Newcastle vs. Crystal Palace match thread

Reality check - some say we are playing well under OG and certainly the style is more attractive than under Roy or PV, nevertheless we remain 12th which is roundabout our average no matter who plays or who is manager. I recall Parish's interview where he seemed happy enough. Even Pardew took us to a final...

I’ve found a shining light… despite how bad we play in a game, the absolute worst that can happen is dropped 3 points. I’ll take this all day every day for win against Villa and a win in the final.

Another thing I’ve realised… I know f*** all. That would have been my pick as the starting team against Villa. The subs all looked better. Whoever said give the others a run out… why not and give the regulars a kick up the arse. Esse, I like the look of. Positive, quick and looking to attack.

Oliver Glasner has received plaudits and I accept the football has been more progressive and far more 'Easy on the eye', however in the final analysis our final league position will hardly be an improvement on what was achieved under Mr Hodgson.

Back-to-back defeats, conceding 5 goals in each game, total and utter disgrace. 😡 😡 😡 😡

Sometimes you just gotta give credit where it's due, right? Newcastle were fantastic tonight...I'd argue the best team we've faced all season. Rampant. Clearly playing for Howe.

A big part of our problem is being mentally weak. When things happen like Eze's goal getting disallowed at Man City....or missing a penalty tonight...it has more of an impact than it should. Perhaps we have missing onfield leadership.
I thought exactly that tonight. We haven't really got a Jedinak/Damo/Macca who get stuck in and lead by example

I’ve been brought back down to earth again. I really thought we had a team to push on and pull us up the league with hope of better things to come. Perhaps finally some silver ware for this old fella to enjoy after watching us since 68. Oh well, back to reality and not looking forward to upcoming games again. Good old Palace :-(

The one saving grace about Eze’s penalty is that he won’t be let anywhere near one at Wembley. Imagine if he had got lucky tonight and it had somehow bobbled in. He would be our nominated penalty taker against Martinez. It doesn’t bear thinking about. Mateta is also rubbish from the spot and although his record is good, if you watch them he’s been very very lucky. No height, and always near the keeper.

Maybe Lerma or Sarr?

Glasner said it was a 'game to put in the bin' , 'a game to forget.'

What is clear is that we weren't at the required level, and didn't to the basics for the majority of the game.

Not sure why this was the case, but Pardew ( on pundit duty) was of the firm view that the players had their minds on the semi finals and were not competing at the proper levels.
That’s the difference between top sides and us. When you have a squad of top players they know they have to be on their game every game or get dropped. How many times do you hear players say “we’re just thinking about the next game” when asked about future big games.
I’m afraid we already know the starting eleven for the semi and so do they. Ollie needs to drop one or two for the next game.

I reckon we need an alternative lineup against the better teams and maybe go 4-3-3 attacking and 4-5-1 defensively. Just about everyone has picked up on the fact that our midfield has been overrun by the quality midfields of the top 4 or 5 teams, yet we persist with playing 2 there.

I would like to see Lerma and Hughes playing either side of Wharton and play Guehi and Lacroix as a CH pair. This set up requires both Eze and Sarr to defend so they would need to understand that.

Whilst we might not win a load of games like this we might keep a few of the better teams quiet whilst still retaining a threat on the break.

If I have a complaint about Glasner it’s that his tactics are a little one dimensional against better teams. Not sure what others think on this.

This 'performance' had echoes of Hodgson to me.
A radical change at half-time was in order but he kept the same team for the re-start.
Reluctance to give the youngsters (Esse, Franca, Devenny) a fair run out to show their talents - after 4 nil he had nothing to lose and they at least might have matched Newcastle's hustle and bustle.

OK, we only 'lost' one-nil in the second half but conceding five goals in consecutive matches is terrible.
I agree with another poster, the rot set in at Southampton, we were poor in beating Brighton and our decline now emphasised against City on Saturday and the Toon tonight.

I hope the manager tries something new on Saturday because it's obvious the 'old way' isn't working.
Any hopes of success against Arsenal or Villa next week are now sheer dreams

Absolutely fuming.

I don’t see this as clutching at straws but it is a consideration - is our total and shambolic form best placed a few games before a cup tie at Wembley, if we assume it will provoke a reaction/solution?

The alternative is to assume OG has no answers and we’ve gone from being one of the form sides in the league to a shambles of a team quite suddenly.

F**king embarrassing in the moment but I retain some faith/hope, even if I’m furious right now.

Defo need to refresh the team for Bournemouth, go with:

Henderson

Munoz
Richards
Lacroix
Guéhi
Chilwell

Wharton
Hughes

Esse
Devenny

Nketiah

We were poor tonight and I can't help thinking If we are holding back for the fa cup

We are 'Birds on the same twig' on this matter.
Two back-to-back defeats conceding 5 goals in each game is totally unacceptable.
The cresta runs of all football descents. Shame on them.
😡 😡 😡

Fortunately I was only able to watch the first half but, I have to say, I'm fuming about that penalty.
.
His many times do we have to see these stupid arrogant penalties get saved before players learn that either blasting it or placing it is better than doing something like that?

Such high risk with such little reward. I'd never be annoyed with a player for blasting it over the bar or a decent penalty getting saved. I think penalties like that or panenkas, for example, are genuinely selfish. Even when they go in I still think it's a stupid risk.

We deserved nothing but a battering from what I saw but if he scores that, maybe momentum shifts.
