Immigration

Of course we don’t just do nothing! It’s what can best be done that yields actual results that’s questioned.

It’s easy, even lazy, to think that they can simply be returned to France but if you stop and think about the practicalities it’s not a valid option. It would produce bigger problems than we already have. Cooperation is much more effective than confrontation. In the long run.
So, if we cannot return illegal immigrants to France we use Trump tactics to encourage the French to prevent them from leaving their jurisdiction. The problem is on their soil and they are passing the problem to us.
I can’t remember the specific tactics Trump used with Mexico but I seem to remember him slapping a huge tariff on their export of avocados into the US to make them focus their minds.
Despite your dislike of anything on the right of the political spectrum, our best bet may be for a Le Pen government in France; they would likely be as fed up as we are with illegals entering their country and temporarily suspend free movement to control their own borders better.

Better still is as France are in the EU you simply load up a Cruise ship & drop them off at multiple European ports. Rotterdam, Antwerp, Le Havre & Hamburg. They came in from the EU let them deal with it

the day the French elect Le Pen ? that will be the day every Banlieu bursts into flames. Do you honestly think the large proportion who wave Palestine flags will ever accept her ? the democratic mandate of an election ?

and its probably something similar here with Farage. People who don't like Sadiq will grumble, moan and do nothing about it. Farage ? probably something far more incendiary ? those who burn poppies* will start looking very scary.

*apologies if that sounds racist, but burners of Poppies are not a race. They are just @rse.holes

To repeat, France isn’t Mexico. The USA dominates Mexico. We reply on the EU. Starting a tariff war with the EU would be almost as stupid as deciding to leave it.

A Le Pen government would be too busy arguing with its EU colleagues to worry about us. They would probably encourage as many as possible to cross here to rid themselves of the problem. The current cooperation, limited though it is, would stop.

Without pushing anyone, I tend to agree but for different reasons. A Le Penn government just means all the fakers move onto the next easy target.

Sounds so simple doesn’t it?

Until you actually stop and think about it. No cruise ship enters any harbour uninvited or unassisted. So you load them up, feed them, let them enjoy a relaxing day or two, get refused entry and have to return to the UK. Great result.

If only we had an agreement with a third country that would take undocumented migrants, thereby encouraging true asylum seekers to hold onto their documentation before arriving on our shores...if only we had such an agreement.

...except that if France has Le Pen and the UK has Farage, I think there would be considerably more cooperation than at present, both singing from the same hymn sheet, so to speak. At the moment it is easy for Macron to just tinker around the edges of the problem rather than solve it for us (hence my suggestion of using Trump tactics to focus the mind). Anyway, lets continue down the current route and see if we can continually beat the previous year's arrivals record...

...or continue down to the UK controlled portion of Antarctica...

A Marine Le Pen government just means all the fakers move onto the next easy target.

A Le Pen Government will never be allowed to happen. Not even if she got 75% of the votes. The mainstream media, the EU, the Pope, the banks, and especially the mob on the street.....will all rise up against her. An even stronger backlash than Trump received.

Democracy is only accepted when the votes go the way our Elites allow. Don't believe me ? ask the irish about the vote on the Lisbon Treaty.

To be fair it's likely to be her and the other guy now. Bardella. But I share your sentiments. The French election is hilarious anyway. As if anyone would choose Macron.

A relative made an interesting point yesterday…

Brexit has meant a load of the younger Europeans who did the low paid work are now not here. The result has been 3rd world migrants have come to replace them, plus their children and probably partners.

I can’t really deny this. He’s left wing but voted Brexit and regrets it. In or out didn’t make much difference to me. He argues the country is 4% worse off in GDP, at least. One reason I voted Brexit was the undercutting of wages from Eastern Europe, either just because, or because many Poles etc were living 10 in a house to be able to undercut Brits who have real level rent or mortgages to pay. European immigration wasn’t an issue to me, and definitely better than what we have now. He also said Farage promised less immigration following Brexit when there’s actually been more. That is partly poor government but also to replace Europeans leaving or no longer coming to England.

Except that Le Pen actually has the whole of the EU to deal with, which would keep her fully occupied. I have no doubt that we would see the results of photo opportunities and cosy press statements but genuinely effective action I don’t.

Real problems tend to get in the way of rhetoric and up to now all that exists from either Le Pen or Farage is rhetoric.

These problems will only be solved by international cooperation involving the whole of Europe with all nations bordering the Mediterranean.

Your relative is right and your acceptance of that represents a glimmer of hope to me!

It was, of course predictable, and predicted by some, during the liefest that happened in the run up to Brexit.

We are though where we are. Would the Eastern Europeans want to return here if we reentered? I am not so sure.
