a more horrific invention of humans. Except that it seems to pre-date the arrival of Homo Sapiens onto the scene.

Whilst true this has some very serious overtones that have resonance here too which are getting reported, yet not discussed here or, apparently, in other forums. Even it seems by our female members.
I don't really see how they have resonance here. Our laws changed some time ago - in Ireland in around the late 80s - early 90s - so about 40 years ago.
I get the feeling the first "spousal rape' cases well predate that. I couldn't say for sure but suspect something like the 40s or 50s for serious consideration. Although there were probably common law cases right back to Mediaeval times - for, shall we say, better off ladies.
If you want us to get all uppity about the French, I'm pretty sure that will not be hard for us.
Here's a couple for you: "Cheese eating surrender monkeys", Dylan Moran.

Or: as rumours of WWIII intensify, white flag factories in France have gone into overdrive. With only a four hour break in a five hour day, French factory workers have produced tens of flags in the past few weeks. Let's all hope and pray they don't need to use them.

If a certain poster is concerned about a news story then start a thread, which they did. Don't complain that others have not already done so.

As other posters have mentioned France and Spain seem to be way behind us in attitudes to consent and also the law and this crime was horrific. At the end of the day though they are not the UK.

I will add that unequivocally, everyone on this site is disgusted by this crime and it's probably good that it gets publicity. Some twisted people out there.

I'm now wondering are you trying to say that people here would somehow condone the crime? That is certainly not the case. I don't think you meant that but do wonder now.
There's not really a left and right divide here in this case is there? I fail to see it.
