How do fans know what a player is worth ?

Obviously money in the game is absolutely crazy im not defending that. I agree we definitely sold Lacroix too cheap, but I notice a lot of fans seem so sure on a players value, im just curious how you define their worth ?

The bowen thread is full of people who're adamant he's not worth 50 mill, why not ? We're quick enough to criticise the fees paid for both Johnson and Strand Larsen, 35 and 48 mill, how much do you think your average premier league player should be worth ?

30 years ago, Shearer went for a world record fee of 15 million, in today's money that's 240 mill. Yorke, juninho and Ravenelli all went for over 10 mill. A marquee signing 30 years ago was between 5-10 mill, which equates to 80-120 mill today. 3 million on a player wasn't unheard of, we sold Martyn to leeds that year for 2.25 mill.

do you understand the market and value of a player or do we just see 50 mill and say that's too much ?

1. There is the market value of a player e.g. Olise
2. There is a value that Palace will pay for a player which is not the same as 1.

Most people would agree that if Olise is sold it will be at the top end of the market because he is one of the best players in the world. It doesn't matter if it is 100m or 200m because Palace would never pay it.

50m for Bowen is ridiculous be at 30 he has no resale value . I notice that the big clubs who could afford that have not been queuing up which suggest that he might be worth 50m to West Ham as he is a key player for them but the market would put his price lower.

Which is fine if you're running the club strictly as a business. But you dont sign a player just to make profit, you sign a player to improve the team. Regardless of age he's still more than capable of improving most prem squads.
