Ismaïla Sarr

The most interesting question right now is will Sarr give 100% and will he benefit from this system? I suspect the answer is 'yes' to both questions.

And while Sarr and his agent's tactics were abhorrent, he is one of our most vital players, particularly in a system which relies on swift progression. I have no problem with the money he gets in today's financial landscape.

I wouldn't mind betting he will be with us for at least another season. You don't up wages hugely on a player you intend selling in a few months. This isn't the Olise situation where we needed to pump up his release clause. We hold all the cards with Sarr and could reject offers for the next 3-4 windows without raising Sarr's wages ans still have a season to sell him. I suspect we are simply making Sarr happier to play and that he will knuckle down this season. We and the player will re-evaluate next summer and see if a £40M offer comes in, at which point we might have a successor lined up / bedded in and be willing to take that sort of fee.

Shame that a player who had become quite beloved here acted the way he did but that's the nature of the beast when it comes to modern football.

I must admit I'm not really sure on the rationale of offering him an improved contract.

He's on 75k and has the best part of 3 years left. That will take him to the summer after he's 31. He's kicked up an almighty stink and is clear he'd rather be off.

The argument that extending it would raise the fee we could get might be true if he was 23. But he's almost 29. Does a 29 year old with 2 years on a contract command far less than a 29 year old with 3 or 4 years on a contract? Wouldn't have thought so.

I guess the only way it makes sense is if it has a decent buy out. 40m?

Still dont like the thought of giving someone who's effectively been on strike a payrise

Because selling him and buying a ready made equivalent is far more expensive

I know he is coming back from injury and didnt get many minutes on Sunday, but he didnt look very arsed to be there . Did he even get a touch .

I don't want to defend my former fave player but he did chase back on sunday and help double up on hudson-odoi. He also went forward and was unlucky not to get on end of an over hit through ball on couple of occasions.

Probably difficult to be totally up to speed when not played for couple of months, whether it's cos of injury or sulking.

Its just my opinion but i think Kamada works better in our present systerm
He definitely adds something different. Given our upcoming run of fixtures though I think we’ll need Kamada to help with the CM rotation. Sarr hasn’t yet played in the system but I’d prefer him to come in (and Kamada switch to midfield) than Will Hughes come in or Lerma play in midfield. Good to have options though.

Maybe I’ll get pelters for this but all of our issues tend to occur when messing about with it at the back and we looked better when we cleared long, laid it off and allowed us to press even if we didn’t win the first ball.

Perhaps we may be better going 4,3,2,1 with a midfield of Kamada, Wharton and Timber, Pino and Sarr in front and JSL up top as he has been.

It’s just an idea based on what I saw was going wrong last game. Basically our CHs are not good enough to dribble it out of defence.

It's horses for courses though. If we're chasing a game, sure. But if we need to tighten up and see out a win, Lerma and Hughes are much better at that. Like you say, amazing to finally have great options that we can deploy exactly what we need, when we need it.
