Palace team vs SC Freiburg

Mr Hodgson to me !
The gentleman of a certain vintage (Late 70s) who messaged me recently opining that the club should have appointed Dyche probably believes that his preferred one will replace Sage if our current manager's tenure is ephemeral. He would be doing cartwheels if he wasn't so doddery !
I hate to admit it and I know it’s far too early to be talking about that, but I’m sure a chaotic disjointed mess of a start with Dyche coming in to try and sort it out is not an unbelievable senario 😩

From the first interview I heard of his I thought he doesn’t exactly fill you full of confidence. He doesn’t come across as the sort of personality that the players are going to give their all for when they’re out on the pitch.
I know 100% commitment should be a minimum, but that extra bit of fire in their bellies and that willingness to die for the shirt coming from the sheer force of nature and personality of your manager might be a tad lacking with this fella
Maybe look at his record in France and his team talks there ? Plenty of firing the players up.

Indeed. Would anyone say Spain’s manager was a motivational fire brand? Nope but he’s just seen Spain win two major tournaments and set an unbeaten record for a European team.

There are many routes to coaching success. Look at Warnock and Wenger. I know who came across as a motivator and I know who used tactical knowledge to go a whole EPL season undefeated

Dyche gave Dwight McNeil his debut at Burnley as a teenager and McNeil played in over 100 games under Dyche at the club.

He sounds fed up and frustrated to me. Not a motivational speaker and unfortunately he does not speak English as well as Glasner.

I just hope he can generate more lively encouragement in the players than he does in me. Not impressed by him yet.

I guess you could also add his team were well beaten by a much more organised side. After that performance, I’m not sure anyone would expect him to be ‘upbeat’ in an interview.

"Not ready to play" with the PL starting next weekend is a tad concerning.
Sage does not have an effervescent personality, he does appear somewhat dour, hopefully he is more motivational amongst his players.

It’s easy to look at Palace’s performance against Freiburg and simply say it was poor because, frankly, it was.

I can understand players not wanting to go flying into challenges or risk picking up an injury just before the season starts. Pre-season is ultimately about getting minutes into legs and building fitness, and nobody wants to miss the opening weeks because of an injury in a friendly.

But surely Freiburg were thinking exactly the same thing? Their players have a season ahead of them too, yet they still managed to play with intensity, purpose and, most importantly, like they actually wanted to win the game.

That was the worrying part for me. Palace lacked flair and creativity, and there seemed to be vulnerabilities all over the pitch. We looked far too easy to play against at times. Freiburg, on the other hand, looked organised, committed and much more assured. They didn’t seem to have the same obvious weaknesses that Palace showed.

You can make allowances for pre-season, fitness levels and players protecting themselves, but there still needs to be some intent. You want to see patterns of play, creativity, organisation and signs that the team is ready to compete when the real football starts.

Hopefully it was just a bad pre-season performance, but there was enough on show to be concerned about. The lack of flair in particular was evident, and there are vulnerabilities across the pitch that need addressing quickly.

Isn't this what friendlies are for, to practice new tactics? I doubt playing in 36c heat helped.
Absolutely , but it’s always a worry when one week before the first competitive match the tactics of a new manager , by his own admission ,are not working. The heat didn’t seem to get at the opposition, so it can’t be an excuse.
It is preseason , but it looks like our playing pattern with a new manager, will have to be Glasners , if we are to hold our own in the early games. For how long I wonder?

How many Freiburg players were at the WC? They may well have been playing for a place in the starting XI where most of ours were still getting minutes in their legs from a late return or return form injury. We've had great pre-seasons and bad starts to the real thing and vice versa.

We've changed the defence to trying to make the three wider and push the wing back into midfield more quickly. We're too slow on transition as we lack pace. We're then spread too thin - hence the easy chances.
We haven't addressed our extreme lack of pace. We haven't addressed our shambolic set piece defending - which is on Glasner as much as anyone else. The pace issue is on our recruitment. I'd guess at Mitchell and Sarr being our only quick players. Maybe Guessand if fully fit. I won't mention Esse and Rak-Sakyi as they won't be playing so don't really matter right now.
Maybe Gozo and Khalaili will address that somewhat.

Indeed, good pre seasons have been irrelevant, so have bad. Proof is in the pudding as it were. However, we look hugely disjointed. And it's hard to see us having time to gel.

5 at the world cup and only 2 started yesterday.
Like I said it's about minutes but the performances are concerning as is the words of the manager. Unlike the opposition we didn't have players exactly wanted to challenge for a start come Saturday.

I’m sure many of our players are constantly on other clubs radars & always will be - nature of the game is players want to earn big bucks with top 6

Palace is as Parish put it a stepping stone & will always be that unless Elon devices to buy into us.

Then like Chelsea , Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Ure , City , Villa we can trade for top established players

Them teams get disappointed in they don’t win the league , we get disappointed if / when we struggle to survive it.

So we will allows have our top players being poached

I'm confused. Why was extra time played in a friendly? There are also conflicting reports on the final score: some saying 2-0, others 3-0.

What the hell's going on?

Apologies if this has already been addressed. I just couldn't be arsed to read through all of it.
