PALACE V CHELSEA MATCH THREAD

I was sitting in the Main Stand towards the Holmesdale.
In the second half I really admired the work of Sarr and Munoz.
They played with pace and intensity in the second half which Chelsea struggled to deal with.
Imagine if we could replicate that down our left side which is comparatively insipid.
I would also highlight the contribution of Lerma.
He's not the best passer of the ball (aside from a couple of long range switches), but my word he more than compensates with his other contribution.

Mitchell isa decent defender but offers nothing going forward, EZE is clearly carrying an injury, he is slow in getting back and doesn't burst forward as quickly as he was last season.
I'm still baffled as to why Kamada gets an appearance, he flatters to deceive

Doesn’t Mitchell have more assists this season than Munoz? He gets so much criticism that I think is unfair. The team as a whole has struggled for goals

I understand the rivalry but it really doesn’t bother me. There are numerous teams I hate more. Utd, Everton, Liverpool, Chelsea ad nauseum

I’m exactly the same.

The rivalry with BHA is not something I’d begrudge another Palace fan but it’s a bit ‘pantomime’ for me.

I have a more contemporary hatred in my heart for a number of sides/fan groups these days! Even Watford still qualify 😡

Exhilarating entertainment. Individual talents with Chelsea reflect the money spent. We could barely hold the ball first half but we matched them as a team second half. Saar and Munoz are excellent together. Mateta was a beast. Guehi back to his best and dacoure on the way. OG has improved a lot of players Mitchell doing his limited best. Lerma the same. Must have been exhausting chasing Chelsea shadows first half. Well done Palace. What a performance. Hope the board will show support to glasner in next 2 transfer windows COYP!

getting Sarr to drop deep in the second half and Munoz to press higher worked well. Tactically that was great from Glasner as we all see sarr as someone who likes to run on to the ball rather than have it at his feet.
Having no Hughes and Chalobah and to still get a point is a good result.
Thanks for this! Hard to see what changes Glasner made from the usual limited highlights on MoTD and of course while they referred to “the changes” briefly they didn’t explain what they were. Why would they? It’s only Palace!

Yes typical Danny Murphy analysis on MOTD who completely failed to analyse why things changed in the second half or to point out that the goal was coming for a while with several similar moves created by the deployment of Munoz, Sarr, Mateta and Eze as a pressing and progressing unit ..fantastic coordinated team play. It’s almost like Murphy had a script and could not address the changes in the game away from that script to explain the result.

Ye sarr dropping deep nullified there midfield threat and drawed there left full back outta position a lot. Which meant also Sancho had to defend a lot more in the second half.

I think comments about Mitchell are fair in the sense that’s he’s a good player but not brilliant going forward. Very good defensively. Simple really. The way we play with wing-backs he needs to up his game a bit or drop back and make way for a better January transfer.

Why do people get so animated when comments are made about the man? Very odd.

About Mitchell, As much as we bemoan his crossing and some of his passing on occasions, boy can that lad defend. Very rarely does he loose a duel against his opposite number. Usually the longer the match progresses the less effective they become. Maybe this system isn't an ideal fit for him, but he gives it everything without much credit.

I concur with the comments about Mitchell. I feel he will be a player we won't notice how good he is defensively till he has gone. He has consistently kept quality players like Saka and Salah quite over the last few season's, provides cover on the break when we have a corner.

If Guehi goes I wonder if Mitchell could replace him on the left of the back three

In the first 30 minutes Chelsea looked like a Champions League team, assured and confident in possession with out team seemingly in awe.
I looked back on previous times and longed for a Zaha who would somehow drag us back into the game.

Well who should step up but Munoz.

A totally different type of player to Zaha, but Munoz played with such enthusiasm and zest in the second half that it seemed to infect the rest of the team who correspondingly raised their game.

I was on side of the pitch in the second half and he won a few tackles he had no right to win and Chelsea couldn't deal with his forward bursts and link up with Sarr.
It reminded me of his impact at the end of last season, and I really hope he can maintain this form.

You must of missed it, he clearly said in the second half Munoz was pushed further forward and Sarr came more central, which pushed Palace further forward.
We dont need analysis, we can see ourselves.

I must admit I’ve lost track of the number of games we have started poorly this season. It almost takes half a game to work out what is going on with the opposition and we are quite often down before we respond.

Munoz was spectacular second half and I think his performance reflected Glasner’s philosophy that if you are attacking as a wingback then their wingers are forced into doing some defending themselves and you have effectively stifled their game.

The second half was a good watch. Most of the first half was painful. It rather sums up the highs and lows of being a Palace fan in one game.
