Manuel Akanji

I don't see why we need to be rigid with signing youngsters. What we need is depth and quality and if the rumours are true, Akanji offers both.

At 30, we'd get at least 3 good seasons out of him and £15m is a low transfer fee. Depending on salary, could be an excellent signing for us. Yes from me.
Agree. Especially in goal keeping and centre half positions where easier to play for longer at top level

People need to remember this guy is 30 so no resale value and would show we are not learning from past mistakes.

Expect this is why City want him gone they need fresh blood.

Not saying this player is bad but really we should not be going for players that are 30+ unless it's a loan or free.

I genuinely expect a loan at most. I doubt that frankly, unless he can be somehow coerced.

We need a blend of young and old.

Assuming MG leaves, our other 2 CBs are 25.

If we could sell MG for c.30/40m, buy Akanji for c.10/15m, it still leaves some change to buy another young CB.

30 isn’t old these days. He could easily play for 4 seasons more at a very good level. £15m not unreasonable and he is a very good player with lots of top class experience. Exactly the sort of player I think we’d need if Guehi left. If Guehi stays it would give us another athletic, good passing centre half.

Personally I would be very pleased with this if it happens and very surprised if it did. Would expect wages to be a significant stumbling block

It’d show that the club is. The club has had a habit for multiple seasons of picking up 5, 6 + undeveloped players, of which maybe two break through into the squad, usually not instantly.

Whilst I wouldn’t put an end to those signings (they’ve given us our best players and got us to this point), you do need to balance them out with fully developed and experienced personnel.

Also, I’d go out on a limb and say we haven’t really signed a player of Akanji’s profile since Edgar Davids, if at all, in terms of playing at the higher level.

So for many reasons it’s not a typical signing. If it turns out to be a mistake, it’d be a new one. I myself think it would be a great signing and show that we really do mean business since winning the Cup…
