Whilst every signing is a risk and a certain number will always fail, we cannot sign players at their ages for that much money and not get the most out of them. That suggests we go for a coach who picks his system based on the players we have, not one who has a system we need to sign players for. Both Palace and Glasner got lucky that what we had fitted his methods (once Munoz arrived). Surely, question number one at the interview is 'How will you get the best out of what we have already?' not 'Who do you need us to sign?'.

In terms of the status of the manager we pursue, Parish has shown plenty of ambition before. Its easy to forget that he pushed the boat out to get De Boer (which was all very exciting at the time) specifically to play more positive football, and to have a high-calibre coach. He was prepared to pay big money for Nuno. He pays big money for Glasner, including getting him in earlier than planned. He obviously does not see Palace as limited to unfashionable old-school dinosaurs, he just reverts to them when needed. He has also never appointed from within before. All of this suggests that while we won't get anyone with serious top-level pedigree, we will perhaps be looking for someone who could get to that level.

Personality-wise, I see no reason why Parish should want to find a yes-man. A good coach will doubtless come with a bit of ego. Parish has handled most of our managers well, including Glasner recently, and will probably be willing to take some rough with the smooth if it allows him to squeeze the very most out of the appointment. At the same time, we cannot have a big baby throwing toys out of his pram from day one. Club unity is a big part of our success. The new man must respect that, and keep his concerns in-house.

That is possible. Look at the Bournemouth coach. He builds a really good side, does well, then sees the club sell his whole back four in one go. He must have been gutted, but he just got on with it. He gets the team going again, and the club sells his best attacker in January. Again, he just gets on with it. No public bleating. Emery at Villa has started to moan a bit recently but mostly he has just got on with it, even when he got Villa into the Champions League only to find they still had to sell players and not really strengthen. I'm sure he was fuming. I'm sure both managers are asking themselves if its time to move onwards and upwards, but they channel that into doing a great job. That's what we need.

Fans may choose to totally ignore reality, to blind themselves to any and all understanding of FFP, PSR, finance, the nature of football economics etc, and instead insist on 'ambition' and the next level etc. I find it hard to respect, but I suppose they have the right, its only football after all. The club, however, must live in the real world.

Palace will never be able to provide, and certainly not keep, a squad good enough to play in Europe regularly. We will probably be a short-term 'project' for someone, a shop window, a chance to do well enough to be on the big boys radars before moving on and up. That's what we are to players, and it allows us to get very good ones sometimes.

I imagine we will approach the managers position in the same way. They don't need to run the club, just pick the team and coach it. In that way, it doesn't matter so much if they only stay for two years or so.

A good summary. Any new coach has to understand the realty. We’re not a top six club and never will be. We need to give young talent a platform them sell at a profit. I’m not sure Glasner really understood that although to be fair his concern after the summer was that we failed to spend the money we got for Eze, and his recent tantrum was not because we sold Marc, but that we did so 24 hours before a big match. Both valid concerns for him as a coach even if there were valid reasons for those decisions. He was entitled to bristle but not in public.

I was actually judging it by previous videos where Glazner and some of his other coaches are omnipresent. This time though, it seemed more focused on Paddy, but yeah, you're probably right in that there's nothing in it.
 
Andoni Iraola is the only Manager that excites me as I like the way Bournemouth play and the type of players they sign , Doubt we could prise him away from Bournemouth easily though .

He's out of contract in the summer. However I agree we won't get him. He'll undoubtedly get better offers and even then if he doesn't he'll take one look at how Palace conduct their business and decide he's better off staying put.

Maybe we could sign him up in advance of the summer and either stick it out with Glasner or appoint Paddy as an interim manager ..
Would have be subject to Palace staying up , I imagine ..
 
The latest odds have Southgate at the top. What do folk think of this?

I know many people like him (all the usual ‘ex player rubbish’) but in my opinion this would be a dreadful appointment that will only lead to the slow painful and dull death of our premier league membership, a fall in gate receipts (because people aren’t going to turn up to watch a team relegated playing boring football) and serve to articulate our lack of ambition. The new stand probably won’t be built (as Parish will say we can’t afford it) and we’ll be back where we were 20 years ago. To me, a managerial appointment is that important and I think we sometimes don’t consider the wider impact a good or poor manager can have. It feels to me as though Parish took his eye of the ball with OG and perhaps should have backed him more in the summer. (And we don’t know the conversations). I think we have to learn from this and not appoint the most boring football manager in the universe.
 
I think Southgate will go to Man U. He's got a kind of corporate image which would appeal to Radcliffe, although he might acknowledge certain shortcomings. Holland is already there and some deal to keep Carrick too may be what happens.
At Palace. I'm torn. I tend to agree with all the negativity but to be honest I wasn't thrilled when Hodgson arrived and overall it wasn't too bad. Younger players seem to like Southgate, so that may be a positive, if we are ever to reap any reward from our academy. It might not be a straight drop to the Championship, but on balance I'd prefer the Bournemouth guy or Frank.
You never know SP might even yet persuade Glasner to stay, although personally I think we're passed that point.

Maybe we already have, someone is picking the signings, and it certainly isn't Glasner any more.

Mate of mine on Perth messaged to say that there seems to be a lot of talk about Ange and Palace over there.
I hope not
 
Keep an eye on Newcastle. If results go badly this month and they get knocked out of three competitions the Arabs may tire of Eddie Howe. Maybe worth a try if he becomes available and Tottenham don’t get him first.
 
The thing is Glasner gets 4m a year, i suspect Iraola is not on anywhere like that, hopefully, Carrick stays at MU, and the same with the current managers of Spuds and the Geordies
