Fulham vs. Crystal Palace League Cup match thread

Wat hung the game I start to think , Richards, Disasi and Lerma is our strongest back 3. Lerma worked hard again tonight, if a tough defensive player that cannot be bullied. We need the solid base. Richards was motm.
Osorio showed many glimpses of what he can offer, will be a big player for us.
We got away with that but a great win. Lovely to see Hendo back, plus Hughes and Doucoure.
Tough game at the weekend. Another smash and grab will lift a weight off everyone’s shoulders

We rode our luck in the first half but we set up better and worked hard. Once they’d punched themselves out we could have grabbed a second.

This way of playing has to be the template for the next few games.

Sage must be aware that having defensive mids available is crucial to the overall functioning of the team. Good to see Doucoure come through 60 minutes, and Hughes patrolling his area and knitting everything together.
The ball to the back stick caused problems in the day when Guehi was here, it's still something they need to work on.
We played with 10 men, Guessand is a waste of space, as I forecast when we brought him back in, lazy recruitment for a lazy player. Difficult to judge Nketiah, however the one thing he had to do he did very well.
Given that Timber is out Hughes must come in, with Doucoure making appearances from the bench.

It has been well documented on HOL that I have never been enamoured by his performances and A.Villa supporters are of the same mind.

Seem to be much more of a force in the red and blue kit. Nice and historical and all that but ditch the white and use as a 3rd kit
Yes indeed. I have a thing about the sash kit, recalling it from the team of the eighties, the same team whose players were sold off and inferior replacements brought in. The 80/81 season if I'm not mistaken?
Anyway, the new kit has bad vibes. Red and blue should always be the first kit.

I don't think so.

Fulham are consistently wasteful in front of goal. A better team would have been 3 up before we even strung a few passes together. Understandably, the starting eleven, somewhat cobbled together as they were, struggled for long periods of the first half.

Good to see Doucoure start and get some more minutes under his belt. If he can get back to his peak of a few years ago, he could be that piece of the midfield jigsaw that's been missing.

So we’re forest wasteful but we won this and that game. Chances for show, scoring for dough.

It was a well executed game plan. Obviously a gamble making so many changes and we were under the cosh but great finish from Eddie and then when we brought on the cavalry I thought we largely took control.

The League Cup is funny because you don't really acknowledge it's happening and the suddenly you're in the quarters. Sunderland is a tight tie but definitely winnable. If we get to the semis, who knows?

Recent results have been poor but there have been enough good moments for me to think that if Sage could just tighten us up in the league and we could nick a few results, it could still work with him. I want him to succeed but, sadly, the truth remains that if we lose to Spurs and Liverpool he probably still has to go.

Problem being Richard’s and Lerma are both strong on the right. Richard’s played central of the 3 last night and for the first time played well in that position. Going to be difficult picking a balanced middle 3? What helped as well was that Fulham were poor and we defended as a team better. Fulham still missed some easy chances which better prem sides would have taken. Yes, we looked okay last night but the Spurs and two matches after will see if we have learnt to defend better?

Must have been watching a different game to some.

1st half was probably the most disjointed half I've ever seen Palace play. Luckily Fulham were very passive.

The passing was terrible. Actually beyond terrible. Would be surprised if we strung 3 together. Hughes and Doucoure might have tried, but had absolutely zero control on the game.

I dont want to be too critical of Doucoure though, given the context of the last couple of years. He was on the grass, and relatively tidy. A long way to go though.

Chilwell was beyond awful, dribbled the ball off the pitch on 2 occasions.

Very hard to criticise the attackers in the first half as they didn't get the ball very often. But Both Osario and Gussand both had the odd purposeful touch. Nketiah took his goal brilliantly, and won lots in the air against Anderson.

As you'd expect, Wharton, Kamada, McNeil, Mitchel and Pino made a huge difference. Pino in particular, his vision and weight of pass was pretty impressive.

Great to have Deno back too, a few saves but 2 very important ones. Cant help feeling Benitez would have let one in last night.

What better teams dont miss they do alot . Because better teams would score 8 per game at least against anyone but they dont . I really hate that statement because there's no proof they would have scored them chances . If your Aunt had bollocks she would be your Uncle but she not . She still your Aunt . We scored they didn't

What start a 2nd strength team. Not manage to string 3 passes together. Put our better players on and play better.

You're correct, however a lot of those guys have barely played. Doucoure obviously the most extreme example. It was encouraging that despite the pressure, we kept a clean sheet under Henderson. And Nketiah scoring is great with JSL injured.

The difference to when the first team guys came on showed massively but it would be valuable for the fringe players, not only in terms of getting some game time but also their confidence at the result.

You're right about the passing though, it was woeful until we made the subs.

Not sure what happened to the “Sage is sage” thread but he deserves huge credit for last night’s result. No one could have predicted 10 changes let alone getting a win with them. A run out for some of our fringe players ahead of Saturday and rested legs for our normal starters. The perfect night. Well done boss!

I usually check the stats, and you are correct in regards to passing. Guessand and Nketiah's passing stats are woeful, closely followed by Chilwell. On the other hand Hughes and Doucoure did well with what they had. I find it is a good gauge of a player if he can find someone in the same shirt as his.

Yep of course. And I wouldn't want to be overly critical of Doucoure. The fact that he was out there is massive.

Personally was most disappointed with Chillwell. Supposed to be our more offensive, cultured LWB, but made lots of in possession mistakes.

Hopefully Nketiah's goal might turn round some of the detractors. He didnt really have any right to get onto that cross, let alone score.

Hopefully it will also get us crossing a bit more. Sometimes I think we can overwork things, but I'd be in favour of us just swinging it in a little earlier sometimes. Both Eddie and JSL have show that this can turn nothing into something.
