Flanagan was also a jungle of scrubby curls
Our planned strike force of Flanagan and Allan didn't work out. Before he came to us Clive Allen was supposed to be part of Arsenal's SAS forward line with Frank Stapleton and Alan Sunderland. Then they replaced them with Tony Woodcock and Lee Chapman but the WC partnership didn't attract as many headlines.

Flanagan was terrible wasn't he ? I seem to recall he was quite highly rated when he came to us.
Flanagan came to us from a stellar season in the North American Soccer League. I think he'd been top scorer in that league and been awarded Most Valuable Player. It was more down to that than his previous time at Charlton. The problem was that the First Division was a higher standard than the NASL, so he struggled to make an impact here. And we did pay a heck of a lot of money for him. This is from memory, so I may be wrong now, but I think we paid £650,00. If so, at the time it was the third highest fee paid by a British club behind the £1m paid by Forest for Trevor Francis and the £900K paid by Man Utd for Ray Wilkins, which was absolutely ridiculous. I found it odd that Venables was so keen to take Flanagan to QPR because he'd none nothing of note at Palace.

Okay, I’ll stop there 😀
You missed out John Pemberton

Can't believe non-one's mentioned Ian Evans....
What a great, classy player whose career was sadly ended by a broken leg if I remember rightly.
Club captain & Wales captain too. Defo in my top 50!
Remember that. It was George Best who broke it for him. Yes, he was a good player. He seemed to be incredibly tall.

Great call. I was there when he scored a hat-trick, but I can't remember the opposition right now. Yes, his leg was broken in a challenge with George Best when we played Fulham in 1977. I suppose one of the 'what ifs' is whether Billy Gilbert would have established himself in the side if Evans' career hadn't been ended by that broken leg.

Kevin ‘Ticker’ Taylor I always thought was a decent underrated midfielder in that time when Sir Steve of Coppell was just starting to turn things round for us

Maybe not great, but worth a mention I thought
