Jørgen Strand Larsen

Yes, I'm concerned that Johnson and Larsen have enjoyed 'purple patches', when they've scored well, but they haven't shown good form recently. It's not unusual for players to show great form, but can't maintain or ever repeat it. Mateta perhaps the same too. Not offering much when he first arrived and I hold my hands up that I wouldn't have been bothered if he'd been moved on then. Of course, a fantastic period followed, goals, entertainment, fun, but he's been poor for some time now, perhaps with some excuse that he's carrying an injury. I said elsewhere that bar a couple of games, I thought the team was playing quite well, but it's bloody obvious the side is not scoring enough in spite of creating chances and it's getting embarrassing and worrying. Whatever occurs, I just hope for strikers or anyone who 'can hit a barn door from 10 yards'!

Once they become a danger I think teams work out how to play them but the difference between now and then for both and Mateta is epic.

I will support every player who puts on the shirt but I can't get excited about this one.

There must be any other striker with a decent goal return available for less than £50m.

Even if we sold Mateta I'd rather we gave Uche a go up top than take this massive gamble
I am yet to be convinced that Uche would be a positive influence if deployed as a centre-forward.
Privately last week, I brought Alexander Sorloth into the conversation !

I wish we could bring him into the team.

Any club that buys Mateta at this precise moment needs their heads tested, and also needs to get a competent medical team. He is carrying a knee injury. I think I know who would buy him while he's injured...........................

I take a pragmatic view on this and don’t see Larsen joining unless Mateta is going.
If Mateta is going , and on the assumption that Glasner is staying for the rest of the season, we are going to need a centre forward to implement the system.
When I say a centre forward I don’t mean Nketiah or Uche.
I mean a focal point for the attack who can link the play , compete with opposition central defenders, get on the end of chances and help with both defensive and attacking set pieces.

I was quite impressed by what I saw of Larsen at Wolves last season.
He’s 6 foot four and unlike Mateta can actually head the ball.
He’s more mobile than Mateta and looks to be a decent finisher.
I could see him helping to bring the best out of Sarr and Johnson.
He’s got caught up in the terrible season that Wolves are encountering but that doesn’t mean he’s suddenly become a bad player.

There are still a lot of games to play this season, and much to play for, and I wouldn’t want to face these games with Mateta gone and no replacement.
A fair assessment. He probably is over priced (time will tell) but reflects the market

I know these values should be taken with a pinch of salt but...

Stand Larsen is at no.25 on the list of the most valuable centre forwards, JP just below (same value) at no.26.

Just out of interest, who should we be looking at on that list, based on those valuations at least? Delap? David?

Well, I read a bit somewhere that Leeds fans reacted with glee to the report that Palace had bid 50 million quid for him. And that if Palace get him, Leeds would have dodged a bullet. I tend to agree with the Leeds fans.
This season he has scored 6 goals and 2 assists in the on pitch equivalent of 17 matches (all competitions). Last season he scored 14/5 in 31 matches equivalent and in La Liga 13/3 in 32 matches. There is a goal scorer hidden in there who also can create opportunities similar to Gyokeres up the Arsenal. Given our big “mistake” with Sorloth I wouldn’t write him off.

Well, we are buying strikers from the PL clubs who don't want them for record prices and putting them on salaries higher than long-serving players Nketiah has never scored more than 5 league goals in a season; Johnson was on the bench and is a one-trick pony yet to show us his trick; and Larsen after a breakout season, on loan, already earns about 100,000 a wekk and is not coming here for a drop in pay. A reminder that he has the grand total of one goal and one assist this campaign. He turns 26 in a week's time so this is probably as good as he will get and will have little sell-on value when he has a year to run on his contract even if he is reasonably good He also has no physical presence so we can say goodbye to watching a big CF holding up the ball and bringing Munoz into play
If all Matt Hobbs can come up with is someone he has previously purchased, we are really in the s***. We would have done much better getting Hwang for a song in the summer
We are turning into West Ham without the benefit of 62,000 attendances

Should we be surprised? We've always done this. Benteke, Akinbiye, Adebayor.

I'll be surprised if Uche is here next season. He has not impressed me at this level.

Larsen did well for Wolves last season. I'm nowhere near convinced but maybe he can recover some of that form.
I would keep Mateta till the summer. His agent is obviously a plank.

No I know, I just cant believe it.

If true its annoying that if we have 50m to spend we're spending it on him.
I agree. There was a time when we were after Hayden Hackney. Now he's a player we could do with right now. Would add goals and energy from midfield, something we're often missing.

JSL could work out, but given we are always told there is no money it would just seem bizarre to splash £85 million on two players who were struggling to get game time in struggling squads.

I’m not doing cartwheels over this signing, but JP wants out and apparently someone is going to pay £40 million!

Honestly, take the money it means we pay £10 million for a younger, premier league experienced player - who scored 14 goals last season.

When JP arrived I didn’t ever see him eventually becoming the player he was for us last season - maybe Larson will surprise us all.

He’s certainly not a “donkey” (nor is Mateta btw) Eddie Howe was prepared to shell out £60 odd million quid for Larson when Issac left Newcastle and Howe is someone who very much knows a player.

If any player wants out, the club has to act swiftly and bring in a replacement - before any negativity towards the club spreads.

Now if we could sign a MG replacement (something we should have done before we sold him) we’ll be okay. If we want to improve - a goal scoring midfielder is a MUST. Jordan James (currently on loan Leicester) will be an excellent addition, once he recovers from his hamstring injury.

Up the Palace!

Indeed, as would striker Kasper Hogh of Bodo/Glimt in my humble opinion.
