Notting Hill Carnival - needs funding

Location
in a hidey-hole
Country
Wales
It seems every year there's a thread discussing the aftermath of many stabbing events at the Carnival. Or robberies, or other street crimes.
This year, the Carnival is short of monies, so is asking for Government assistance.

Carnival chair Ian Comfort has written to Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy to request the funding, which he said was "essential to safeguarding the future and public safety of this iconic event".

The Met Police's Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist previously raised concerns of a "mass casualty event" due to crowd density.

I think there's always a simmering tension with gangs at the Carnival. I think a Labour Government will buckle and come up with funding. Or will they ?
Personally, I think the nightmare of a mass casualty event is what it's going to take to close this crime festival down. The cost of policing alone is horrendous.

Couldn't they tax the muggers and drug dealers to fund it?

You beat me to it.

The Carnival receives funding from Arts council, Mayor Khan, the local council(s) and possibly lottery money. But it is never enough for the organisers. The Carnival has a long history of fraud committed by the organisers so it seems every few years they change and we are told it will not happen again.

I fully expect Rachel to go sofa diving and come up with a few quid.

It's time for the government and Khan to tell the organisers enough is enough. Carnival needs to be held in one place that is off the streets and can be safely policed for crowd surges and street crime. they can also charge the punters, Khan is happy to do this with the New Year's Eve fireworks.

I am holding a barbecue for family and friends soon, I will send Rachel the bill, why shouldn't the taxpayer pay for my enjoyment.

I used to go with friends every year but stopped when the crowds became too much to deal with.

Used to go when i was young and innocent. These days you couldnt pay this grumpy old git enough money to stand buffeted in a clammy jostling crowd all day. The heat, the litter, the toilets, the transport bottlenecks, the pitbulls, the drill-rap, the prices, the drugged-up nutters with all their neck-veins bulging, the overweight older women twerking their bum against Sadiq's smiling policemen for the evening tv news...... its a nightmare even without the stabbings & pickpockets.

I would prefer the Chelsea Garden show, or better still to sit in my own garden and listen to my Dolly Parton albums with a cold glass of lemon-shandy and a hankerchief on my head.

In my humble opinion, the Carnival began as a modest affair with just a few streets. It is now rapidly evolving into the Rio Carnival. And if you have any romantic allusions about , think again.

Same here PV - you had to be careful about getting caught in the crowd which was quite frightening for kids. The music changed over the years too and I didn't care for the change.

Policing is extremely difficult and a huge amount of cash. People's safety should be paramount. But this is a hugely politically-charged event. No-one is going to do the decent thing and pull the plug, because of the outcry over racism that would inevitably follow.
It's going to take the big-event disaster the police are predicting for this to be shut down.

I'd rather go to the dentist for a root-canal filling.

regarding the OP, the Carnival should be 'money generating' rather than 'money absorbing'. Tons of people, all spending money, etc. I would struggle to imagine other mass population events that do not pay their way......the Premier League, Concerts at Wembley, Glastonbury, even Brighton Pier.

Why is the Carnival unproductive for revenues ? and why so needy of our tax monies ?

my father worked at carnival on several occasions as Ambulanceman.
this would have been when it was a lot smaller , 80s.
Absolutely hated it.
For some reason the less friendly punters treated ambulance & firebrigade with same vitriol as they did the police.
A proper 'short straw' job.

Fast forward to now, Im sure the locals will be delighted not to have boozed up revellers pissing & craping around / on their property.
bollocks to it.

It needs to be banned immediately. It's just an excuse for criminality.

If it wasn't a Caribbean festival, it would have been shut down years ago.

Wild guess, because so does the Notting Hill stab fest

If it is to continue needs to be in a conatined area such as a park and ticketed
The New Year's Eve fireworks were originally free however due to overcrowding and policing issues Khan decided to change it to a controlled area which was ticketed. But apparently the same solution is not applicable for a far large and more difficult to police to event.

And yes I agree this topic comes up every year because the authorities do nothing about it. There is a foreseeable tragedy waiting to happen.

Yes, could easily go from a couple of mrders, numerous stabbings and injured police to something more serious.

1993 we had a New Year's Eve crush in Hong Kong, 21 dead , 62 injured, could easily see same if NHC crowd panicked

i am surprised a big tragedy has not already happened. Its madness the casual attitude to managing this Event every year. Is Sadiq is playing russian-roulette with peoples lives ? in my humble opinion, maybe. Will we see a crush akin to the ones below. Or a gang war, or a terror attack ? who knows.....but the Carnival has become a behemoth.
