Guessand

What I'd like to know is why it didn't work out for him at Villa.

Because so far, it doesn't seem to be an ability issue.....but they did play him without success.

And the price does seem to indicate that Villa know he has ability, though they seemed happy for him to leave.
Lots of their fans knew he was being played out of position and didn’t want him to go I read somewhere

Evann Guessand needs five more goal involvements to seal Crystal Palace move.

Palace have an obligation to buy forward from villa for £28m if he reaches eight goals/assists during loan spell.
Is that right? Seems an unusual arrangement. Is that confirmed somewhere?

Either way, I'm still not sure what to make of Guessand. I thought he was really good in the first half last night, especially in pressing the ball and winning it back, which is encouraging.

At the same time, he seems a bit erratic still. The bit that summed him up was when he had a chance to play Mitchell in down the left but delayed and took the ball in the opposite direction, only to find that it all opened up unexpectedly and he could advance to the edge of the box. First he had the chance to slip Larsen in, but hesitated, then he could have shot but again hesitated, and then had the easiest pass in the world to Sarr but delayed inexplicably and then played it too late, when Sarr was offside. Guessand never looked even remotely in control of his own thoughts.

I don't mind unpredictable players, but I'm not yet sure the quality is there.

He's a strange one I think.

Big and strong but he doesn't have a turn of pace.

While his passing has been erratic, he does look to pass the ball forward, but a bit like Pino, the timing of his passes can be a little off.

But I guess that's what £28m buys you these days....

Probably appropriate when your surname has the word guess in it.

I have similar reservations even while acknowledging that it’s early days .
There are flashes of quality but he sometimes looks static without movement off the ball or dynamism.
We don’t seem to have addressed the need for better quality delivery from wide areas or more direct power and pace down our left hand side.
Perhaps we haven’t been looking , but that to me would make us look better balanced as a team.
Johnson may have pace but he doesn’t have power and I have been surprised how frail he looks.
Pino may have the skill, but has neither the pace nor the power.
Guessand has strength but has a tendency to run back towards the ball rather than looking to make driving runs behind the defence.

that passage of play was beyond, odd. It wasn't even as though he was selfishly driving forward to get into shooting range.

Maybe too many options?!

It's not just me, then!

I think perhaps the next manager might play Sarr on the left. Perhaps that would allow Johnson, or even Pino, a go playing on the right and hopefully get a tune out of one of them.

Turning back to Guessand, before I knew about this performance related deal we have with villa I'd have picked him ahead of Johnson or Pino, but more because the latter two have been so bad. Now I'd think about benching Guessand for fear of him hitting his target and triggering the deal. Sounds crazy to be worried about a forward making or scoring goals, and I'm sure he would have his moments for us if he signed, but if we spend another £28m on him we will have too many forwards in the squad and less money for other areas of the pitch.

Plus, who is to say that he's the next managers cup of tea? We are already presenting the new man with decisions taken for him in the shape of Larsen, Johnson, Nketiah, Pino. Why box him in even more?

Not that Glasner will care. He will pick the team most likely to win right now with no thought or care for the longer term implications. Even if he thinks Guessand is not a player he would want to have next season, it won't matter to him.

Probably same as with Harvey Elliott. Their old DOF brought in players that didn’t fit in with Emery’s system or what he wanted. He’s now gone and they’ve got a new DOF in.

When we signed him the European football expert on Talksport said that Guessand was a class act in Ligue 1 and hopefully we’ll bring out the best in him again. I think he’ll be even better in a few matches time when he’s much more match fit.

Pino leaving would be good for us.
Thing is, as with any misfiring player, who will buy him and for how much? I'm sure we could give him away for £5-10m but that's a big old loss. I'm far less sure anyone would give us £15m or more. That alone suggests he stays, even if we don't want him.

This is why recruitment decisions are so important, once we buy a player we are committed no matter what. It's like that advert, a dog is for life, not just for Christmas. We can't just take Pino to a beach and leave him there. That sort of thing is frowned upon. We accepted responsibility for him, now we have to see it through.

All of which leads back to Guessand. We already have Johnson, Pino, and Nketiah struggling to provide any value for money and having very little impact on the pitch. I like Larsen, and he has started reasonably well, but he's probably not £45m worth. I cannot imagine us getting what we paid, let alone turning a profit, on any of these players and in at least two, possibly three cases, they are looking like very expensive mistakes. We cannot make another one.

Sarr is the only forward we can rely on for match winning form and good value. Christ knows what will happen with Mateta. In these circumstances I just don't think we can take even a calculated gamble with Guessand. If he's played games for us, scored and made a few goals, and yet we're still not totally sure about him then perhaps the plug must be pulled, just because we have so little wriggle room.
