How do fans know what a player is worth ?

Obviously money in the game is absolutely crazy im not defending that. I agree we definitely sold Lacroix too cheap, but I notice a lot of fans seem so sure on a players value, im just curious how you define their worth ?

The bowen thread is full of people who're adamant he's not worth 50 mill, why not ? We're quick enough to criticise the fees paid for both Johnson and Strand Larsen, 35 and 48 mill, how much do you think your average premier league player should be worth ?

30 years ago, Shearer went for a world record fee of 15 million, in today's money that's 240 mill. Yorke, juninho and Ravenelli all went for over 10 mill. A marquee signing 30 years ago was between 5-10 mill, which equates to 80-120 mill today. 3 million on a player wasn't unheard of, we sold Martyn to leeds that year for 2.25 mill.

2. There is a value that Palace will pay for a player which is not the same as 1.

Most people would agree that if Olise is sold it will be at the top end of the market because he is one of the best players in the world. It doesn't matter if it is 100m or 200m because Palace would never pay it.

Which is fine if you're running the club strictly as a business. But you dont sign a player just to make profit, you sign a player to improve the team. Regardless of age he's still more than capable of improving most prem squads.

TransferMarket is fairly accurate on players current worth. Munoz was £22m yesterday the fee he went for today and Bowen is at £30m.

Yes to a point.

Contract length, age, potential all play in to things. As well as how much the selling club wants to keep and buying clubs wants to buy.

Bowen is almost 30, say you get 3 more good years plus a 150k wage, thats 24 million a season gone.

Vs take Guehi, bought for roughly same as he was sold at, so effectively only cost us 2.6m a season.

vs Eze, bought for c.15m sold for c.60m with a average yearly of 3m. Made roughly 30m on him net.

They're incomparable, Guehi and Eze were both young prospects, Eze was bought from QPR and Guehi had just had a successful loan spell at Swansea in the championship.

None of the players are worth anywhere near what's paid for them. In order to pay back their transfer fees and wages you'd need to either sell 10s of thousands of shirts a week, win the Champions League (depending on player's bonuses) and the League as well. Then the club would still be unlikely to break even on the transfer - unless they sell at a large profit. The wages make it doubly unsustainable. For instance, hiw much will Isak cost Liverpool? How will they recoup that. Conversely they may have nearly broken even on Salah due to merchandise sales . We, of course, cannot compete with that. Players wages are a huge drain on every team. Add in ridiculous transfers and other fees and the clubs all make losses.

This is the key point. A latter day Ward or Delaney were worth far more to us than they would have brought in fees.

They are accurate on sale value in open market but not sale value to the EPL especially to the spoilt 6 and/or a team they know is in urgent need and up against the calendar.

Based upon Brighton's valuation of Minteh of, what was it? 80 mil? But then that lot alwys over-value and that west london outfit usually obliges and pays. Liverpool didn't, whicj i suppose is why Sarr is now in the frame
