An investigation into a rape outside a church in Epsom has been closed after police concluded "no sexual offence had occurred".

Surrey Police said following its "thorough investigation" into the incident, which sparked protests and public disorder in the town, they now believe the woman concerned "sustained an accidental head injury" following a night out and made "a confused report".

A spokesperson added: "The woman involved has given us permission to share this information and she continues to be supported by the relevant services."

The force said it "takes every report of sexual offending seriously, each of which is treated with sensitivity".
The woman, who is in her 20s, initially reported that she had been raped outside Epsom Methodist Church in the early hours of 11 April, after leaving Labyrinth Epsom nightclub.

The incident prompted large groups of people to take to the streets demanding descriptions of the suspects.

However, police said they did not have "sufficient information" to give descriptions, and riot police were deployed.

Five people, aged between 15 and 23 from across Surrey and London, have now been arrested on suspicion of public order offences and criminal damage after "missiles" were thrown at officers.

Local hotels and residential properties were targeted over claims they were "housing people seeking asylum", which police called "wholly inaccurate information".

All five people arrested have been released on bail, a force spokesperson said.
The scenes were dubbed "shameful" and "mindless" by Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner Lisa Townsend.

She said some of those involved were not local and blamed misinformation linking the case to asylum seekers or immigrants.

On Thursday, Surrey Police said it had carried out an "extensive examination of CCTV footage, house to house enquiries, interviewing witnesses and forensic tests".

It added that it was "imperative that the appropriate time be allowed" in order for that to happen, while "support is given to the complainant to progress inquiries at their own pace".

"This limits what information we are able to release publicly."

A spokesperson said that the "lack of information in our initial appeal, particularly regarding potential persons of interest, was because the descriptions given were vague and limited".

"We recognise this caused concern amongst the community, but we are now confident that there was no offence and no suspects."

They added that local officers would maintain "a visible presence" in Epsom over the coming days.

Seems no sexual offence occured and the woman just hit her head....

Society is on a knife edge and when you see what happened on Brighton beach and the suspects who can blame people jumping to conclusions?
This doesn’t sound right - she hit her head and then said she was raped by 4 men, but must have been confused and got it wrong?
Was all this a set up?

Apparently she claimed seven must be Snow White another character well known for fiction. 😉

They had a genuine grievance there was no grievance at Epsom they jumped the gun after the local M ember of Parliament and the police told them NOT to speculate and await the police investigation. It is really easy to understand, they were just looking for trouble and the chance to damage Great Britain.
Really? A genuine grievance about a criminal killed in another country which cost the Metropolitan Police over £8 m as well as the other costs incurred and some 130 arrests.
No one looking for trouble there obviously.

Don’t be ridiculous! Of course you should condemn anyone who jumps to conclusions over anything.

It’s always better to make sure of your facts before doing anything. Unless in a life or death situation.

Unless the police decide to say any more we won’t know. As speculation has already been shown to produce nothing but harm I strongly suggest there is no more. There are a multitude of possibilities.

You conclude any one against immigration is a far right racist bigot.
You must have run out of windows in your glass house 🤦

We aren’t discussing people being “against immigration “, whatever that actually means. We are discussing people causing havoc and wasting police time because of unfounded rumours. Rumours spread by known agitators, known for their far right views.

Most of us want to see us, together with all the other countries impacted, find a workable solution to the scourge of illegal immigration. Not though just “against immigration”.

In other news today the Met chose not to investigate 2015 Epstein trafficking and sex abuse claims .

is anybody taking bets on forthcoming Rape statistics being equivalent to , say, 30 years ago ? can Keir, and all you lefties, now guarantee us a rape free society ? a place where it is safe for drunken young ladies to stagger home alone ? or kids to play in the Park in the sunshine ?

She was only 10.

People have a right to be concerned when this goes on.
I heard that they had already had asylum refused but were all appealing on legal aid and were being housed at our expense .
I wonder if their claims were based on them being gay?
