What is it with our board? We are so close to top level success, yet we won't spend. Why?

Perhaps we don't want to fall foul of Uefa's stringent financial rules now that we're in Europe. Both Chelsea and Villa have received multimillion euro fines for doing so and face even bigger ones if they don't get their house in order.

Here are some of those rules:

• Squad Cost Rule: Clubs must limit spending on player wages, transfers, and agent fees to a set percentage of their total revenue, currently set at 70%.
• Breakeven Requirement: Clubs must balance their income and expenses over a monitoring period, usually three years.
• Acceptable Losses: Clubs can incur losses up to a certain limit, often around €30 million over three years, provided owners cover these losses directly
