Mateta

I think the whole thing stinks . If he wants away he should put in a transfer request . Saying I want to leave but I'm not asking to ? Wtf is that all about apart from cashing in 'loyalty' bonus's and such like .Talk about a disruptive influence and he can't even claim to be doing it on the pitch while we await the inevitable sulk when he doesn't get his move .
£35 Million is some fee for someone most of us would have given away 18 months ago if Forest are actually offering that and not just trying to disrupt our prep for weekend ?

But he is soiled goods now ,I just want to see him gone

Torn on this as he’s obviously our focal point and it just looks wrong timing for morale with Guehi and Glasner, even if it’s the right thing to do.

That said, if you can find a way to put Sarr, Johnson or Uche in those exact same positions from the lowlight reel, I’d have more faith they’d be scored. That could be the main reason we are in a relegation fight because had Mateta scored 50% of them we’d have just enough points now not to look over our shoulder.

It’s a gamble though as it’s yet another leaver without a replacement. If Uche, Johnson or Sarr can’t play in the middle and get those chances or if they get injured, we have literally zero cover. To compliment our no cover to Guehi or Munoz.

It’s worrying times.
Agree, the lack of cover in our squad for core positions is quite frankly a disgrace. Don't forget we do have Eddie Nketiah, although he has shown us that he is not really a No9 and his injury record is poor.

The concern is that we get the 19 year old lad in from France who is clearly not a like for like replacement (see Canvot for Guehi as a comparison) or panic and over pay for say Larsen from Wolves.

Mateta seems a likeable character, and I suspect he played a key role in the positive group dynamics of the cup-winning team. At his best he holds the ball up well, brings others into the game and, of course, gets a decent number of goals.

When I say a decent number, its worth remembering that he got 16 league goals in 23/24, 14 goals last season, and has 8 so far this season. For context, the only people to get those kind of numbers since we got promoted are Zaha with 14 (21/22) and Benteke with 15 (16/17). Otherwise, you have to go all the way back to Andy Johnson (21 goals 04/05) and then back to the early 90s with Wright, Bright, and Armstrong to find a Palace forward with 15 or more top flight league goals. Accepting of course that we haven't always been in the top flight, that still shows how hard a regular goalscorer is to come by.

At the same time, I find it hard to get past the old saying that form is temporary, class is permanent. For me, Olise, Eze, and Guehi were all class, but Mateta has just been in great form. He has done really well when supported by the best creative attacking talents Palace could ever hope to have, and far less well otherwise, including a couple of years of really stinking the place out before coming good. He is turning 29 at the end of this season. Even if he had three or four years left on his contract there would be a decent case for selling him now, at his peak value.

In telling the club he won't be signing a new deal he has done the decent thing by Palace, who can now make plans. The question is what should those plans be? I cannot believe Palace would sell to Forest under any circumstances, but certainly not when they are near us in the table. I would rather take a bit less money from someone else.

The timing of the sale doesn't matter hugely (now or summer) IF reinforcements are secured in advance. This is not like Geuhi, where we had to sell now even without someone lined up. If we sell Mateta now and do not spend the money in a way that obviously improves the team, that could not only make the team weaker, but also undermine morale.

Right now, I don't think a direct replacement for Mateta is necessarily what we need. I don't see the attraction of the boy at Wolves, for instance. We are struggling to create anything. We need a clever, jinky dribbler with an eye for an assist, or more creativity in centre midfield. Even if we get a good striker in, as things stand they will find chances hard to come by.

Plus, either now or in the summer we need to reshuffle the pack a bit. We have spent a lot on Nketiah and Johnson, not to mention Pino, and cannot write them off. I would be happy for Nketiah to have a run at No9. Johnson plainly cannot play as a No10. He might do a better job up front, or wide right in a different system. Both players have decent pedigree. I doubt the next manager will play the same system as Glasner now that so many of the key parts have moved on. Without taking anything for granted this season, the Mateta sale/spending money issue must be assessed with at least one eye on the future, and that future must include getting value out of the existing investments.
Right now we don’t know what sort of striker is needed as we do not know what style the new manager wants to play. No point really buying another one at present. Either start with Mateta and if he has become disruptive then bench him, sell in the summer and start with Pino, Sarr and Johnson as front 3 until Nketiah is fit, utilising Uche as replacement when required.

8 Months ago in a interview when asked about his dreams was , Champions lge and play in Italy .

Champions lge obvious reason , Italy think he whats to live there or like all kids dreams thats what he enjoyed watching most , we all had them , and with his knee maybe he feels its better to go now if right offer comes in , than risk it becoming worst and stopping his dreams dead , also new agent pushing him to move , you know the ones I can get you everything you want if you listen to me and trust me mmmm

The World Cup dream is gone I fear and he has one last payday before he’s done. A year or two in Milan and a villa on the coast is possibly more attractive than 2 more years in Croydon. The fact he’s even considering Nottingham smacks of desperation though.

I think the only thing on Mateta's mind is increasing his salary, while he can, and a signing on fee.
Yes, and that's what I posted on this subject last week.

At his age and while his stock is this high it's a good time for him to get those things.

It looks like we've seen the best of what he offers so if we get the right fee and a replacement then fine.

My only concern is how that fee is used and on whom.

Whatever the reasons for his mental and physical state, the fact remains that he has seriously failed converting good chances into goals. For that reason alone he should be dropped or perhaps changing his role.
As striker he just doesn't cut it.
With Nketiah being unavailable JP is virtually undroppable. As for changing his role - to what exactly ?

There has been talk around managing a knee issue that he has. I think another factor is that he's having to put in a 90 minute shift every week whereas last season he was regularly subbed and rarely completed a whole game.

Thing with Eddie is he's NOT a winger where Glasner always seems to play him. A bit like when AJ was picked for England and played on the wing...ain't gonna score even with his magic hat. As a regular starter at 9 Eddie will score. Same with Uche, not a striker or winger but a CM

Think thats mary knackers being a dick we should call his bluff , thats almost Dowie territory Mateta would be stepping into , I think thats more agent than player talking

If he goes and we bought another CF, there is no guarantee the Glasner will play him, I still think Sterling will end up at Palace until the end of the season.

Dream to move to Turin and reality Nottingham....

Perhaps Mateta just needs to stay put until summer transfer window. He has hardly thrilled in terms of recent performances coupled with below par goal scoring record this season. A chance for him to push back with the latter and make himself far more appealing to willing buyers from better clubs guaranteeing himself Champions League participation. If he finds Notts Forest offer appealing then he either has very low aspirations or there is a deeper problem occurring behind-the-scenes at Palace. Or an overzealous agent.

Other factor is that we are now dealing with breadcrumbs given this stage of the January transfer window in terms of a replacement.

If the Club is going to have a clear out then wait until the end of the season.
