Guessand

Thing is, as with any misfiring player, who will buy him and for how much? I'm sure we could give him away for £5-10m but that's a big old loss. I'm far less sure anyone would give us £15m or more. That alone suggests he stays, even if we don't want him.

This is why recruitment decisions are so important, once we buy a player we are committed no matter what. It's like that advert, a dog is for life, not just for Christmas. We can't just take Pino to a beach and leave him there. That sort of thing is frowned upon. We accepted responsibility for him, now we have to see it through.

All of which leads back to Guessand. We already have Johnson, Pino, and Nketiah struggling to provide any value for money and having very little impact on the pitch. I like Larsen, and he has started reasonably well, but he's probably not £45m worth. I cannot imagine us getting what we paid, let alone turning a profit, on any of these players and in at least two, possibly three cases, they are looking like very expensive mistakes. We cannot make another one.

Sarr is the only forward we can rely on for match winning form and good value. Christ knows what will happen with Mateta. In these circumstances I just don't think we can take even a calculated gamble with Guessand. If he's played games for us, scored and made a few goals, and yet we're still not totally sure about him then perhaps the plug must be pulled, just because we have so little wriggle room.
Despite your fears, I will be surprised if we don't sign Guessand. We were after him last Summer but Villa trumped us. I imagine we will try and offload Mateta and Nketiah. We'll probably make some money on the former but lose it on the latter. It's then a question of whether or not we get an offer for Wharton that the club feel it can't refuse. If we do, that sale will provide much needed funds for strengthening midfield and defence. If not, and if we go with a manager who prefers say 4-2-3-1 (which I note the U21s played yesterday) then we may decide we won't need any more CBs and that Riad and Canvot will be adequate back-up for Lacroix and Richards.

Difficult to disagree with any of that. I might be a bit surprised if both Mateta and Nketiah were offloaded, though, even if we can find buyers. That would mean we'd only have Larsen as a recognised no9. Even if Sarr, Guessand, or maybe Johnson could play there, it would still be a bit risky.

Perhaps picking three from Larsen, Johnson, Sarr, Pino, and Guessand might be just about enough, though, especially if Johnson or Pino improve. If they don't then it places even more weight on the importance of Guessand doing well.

Maybe that's a clue that a replacement manager has already been selected and negotiated with who plays that way.

Just idle speculation.

I think we’re in a win- win situation with Guessand. If he achieves the appropriate number of goals and assists to trigger buying him then we will be doing well in the league and his value will have gone up. If the new manager doesn’t fancy him we’ll sell for a profit.

Unless he's the type to drop his performance levels once he gets the contract he wants! No reason to think he is, bit it has been known. I'm looking at you, Benteke.

Glasner mentioned that Guessand will be out for ‘3 or 4 weeks’ meaning he’s unlikely to have significant involvement for the rest of the season.

Stick or twist, on the assumption that he hasn’t already triggered a purchase obligation?

Twist for me as he hasn’t done enough to warrant a £20+ million fee.
There have been flashes of ability, but I’ve not been convinced by his overall contribution.
Given a choice I’d prefer a Dwight McNeil type who has a skill set the rest of the squad don’t possess.
A great crosser of the ball, excellent at set pieces and long range shots and experienced at Premier League level despite still being in his mid twenties.

Im the same what worrys me is he goes down far to easy , and yes runs with ball often into blind alleys , he is a big man yet goes down very easy and gets caught taking on one to many , think sometimes we are blinded by small achievements and don't see a full picture , I reckon the Mcneil boat has sailed , but we are trying to embed a lot of new players into rolls that better players were in , so its a big step for next season with a new manager

I am of the same mind.
As mentioned before, I witnessed Guessand at A.Villa 3 times and I was not impressed.I understand their supporters share my opinion.
I believe A.Villa paid £26 Mill rising to over £30 Mill for his services.

I think he's quite an odd type of player.

Despite an athletic build he lacks pace. He's strong and is capable of having ' moments ', but overall I think we could use £20m+ better elsewhere.

He reminds me of a cross between Bakary Sako and Jeff Schlupp, not sure that’s a good thing though🤣 as you say, capable of moments, but enough for what we’re going to have to pay?

But informed. I suspect Roy was to last out the season until he fell ill and OG arrived. But for that, the handover would likely have been the summer and that would have been the first anyone had heard of OG.

As this one could be. There is much speculation, but I suspect our new manager is in place, all but.

Yes the enigma that is Jeffery schlupp scored some important goals and quite often in back to back games , and also played right back when needed , he didn't fall down easy

Indeed, og did need a bit of convincing to take over earlier than he was due to (maybe a sign of how difficult he may be to deal with).

I too think we have a manager lined up. I don't know where this injury leaves guessand as he needed 8 goal assists to activate the clause for us to buy him and i think he only has 3 or 4.
maybe it allows us to get him a tad cheaper if the deal isn't met but villa want to sell and player wants to stay.
