Johnson, McNeil

It would be almost inconceivable that the 35m for Johnson was paid in one payment, probably like any deal with a structured payment, i would be surprised if we had even paid half, if Everton pick up the remaining payments on his deal, then it is like a 10/15m add on.

Ultimately, unless someone blabs, we'll never know.

What we do know, is that the club have acted decisively, and got in a left footer.

We know that Johnson was struggling to settle, and Sage has had a couple of weeks to form an opinion too.

We also know that Steve Parish doesn't throw money around for fun, so he's unlikely to have been shafted here. There will be details that make this attractive for both sides.

With contract length McNeil is probably worth 15m. Which as Lanzo said may be simular to what we paid up front for BJ. So may be a 'swap' with Everton picking up remaining payments.

Either way, McNeil is a very different type of profile to what we have. I think he'll fit in great.

Agreed. A genuine left footer who’s specialty is crosses and set pieces gives a great option and alternative to the inverted wingers who tend to cut inside. I don’t think he will set the world alight however I’m pretty sure he will be far more valuable to us than Johnson.

we do sort of know some of it. With English transfers the fee must be paid in full within 1 year and 50% is due upfront (unless this has been relaxed in recent years, if so the change has passed me by).

So 99% of English deals are 50% upfront and 50% in 12 months.

The way around this is to have add ons, which can be used to extend the length of payment, but clearly the selling club want most of these pretty much guaranteed.

If i was a betting man i'd say Johnson's fee was £30m (£15m upfront and £15m in 12 months) plus £5m in add ons as it was reported as a £35m deal.

It appears Everton has taken over the £15m still due and most, if not all, of the add ons have probably been avoided.

Wish Johnson well. Didn't work out, but he has a fresh start. And we have an expense flop off the payroll. Good deal all round. I'm not familiar with McNeil, lets see some good crosses for JPM and MSL to knock in.

This swap makes sense in my view. Johnson just didn't click for us unfortunately and the longer it went on the worse it felt for him. Hope he is more successful at the Toffees.

So McNeil comes here finally after we upset his girlfriend in January by pulling out of a deal to buy him at the last minute. She tore into Mr P and accused him of causing undue mental stress at the time, but he has since been the ultimate charmer and all is now rosy.

On the strength of this loan arrangement I reckon we should try more and suggest we start by asking Bayern if they'd care to swap Olise for Lerma. Seems reasonable doncha fink.

Great result for us. I sincerely hope Johnson finds some premier form someday moving forward. Just not against us. I fancy Mc Neill to do very well with us and definitely way better than Brenan

Re your second paragraph, I recall Ron Atkinson saying that women should be seen in the kitchen the bedroom and the discotheque and nowhere near a football pitch. Perhaps add or a football transfer.

You honestly think Chelsea or example, pay 50% up front & the rest within 1 year, no chance. Why do you think they signed players on long contracts, to spread he costs. Hardly any transfer fees have a large % 'upfront', this is why a lot of negotiations take so long, selling club want as much as possible upfront, buying club want to pay a smaller amount, as well as all the other stuff that incls 'add-on' etc.

There is a big difference between when you pay and how you show your purchase in your accounts. The reason Chelsea got players like Caicedo etc. on 8 or 9 year deals was so that for accounting purposes they could spread the cost over the length of the contract, so, say £11m a year for 9 years. I'm not claiming to know the rules regarding how much has to be paid up front or over what period, but the accounting side is, I believe, as I've indicated. We will have done the same as Chelsea when we bought JSL, Johnson and previous players.

John Jackson was a legend for all fans in my youth.
Off topic for this thread but I'll still respond here. My greatest memory of Jacko was the game where we clinched promotion to the top tier for the first time in 1969, a 3-2 win against Fulham after being 2-0 down after 20 minutes. At the end of the game the players all lined up in the main stand and Jacko stripped to his underpants and threw the rest of his kit down to the fans on the pitch.

Described by many as "the best English goalkeeper never to play for England " (although he did play for the Football League side once.

You can blame Gordon Banks and Ron Springett for that.

Was in goal for Orient when my namesake scored the winner there in 1979 to set up the Burnley game. Big smile on his face picking the ball out of the net looking at the Palace fans going mental behind him. A great day!

You might be right. I thought English transfer payment terms were more strict than for European ones, but it is very possibly this was relaxed by the Premier League.

You can definitely only amortise the transfer (spread the cost) over 5 years now, regardless of the contract length. This was to stop what Chelsea were doing.

Premier League clubs vote for five-year limit on paying transfer fees regardless of length of players' contracts

I’m an old git, but Jacko was JUST before my time, so I always swing towards nige
George Wood was the first goalkeeper I remember seeing play for Palace. He was a loyal custodian and had good games, but I agree with you Nigel Martyn was easily the best I had seen at the time. Many years on he still is.

Maybe a controversial view but I have said this on other threads: had injury not curtailed his career prematurely I think the seldom referenced Matt Clarke would have become one of our best. He was immense during his short stint with us.

I do recall seeing Jacko play for Leyton Orient on reruns of "The Big Match Revisited" as recently as the last year. This was the closest I ever got.
