Mitchell

In the absence of definitive information on Mitchell’s contractual status this thread can only be pure speculation.

He would not be in a position to sign a pre-contract with another club if , as some assert, he has 2 years remaining on his Palace contract.

I doubt the club would have allowed a situation to develop where Mitchell can go for free, but I have no concrete evidence to support this.

More broadly I’m against players holding clubs to ransom.
I’ve just heard about Salah continuing his stance on being ‘far apart’ in negotiations with Liverpool.
He’s probably the best current player in the Premier League, but I hope Liverpool don’t bend so the tail is wagging the dog.

For those whippersnappers under 50 out there, there used to be managers around like Clough , Ferguson and Shankly who would point to the exit when players tried to control the strategy of their football clubs.

I do get this view but then again if somebody offered you much better wages to do your job wouldn’t you take it? I know I would especially if I was the best performer at my job, critical to my employer’s success and they were refusing to pay me more despite this. Doubly so if my career was only 15 years long. Triply so if the person I was negotiating with was a billionaire

I'm not criticising Salah and understand the motivation.
I just think clubs should call the shots.
It's Liverpool FC, not Salah FC.

I do not believe that he has two more years on his contract, Spotrac, capology and Transfermkt all say he is out of contract at the end of the season, and the first two sites are supplied by agents, but his agency Connect Force is a very small agency, so i hope he has two years still, but i am doubting it.

If he does leave, it will please a lot of fans, who dont realise how good he is. We will then be searching for another LB, who will cost £15m plus and may not fit into the team.
Another scapegoat will be found in the team to blame for everything by fans, who are wondering why Mitchell left as his replacement is useless.

As I've said many times, he'd be a great left back in a back four. He's not a great left wing back in a back five. Though his attacking output has improved this season.

I don't believe that all the clubs being linked with him are actually after him. For me that's his agent drumming up interest.

For me him and Van Aanholt existed in the wrong eras for us. PVA would suit this system perfectly whereas Mitchell would have been ideal for how we set up back then.

Had a little look myself at this mornings articles.
I see the ones linking him to north London are from websites such as "Football Whispers" and "Sports Mole" so I would take them with a massive grain.
And the links to Spain are just YouTube "skills" compilations made by unemployed people.
Make of that what you will.

As for the stats mentioned on the previous page, they can always be a touch misleading. I remember Wan Bissaka having the best stats not just in the league but in Europe when he played for us, but he is by no means the best right back in Europe.

We do need to keep Mitchell but he is a bit of a "weak link" in the team for whatever reason.

I am one of the critics of Mitchell’s performances / ability over the last few seasons.
Having said that, some posters have outlined some of his positive aspects and they are very valid points.

He is very fit and (touch wood) has been an ever present, seemingly not struggling with injuries.

His work rate and commitment is never in question and his attitude to training and on the pitch seems first class.

He also seems to be Palace through and through and seems very settled and happy at the club and on the pitch. He appears to conduct himself very well and you don’t see dodgy social media posts from him nor stuff in the general sports pages.

He is on ‘reasonable’ money by comparison to our other players.

He isn’t a regular yellow card collector like some defensive players and thus does not tend to miss games through suspension. It also means he’s not often on a yellow during matches and can play his natural game. He doesn’t get caught up with nonsense during the game or wound up with personal battles or retaliation. This again is only going to help the team overall during matches.

I get the sense he’s just a very level headed and personable young man. These types of players are just very good to have at the club and in the dressing room because it just adds a sense of normality and calm and helps to keep some of the louder and more flamboyant ones in check. I get the impression he is well liked and a positive influence at the club.

It’s a bold and forthright statement and I’m inclined to believe him.
As I said earlier, my own record of contract termination dates has Mitchell leaving in 2027. I just can't remember my source for updating it. It may well have been an earlier Woosnam statement. If one thinks about it, the club are unlikely to have allowed the contract of their only LB/LWB to have reached the point where he can sign a pre-contract with another club and not have a replacement already in situ. Even Palace aren't that stupid.

I think we're his level. Maybe he could get in a 'big' team but if he does then it'd be a Man United type situation - a player who doesn't really do justice to the history of the shirt. There's a lot of our team who'd get in the current Man United side who I wouldn't say are Man United worthy players.

The fact that England will pick literally anyone other than him at LB over the last year (Trippier, Saka, Colwill, Lewis...) is all the evidence anyone needs of how he's viewed in the football community. He's fine - he isn't anywhere near Barcelona, Arsenal, Real Madrid.

If he were to go I'd be interested in trying to beat Celtic to Kieran Tierney and then looking for more of a gamble-type player from abroad or lower leagues.
Man utd are flirting with playing in the Championship . I wouldn't wish any of our crop of players going there.

Matt Woosnam of The Athletic claims that the media are wrong and Mitchell's contract was extended and doesn't expire until 2027

It's being reported on a Spurs linked site that a Journo, called Wenham, states that Mitchell signed a 3 year contract at some point last year but it was never announced.

Hope it's true!
