Newcastle vs. Crystal Palace match thread

We’ve got a good defence against the teams around and below us. But against the top 6 we get found out. 4 points from 27 so far against them. And a shedload of goals conceded. Feels to me this happens every season and it ain’t improving. We’re not good against top teams.

Have to be honest we have been shite since the Southampton game. We somehow got a draw there and then the Brighton game they were just as shite.

Two good teams in man city and Newcastle punished us like Southampton and Brighton should have.

Actually I think it's all going to OG's plan. All we need now is a 0-3 on Saturday and get thumped big time by the @rse midweek. Villa will be so overconfident they'll field their youth team, who we'll manage a 0-0 at FT.

Probably lose on penalties though.

Anyway cheer up at least we haven't been relegated.

Haven’t had a chance to watch tonights game yet but these last two results are starting to confirm my suspicions.

Whilst we’ve displayed some really tactically sound game management under Glasner’s 3 at the back + wingbacks system for the last few months, there are a few weaknesses in our regular XI that will hold us back.

Namely:
- Mitchell cannot pass nor contribute going forward but is defensively capable.
- Hughes is brilliant at passing and contributing to ball retention (perfect for when the game is going our way). However, if under the cosh he is painfully slow & not an able ball winner or defender (Hence the enormous yellow card tally)
- Wharton’s defensive contributions are also subpar despite his playmaking being very good.
- Kamada’s performance against Man City leads me to believe he is better suited as an attacking midfielder (back up for eze/sarr) as there is no way he can play centre mid when he’s constantly peeling off players he should be marking, getting dribbled past on a couple occasions, plus the silly challenge.

Would be interested to know how well Lerma performed tonight (not expecting much, unfortunately). I do feel he is our most well rounded midfielder atm and ultimately the balance of our two central midfielder players is perhaps the biggest issue to address in an otherwise promising squad.

Glasner said it was a 'game to put in the bin' , 'a game to forget.'

What is clear is that we weren't at the required level, and didn't to the basics for the majority of the game.

Not sure why this was the case, but Pardew ( on pundit duty) was of the firm view that the players had their minds on the semi finals and were not competing at the proper levels.

Sometimes you just gotta give credit where it's due, right? Newcastle were fantastic tonight...I'd argue the best team we've faced all season. Rampant. Clearly playing for Howe.

A big part of our problem is being mentally weak. When things happen like Eze's goal getting disallowed at Man City....or missing a penalty tonight...it has more of an impact than it should. Perhaps we have missing onfield leadership.
