If he was on s*** money or unloved at West Ham, or we were a title-challenging, champions league club, or if there was a World Cup or Euros coming up next summer, then maybe. But none of those things are true.

Anyway, if we had £50m to spend then surely we'd spend it on three players for £15-18m each, none of whom are proven, and two of whom turn out not be be remotely good enough. Isn't that the big idea? It's really very, very clever.

From west hams pov. His best days are behind him and a 50 million bid comes in for a 30 year old. Im pretty sure they would push him out the door?

You might well be right. Although, perhaps they'll think he's still their best player by a mile, and the only reliable goal scorer they've got having thrown so much money at so many poor forwards that Matt Hobbs can only gaze on admiringly, and weigh up the pros and cons of promotion?

I mean, getting back up must be worth a lot more to them than anything they could get for Bowen?
 
He played in all 38 PL games for WH last season notching 9 goals and 11 assists. If you take money out of the equation then this is a no-brainer. He instantly makes us a better team, barely ever gets injured and has had consistent numbers in the PL for years.

We would be spending a lot with no real chance of a return on investment in terms of resale, but what he could give us over the next few years (he's 29 btw, not 30) in terms of experience, goals and leadership may be worth spending a big fee.

Having said all of that, there is no way he's coming to us. West Ham have already raised a lot in sales, with other players likely to leave before their talisman.
 
I'd love him here and he'd be a great replacement for Sarr. However, we can't be paying anything like that money for someone his age and, for West Ham, it's clearly not worth selling him for less given how important he'll be for their promotion push.
 
Several years back we had the opportunity to buy Bowen from Hull but declined.

I'd rather we bought him in January instead of Johnson and Strand Larsen - he was, and still is, a better player than either of them and if Sarr and/or Mateta leave it won't be a bad move to get him at this late stage.

If we get 60m for Sarr 28 and Mateta 29, we would have money in the bank, and Bowen 29

He declined us , he is a West ham fan so is his family season ticket holders , we never had a chance
 
Waste of money, I was gutted when we missed out on him and would have had him every season since. If it was Bowen we signed for £35m in January we would have been in dreamland. £50m now is a desperate move. If this is true can we not give it to Dougie as a new contract and let him work his magic.
Failing that pay me £1m per year and I will find unheard of players like Johnson, steam Larsen and Bowen at over inflated prices

That's a much more likely scenario. Looking back at that season, it looks like we had Ayew playing right wing and he managed one goal in all competitions that season so Bowen would have been a huge upgrade. Of course, we would likely not have been looking at Olise six months later so I'd take that

This touches on the main worry I have with the current squad.

When we signed the likes of Eze, Olise, Wharton, Guehi, Richards, Henderson, and to be fair some who did not work out for us like Sorloth, we had a hardened bunch of leaders within the first eleven like Ward, Tomkins, McArthur, and a few others like Chieck Doucoure. The conditions were favourable for young players to come in and shine with that core leadership around them.

We do not have that now. I am not sure - if we were to identify and attract the next Eze or the next Guehi - if they would have the same platform to shine.

For these reasons I look at signings like Xhaka at Sunderland, Jordan Henderson first at Brentford then at Chelsea and think we might be wise to look at doing something similar. Is Disasi that sort of character? I hope so.
 
I agree not at £50m. However one thing Bowen would give us on the pitch is an outfield player being a leader. Since Guehi and Lacroix left we have precious few big voices on the pitch.

And I don't count Mateta given his wish to leave.
