Modern players are not allowed by their managers to take players on or shoot unless there is no pass option available. Statistically passes are more effective than take- ons.

A driven ball , straight as an arrow, hit with conviction.
Sadly this type of shot is all too rare these days, but used to be commonplace.
Don't see too many full volleyed goals either, which were also a joy to behold.

This is spot on. Football is a game of numbers now. Statistically long shots are not effective very often so players don’t take them as they are instructed not to. As you say dribbling has virtually disappeared from the game for the same reason. How often does a winger get the ball, turn and recycle play rather than taking on the full back?

It’s one reason modern football has become so sterile

Possession is king. Pep and his teams' endless side to side tippy tappy football has a lot to answer for - it might work with Messi or Haaland to benefit when a chance is finally created but for most teams it just comes across as fear based and tedious.
Maybe it'll go away like Charles Hughes' POMO long ball theory which was also pretty boring.
 
Peter Nicholas scoring from the edge of the box against Man U in 1980, one of my favourite goals. I was behind the goal in the Holmesdale and watched it all the way in.

I have also heard this referred to as an "Old-School" or "No-nonsense" Centre Half.
I recall several decades ago hearing a Southampton supporter referring to their uncompromising defender John McGrath stating that they feed him "Raw meat".

You have answered your own question .The % say dont shoot but work the ball into the penalty area
 
When taking a long shot Statistically you may get 1 from 10 that could become a goal , stats don't look at the possibility of a goal they just say on target , woodwork doesn't show other than off target , there are no Bobby Charlton or Peter lorimers anymore or even our very own Darren Armstrong , we always remember the ones that went in but not the ones that didn't ,
Shooting from 22 yards is the maximum you are looking at as possible scoring chance from a shot , other than that , near post back post is the more realistic chance of scoring
