A lot of Christian teaching is ‘woke’.

christianity is a very broad house. Its history had a hell of a lot of nutters......of all flavours. Sometimes diametrically opposed to each other.

You telling us Pope Urban , who started the Crusades, was woke ?

The Catholic church (as most religions) doesn't discriminate based on race, and doesn't really recognize countries, rather its people are all equal under its religion.

Of course then you get fanatics that take a part of religion and use it as justification to kill other members of the religion.

Personally I'm an atheist, and we either love everyone equally or hate them as equally. Although I'm kind of in the middle.

abortion, LGBTQ, bedroom politics generally, ............ the history of christianity has not much commonality with the wokes. Not Christian preachers or nor christian texts.

Dan, you can yearn for progress with the next pope, but if he goes too woke he will alienate the CC from at least half their followers.
Jesus loved and forgave Mary Magdalene, the ex prostitute. But he never encouraged her to go out and sin some more tomorrow.

I’m not religious either but think a lot of Christian teaching provides a decent moral compass to live by. Always find it ironic that it’s usually those who do claim to be devout Christians whose politics are diametrically opposed to Christian teaching. Not sure how they reconcile this with themselves.

Personally, I think the Golden Rule of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you“ is a pretty solid rule to live your life by.

ah yes. mustn't wear clothing that mixes the fabrics.....cotton, and wool, AND terylene.....oooh immoral ..Leviticus.

Personally, some of the most unpleasant people i have ever met in my life have been deeply religous....various religions.

Atheist here, and i see religion as a risky toxic thing. So called christians at each others throat in Ulster for 400 years. That, and all the other sectarian stuff. The Middle East is awash with religion. What a mess.

the crimes of the Catholic Church are well documented and well understood. All power corrupts. Its ironic that Jesus spent a ton of his time criticizing the established religious leaders of his World. Why would He be any different today ?
A ton of the history of the Catholic Church is stuff that's not even in the Bible......like Popes.

The European carve-up of Latin America........... one of the crimes of the millennium. Overseen by the Catholic Church.
 
Just watched "Conclave". Really good film until you get to the twist, which gives me mega eye rolls.

I won't put in a spoiler because up to that point it's a very decent film.

Agreed. But 'The Two Popes' is very entertaining. Anthony Hopkins never disappoints.

It is now looking highly likely that our new Pope will have a standoff with Trump/Vance. And all three claiming to have the Christian moral high-ground. Christ almighty.

FWIW, I dont see religion as a risky toxic thing, I see the people/institutions enforcing and pushing their religious beliefs on others as the toxicity.
Most religions have, at their heart, very good moral guidelines for life.
 
I loved the part in the Bible where Jesus stated - yes, please include all that completely contrasting stuff from the Old testament, please build massive churches and cathedrals, open a bank, make money, sell stuff and abuse people with impunity. He distinctly asked for a hierarchy, wages and management, headed by some old guy in Rome. Everyone to get wages and the trappings of office in splendid surroundings. Particularly as Rome had always been so friendly to Christians. The Vatican clearly has no links to Nazism or Mussolini - thank God.
So Christian isn't it?
I'd love a Pope to say "look lads, it's back to actual Christianity for us". But it could never happen. Imagine what a shock that would be.
 
Come on lets get serious, the old testament has 35, different contributors over 1200 years from 1660 to 400 BC, and the new testaments was devised by the Egyptian bishop, Athanasius I of Alexandria in 367 AD, who put in 4 of the 27 psalms he wanted, can anyone believe this is an accurate account of that period, for Gods sake.

Any religion that discourages its women to marry 'off the Ranch' while simultaneously permitting their men to do so ? That would be hypocrisy and playing political games for the greater Market-share of the Religion itself...not the good of the people.

Which seems to be very many of the big religions.

Successful Religions ARE often toxic and their number one rationale is to serve their own purposes, to spread conversion and to take over new territory. The nicer kinder religions will be like prey to the Lions - and often get eaten. As did the Druids, Latin-American Shamen, and the Zoroastrians.

Roman Polytheism was a lot nicer than the intolerance of Monotheism.

Religion...........possibly the NUMBER ONE reason for wars in history. To quote another thread on HOL, 'a Trivial Pretext for violence'. Picking up a weapon and battering a fella you don't even know - a fella you don't even want to rob, with little fear of him robbing you. Ulster, India/Pakistan, Israel/Palestine , the former Yugoslavia , the Spanish Armada, Crusaders & Jihadists.
