Mateta

  1. We bought 2 CBs as potential replacements for Guehi (Riad and Canvot)
  2. In the ideal world Riad wouldn't have been injured for the past year and would have shown us what he could do by now.
  3. in the ideal world Guehi would have been willing to sign a year's extension so we could have longer to see how the 2 youngsters would fare and get some money back for him, but he didn't.
  4. We buy players like Guehi with a view to selling them for a profit when they've matured.
  5. We can't afford to let such players go for nothing.
  6. Despite Guehi's presence over the last 10 games, we've still been in freefall.
  7. His departure is unlikely to be the difference between staying in the Prem and relegation.
In other words, I don't see selling Guehi for £20m plus add-ons and a sell-on clause as being at all stupid.

Nor do I - I agree with much of what you say. My point is more around timing and I think doing so before we got a replacement in was stupid.

Probably, he's getting on and has had an operation. We need a younger replacement. Again, we should have given Imray minutes but didn't.
I’ve been saying for a long time despite good performances at Bromley Imray won’t make it with us at this level, but I’d like to see him given a go now, our circumstances have most definitely changed

What would you say he lacks?
He's far more attacking than defensive. He is fast but not massively strong. He's willing, but not Munoz. He probably can attack around Munoz's level, but not get back and defend and tackle as well as Munoz. He's also going to need more experience - which only being played can help. He's probably a good fit for Glasner. We also have to remember that we'll be lucky to get anyone as good as Munoz.

In typical Palace fashion we assemble a good squad (starting 11) we finally win a cup and then all the players grow massive egos, believe all the hype, and think they are too good for us. The press are constantly selling the players and every day it’s either Wharton, Munoz, JP or Max. Or any of the others that have already left.
I understand that they can move on and probably earn more money, but we see it time and time again that it very rarely works out well.
This current player problem is being exacerbated by the uncertainty around the manager and then the loss of Eze and Marc. The players are probably thinking that it’s all down hill from here and want out like rats off the sinking ship.
We need players who are prepared to fight for Palace, but at the same time the club need to make a stand to stem the exodus, or we will be playing Devenney in every bloody position.

Mateta is contracted to 2027. We either cash in now or tell him he's staying.

Where are we going to get another quality striker in this window?

He stays for my money. With the World Cup coming up, he will want to be in the reckoning, although he has fat chance the way he is playing right now.

So he's a bit of a Light-ray?

If we give him a debut it might Sting us, but probably Sting-ray as well.

It's been a slow night.

To be fair, as much as I wouldn’t be disappointed to see the back of Mateta now.

I totally understand why he wants out. This paragraph is screenshot from the BBC article!

Once again, Mr PRish is causing this mass exodus.

Time to go Steve👍🏼

He did it the season prior, and he's had plenty of good chances this season. The other players aren't paid to play centre forward. The point being is he thinks his worth a huge pay rise. His output suggests not.
and the players around him wasnt scoring , Sarr Eze mmm , makes a big big difference , take harlands help away he is at best 10 goal a season and they have 50m pound players around him , he is not a CF hes a striker its a team thing , and has played lone ranger , and from what I have watched he got some on target some off badly and some just missing , fine margins , Big picture Little picture

I recall we gave Mitchell a chance, he took it and became one of the most reliable on the team, not a world beater but still, holding his own across the Prem. I saw (on Palace TV) Danny play his first game as a trialist and thought he could become a decent player for us. He is strong, quick and with an eye for goal - I would give him a shot - surely better than the other two we have filling in for Munoz!
