Jørgen Strand Larsen

Unbelievable. £50 million ? Parish must be joking.
Next we will hear is that Mateta is going to Forest of all teams
Palace never cease to amaze!
Maybe he hasn't understood that next year's budget isn't dependent on kicking this year's money around until he loses it.
Still, let's get behind him - he might be a scoring sensation and seem cheap at the price.

Looks like this is really happening. Wow. That is big money for us.

I will get behind this as we all should. At least we are showing intent.

If The Strand bangs in half the clear cut chances we make, and lets face it we have no trouble making the chances but as a genius other poster said we cannot ‘hit a baboon's arse with shovel’ it will be money well spent. Let’s give the kid a chance (that said for £50 big ones he bloody well better).

I am still perplexed at Brendas transfer to be honest more than The Strand.

Its a like for like isn't it ? Get 35 for Mateta 45 for this lad means this lad has cost us 10 . Not bad seeing as we will be replacing a player that doesn't want to be here with one that does

I think thats not a bad deal ,we know how limited JPM is ,just think when Larsen through on goal shoots straight at the keeper , what fun we will be able to have on here 🙂

Agree. Even if he's like for like with Mateta's ability then it's £10m for someone who's 3 years younger, a contract that's probably 3.5 years longer, and has 2 working knees. £10m is a more than fair premium for that.

Yes it'd be great to buy a big striker who fits the system and is Prem proven for a lot less money than that, but there aren't many around hence JPM's price tag being similar.

Their records aren't dissimilar. Both good last year, JSL in a worse team. This season Mateta is 8 goals (3 were penalties) and 17 big chances missed. Strand Larsen is 1 goal with 3 big chances missed.

I saw JSL in a couple of WW games some time ago and thought he looked a decent player. 50mil seems a massive amount of money however. Time will tell if this a catalyst to turning around our current woes, or will add to them. As someone else says, if JPM wants off and we get 40mil for him, a 10mil delta for a younger, fitter, player is good business. I just can 't help but think of other expensive flops - Benteke, Sakho, Franca, Edouard, Sorloth,... and can add Nketiah (jury still out), and Pino (ditto). Our recent transfer dealings haven't been the greatest. Lets hope he bucks the trend and proves to be a shrewd acquisition.

I was about to ask whether he’s been fluffing his lines or a case of just not been given the service this season .

Agreed.

We will all have differing views on both this and the Johnson signings but at last we are seeing the club trying to show intent.

One can only hope Larsen will show his best form for us and not as his fellow Norwegian Sorloth, who didn't for us but subsequently did for Athletico Madrid

Probably worth pointing out that we haven’t sold Mateta yet and we could be in a position where we actually end up with very little for him.

The deal to sell Mateta should be agreed before we commit to any purchase. It would be financially stupid to do otherwise.

I don't think the critique is necessarily of spending big (although I personally think it's a mistake for the club to go away from ours main transfer policy) - the critical responses are surely aimed at huge fees being spent on mediocre players who crucially we have a very small chance of ever making a profit on (mainly because no one else is going to be stupid enough to pay such ridiculous fees as us).

Then the funds will have been used up, the squad won't have any more depth and a new manager in the summer will not have any funds to use on players they want.
But we have sell on value in the squad - therefore if the new manager wants to buy a few players, he will have to ship a few players out. Glasner had to do that but shipped out players like Schlupp, Ayew, Ward (unfortunately) and improved those players within the squad.

With the additions to the squad that we are being linked with in the media, I think it gives us that squad depth where we don't need to rely on filling the bench with youth prospects.

We bought like a mid-table club, take punts on championship players and if one comes good then we redeem our money. The idea being that at some point if we want to kick on then we will need to invest in players that are ready to play immediately. JSL is desperately needed to lift the current stress and workload on Mateta. He looks like he's running on empty, playing like a man who needs a break but we cannot afford to give him one. Now we can and hopefully it results in 2 strikers who both are reliable and can score goals in our system. The fee for purchasing such a player is neither here nor there as far as fans are concerned.

Oh come on now - whether you agree with the signing or not it’s a cert that Steve Parish knows his way around these financials.

Selling someone without having replacement and he gets it in the neck and now he’s trying to be pro active to ensure he gets the player and still people moan

It’s also eminently possible a deal is in place to sell Mateta but only if we can buy a replacement.

Yeah, but as I said in another post on here, Mateta is carrying a knee injury. Unless the medical team at the buying club at this precise moment are mad, incompetent, foolish or is in Division 10 of the Outer Mongolian league, why would they touch him with a barge pole?
