Johnson, McNeil

But who rates Allison. How many of our managers have taken us down twice - and in consecutive seasons
Not so much rate him as look back on his time fondly despite the outcome. Along with some disastrous results he brought excitement and kept us in the spotlight all the time. I've always thought if he could have coached both sides in a match it would have been a fantastic game but unfortunately the opposition didn't bother with his methods and usually tore us apart. It might have been smoke and mirrors but the old rogue was a star.

He is remembered fondly despite taking us down as you say.
I can't think of any manager who has achieved that level of fondness frim.the fans on the back of such a terrible record.
It's easy to see why with the level of excitement and glamour he brought to the club.
He spoke of us as if we were Real Madrid, even in the old third division.
He promised to take us out of the old second division and he was true to his word - sadly to the third division.
When his tactics worked we played some very good and innovative football, particularly on the run to the FA Cup semi final.
The oldies amongst you may recall him walking around the ground in his fedora taunting the opposing fans.
His autibiography is worth a read.

There is a big difference between when you pay and how you show your purchase in your accounts. The reason Chelsea got players like Caicedo etc. on 8 or 9 year deals was so that for accounting purposes they could spread the cost over the length of the contract, so, say £11m a year for 9 years. I'm not claiming to know the rules regarding how much has to be paid up front or over what period, but the accounting side is, I believe, as I've indicated. We will have done the same as Chelsea when we bought JSL, Johnson and previous players.
That I know, I was however replying to 99 who stated English transfers are 50% up front & the rest within 12 months.

‘Colours of My Life’. A very good read. A passage in it says he could never believe how the local suburbs would empty with people flocking to the ground.

Perhaps I am the oldest git to contribute to this thread (so far) but Bill Glazier was in goal when I first started going. My memory is that when Glazier left Jacko and a Welsh keeper called Millington alternated for a while before Jacko made the shirt his own.

Tony Millington. Jacko's next understudy was Frank Parsons then (guessing) Paul Hammond.

As I recall, the one time Allison was unpopular with the fans was when he preferred Hammond to Jackson who was a club legend.
Hammond was never really good enough.
Jackson ended up going to Orient

I remember a match at Orient where we won 1:0 and our fans applauding and singing to Jacko when he was down our end and him loving our appreciation of him. Greatest Keeper I’ve seen at Palace but I was a young man then and had my heroes unlike today 🙂

my first palace keeper when I was a kid was Paul Hammond and at the time I couldn’t understand why older fans used to slag him off because I loved them all at that age even though we were 3rd division, but I soon began to realise it was because he didn’t stand a chance having to follow in the footsteps of John Jackson

Roy Bailey was in goal when I first started, his son Gary played for Man Utd in goal. Then Ray Potter took over, followed by Bill Glazier. Jacko was my favourite though. The roller coaster keeps on rollin’.
