We should start a 'demolition pool' on when the first building is knocked down.
I'm going with Wednesday, Jan 14th.

Breaking news, work has started at last....On the groundsman shed where he keeps his mower. Parish has said they expect to renovate it by the end of next season. 😀Letting the tyres down will do.

What's funny and predictable is that when this stand gets started and is eventually completed, the naysayers on various sites will virtually ignore those momentous days and start complaining about something else.
I wonder if Parish ever reads this stuff?
Come on Steve. Sort out the Whitehorse. 😀😆😀

I might be dead by then.I thought the whole reason for doing the main stand first was so they could move the boxes and then redevelop the whitehorse end. Hopefully that's still the case. That will definitely give us another 20 years of moaning

Yeah, like moaning about our players. What's funny and predictable is that when this stand gets started and is eventually completed, the naysayers on various sites will virtually ignore those momentous days and start complaining about something else.

I think the Whitehorse needs to be done for aesthetic reasons. We need to fill our capacity of 34k before we contemplate a significant increase beyond that.
When and if it happens, it would only add another 2 to 4k I'd imagine, unless Sainsbury's becomes part of the stand, or we build over it somehow. The Arthur is also crying out for a second tier and better facilities. That could add another 5k.
Unless we become a Champion's League level club, I can't really see us needing more than 40k for a regular game.
It's probably going to be one stand or the other for the foreseeable future.
England
It just takes the right palms to be greased. We had 40k in the '70s.We would easily fill up 34k take a look at how many people are waiting to get season tickets.
The main issue is not would we fill it if it was built which we would but the cost and return (The current cost for this one stand we wont see a return on that thing for over 25 years)
Modern clubs need to expand audience as well not just fans you need to bring in tourists etc this is seen by all the clubs which have larger capacity.
Not sure we could get it up to 40k anyway it was enough trouble due to the way the streets and transport is to allow the increase by not even 10k

With the Arthur Waite, keeping the stand open would be likely impossible during a rebuilding process, as there is no space behind it.I think perhaps the cost per seat added of the new main stand is bound to be higher than with other stands, as the main stand includes other club facilities like offices, fancy main entrance, an attempt to make the outside of the ground look impressive with all the glazing and curved wall and all that stuff.
Personally I have no problem with a bit of architectural ambition - its the main stand for the ground, the only one with an open area outside it, and its quite important for the status and reputation of the club that the place looks good from the outside.
The other stands are totally different. They don't have, or need, offices, flash reception areas, posh external features etc. It might be that if we were talking about a new Arthur for instance, it would pay for itself in less that the 25 years you mention.
A new AW or WH would still be very expensive of course, and fraught with difficulty, but they may be a different proposition in terms of cost and return.
England
I am not sure in today's world how the AW could be rebuilt without it being done from the pitch, thereby keeping traffic flow and not interfering with the houses behind, Likely therefore to be done after end of season; demolish done one year, build done the following year in the summer months, with a reduced capacity as a result in between. With the Arthur Waite, keeping the stand open would be likely impossible during a rebuilding process, as there is no space behind it.
I would imagine that a new roof could be put in place in the closed season, or the stand could be temporarily closed for a few games on top of that if necessary. That could accommodate a second tier added at a later date I suppose. If access was a problem, then I guess that would have to be done first. The biggest problem, as far as I can see, is that the angle of terracing is currently quite shallow. It needs a sharper angle to create more space behind.
I don't know which method would be employed to support the hideous existing roof to replace the annoying posts, but I expect that is all they will do for now, along with removing the gantry. The whole world will be looking at that stand with the new camera placements, so it needs something.
