FA Cup 3rd Round Macclesfield

I don’t post much on here, I prefer to read than post, but on this occasion I feel I have to put pen to paper so to speak. Firstly I would like to congratulate Macclesfield on their historic win great result. Complete and utter total embarrassment with a piece of unwanted history for our club.
I believe everyone at this club should take responsibility for this result. When this season kick off we knew that there was going to be one hell of a lot matches to play, the squad is just not big enough to cope with the amount of matches being played and that is down to Steve Parish and the board. Yes you can say that we are governed by all these PPF rules, but players should have been bought in.

I read an article Oliver Glasner believe said in a pre match report before the FA Cup match that we go to Macclesfield as the face of this Competition to go there as champions it will be honour to represent and show pride in our defence of being the FA cup winners. HA !
I solely blame OG for this result he talks You don't need tactics in these kinds of games. You just have to show what you're capable of and show a little bit of pride, and you'll perform in a different way "But today we lacked everything."

You, Mr Glasner selected the team you put them players out on the pitch, how many of these younger players have any first team experience. Yes you stated that the team was going to be rotated, but maybe you should have made sure that the match result was sewn up before you started throwing on younger talent. As for the senior players that played, they need to stand up and be counted. Supporters pay hard earned money and work hard and show their support day in day out, they don’t expect crap like this performance.
As someone else posted, I don’t want OG leaving I think he is the best manager we have had at this club. But I think he should stay, knuckle down and commit to this club and build more history like our FA cup win.

OG looked fuming after the match but it has been so very quiet from a players point of view other than Marc praising Macclesfield. Very disappointing that none of them have (as far as I am aware) commented or apologised, I feel sorry for those supporters that managed to get a ticket. Not sure when this feeling of anger will subside 😡
the only ones that need to be apologised to is the ones that traveled , the rest of us was in the warm having beer or something , so we could just stop watching they couldn't , also Marc and Paddy spent time with the traveling fans at the end , so stop being angry not good for the sole ,

I looked at it this way , My best friend would have been all over this taking the piss for weeks , sadly he passed away from cancer I watched him slowly die , which do you think I would be happier with , my friend being alive or us beating macclesfield I know what I would want 😍

Thought I’d be feeling better by now but I’m getting worse. Not helped by two days of abuse from everyone I know and every time I turn on the sports news. When will it get better? When we win a game. When’s that going to be….April?

As others have said, when you take a step back and look at it objectively: it was a very Crystal Palace way of defending a trophy. The football gods write their own story and this is what makes football and especially the FA Cup so great. Macclesfield now have their own immortal moment.

After getting a squad that is consistently able to stay in the Premier League, the next hardest thing is to make a step change into a regular European / domestic cup contenders.

In truth, we were only going to be able to make a handful of signings after the Cup win (as no-one wants to do a Leeds) and they haven't really come off.

Hopefully, this result will refocus us and we'll have a decent rest of season. We can put all our resources into the League and the Cup and not get too knackered in the process.

Through all of this I hope whoever is looking for the best young players in the Championship keeps doing that as that is the lifeblood of the club.

Now the storm has settled, and a decent sleep, reflection says well done Macclesfield, you did it for McLeod, the chap who died on M1, this is way bigger than football, and big up to Smethurst, just heard him on TalkSPORT, no gloating as you’d expect, pretty humble I’d say. Don’t know where the heck Macclesfield is but I’m gonna start looking out for their results, and wish them great success.
In amongst the bed-wetting, it has to be said that Macclesfield were excellent, they knew the task in hand and were up for it. They played like it was a cup final, 11 vs 11 and we played like it was training.

Can't remember their captain's name but he reminded me of Palace warriors of old, the Shaun Derry/Clint Hill/Alan Lee/Michael Hughes/Mile Jedinak/Joel Ward/Mark Guehi (of last season) types who would battle to get the job done.

I don't think using the youngsters was the wrong move - in fact we've all been screaming for rotation as a way to ease our woes. Rodney, D-T and Canvot should have been good enough for this test, and in fact I don't think they did anything particularly worse than anyone else, in fact they we the only ones who showed any desire. But it was the senior players who all had the same laissez-faire attitude. They were so far off the pace they'd been lapped 3 times, when they needed to be up front supporting and guiding the rest.

Glasner has a very laid back demeanour, and I think that rubbed off on the attitude of the team. I can't imagine him having the stereotyped 'Hairdryer' motivation technique - or even raise his voice ever!.. he's more of a sulky disappointment kinda guy.

I’m 59 years old, and I feel like a little kid that can’t wait for the draw tomorrow, we are also in the 5th round draw for the FA trophy tomorrow but my guess is the players will have over celebrated and we will lose to Woking, not a bad thing as we have fixture pile up now and we play 46 league games too!
Hope you get a nice plum away tie. How about Man City just up the road? Or would you prefer a trip to London to play Arsenal or Chelsea or even West Ham (or Wet Spam as many Palace fans call them)?

It’s very difficult to get a true perspective of what happened and why. After all we have fringe players on £12,000 a week Macclesfield weekly wage bill probably doesn’t exceed that. We were well below our own standards, but Macclesfield were great on the day, it’s not meant to patronise but well above their norm, a fantastic performance by them.

I'm feeling better. I don't think people will remember The Palace part in this as much as they will the Macclesfield part...if that makes sense.
The last great upset Sutton v Coventry- no one really rips into Coventry but some still remember their great cup win.

That's how I think it will go - people remember us for winning the Cup and Macclesfield for a great upset.
The press have already moved on to Man United.
We're today's fish and chip wrapping paper.

Be strong lads and ladies. It will get better.

Bed wetting? We lost to a team five divisions lower than us in one of the worst cup results in history!

exactly - only Palace could have defended the trophy so woefully. When i got back in the car i changed channel away from Radio 5 live and the first item on the news (not the sport) was our defeat. This is a 1 in 100 year event. Being in the crowd there were very few vocal criticism of the team or the manager around me - i suspect many had silently prayed in May during the 10 minutes of injury time that if we win then we're happy to accept never winning a cup game again.

I remember after the 1990 final i think we lost in the 3rd round for the next 4 or 5 years, including the Hartlepool defeat (to a terrible dive BTW - i'm not bitter!). The gods have their way of evening things out.

Whilst the players must take a massive amount of blame - the guy who scored with the header was 5 ft 10! - i think OG has been massively found wanting.

Surely the Shelbourne line up was a blueprint for this game - reasonably strong with a decent forward line up and then sub at half time. Where were the goals in that side. Pino has been poor for weeks, his right foot shot when the ball was on his left side showed the guy is completely lacking in confidence, and Drake Thomas is 16 or so and has never played. Surely Johnson should have started (although he showed he was incapable of beating his man when he did come on). Our best attacking option in the first half was via Devenny at RWB who is playing out of position.

The 3 at the back and the slow build up is our approach when we play prem teams, surely we needed something more against Macc who were quite happy to sit back and get into shape.

Once the scored i knew the crowd would be up for it and the timewasting would be terrible, which it was, but we definitely got what we deserved.

This was arguably the perfect storm - poor recruitment, a small squad, questionable loans out (why was Esse allowed to go 2 days before this game - he was an obvious starter or impact sub - instead we put on a 17 year old for the last 15 minutes!), an inflexible manager and overpaid players.

The Palace way!

The Palace way!
I wonder how the team will be received at our next home game. I wouldn't like to see them booed on to the pitch, but a silent lack of the usual applause might bring it home to them how much they've let us down and the humiliation we've had to endure...

I saw a line this morning, that this was the first time a non-league team has knocked out a top tier team in the FA Cup since 1908/1909, when Wolves were knocked out by a little known non-league club called Crystal Palace!

Haven't fact checked that, but this is getting more palace by the minute with a certain level of historic symmetry going on.

it's the first time a 'cup holder' has been knocked out by a non-league side since 1909 when first division Wolves were knocked out by non-league Crystal Palace 😳. All handle bar moustaches and knickerbockers. Sutton beat Coventry and Wimbledon beat Burnley since then prob others too, Yeovil?
