Given all the thousands of words that appeared on the old site about the EU it is a little surprising that it hasn't yet been a topic here.

Following the second coming of the American Messiah, the debate over the merits of us rejoining the EU is already lively on other forums and being openly contemplated in some political circles. I can only see that momentum growing. With Starmer meeting Macron today I would be surprised if cautious optimism didn't result.

Many feel that the argument that we are better off inside the EU than outside has been greatly strengthened by Trump's victory and his attitude. Unsurprisingly I agree although I realise it's not imminent. We will need to feel some pain before the obvious cure gets overwhelmingly popular.

Though I doubt whether too many here will avail themselves of the opportunity to sign it there is a petition on this which can be found here:-

Petition: Apply for the UK to join the European Union as a full member as soon as possible

Thanks WE we'll see how it goes.....

The UK generally unable to even discuss brexit because it is such a failure, it is in the HS2 bracket, all it needs is a bat-shed.

We'd better get on to Bruce Wayne and see if he's got one to spare.

More like no one will discuss the failure of the EU. All across it - except Ireland, anti-EU parties gaining ground.
Discuss it and our glorious unelected leaders might have to hear how horridly racist and far right we are. Loads of countries closing their borders - racist, Nazi fuckers obviously.
No doubt the UK will rejoin the EU just as it falls apart. It's not too big to fail.

That's not correct.

We left the EU but nobody else has. It is not true to assume that the right want to leave it, they want to blame it of course just like we blame our politicians.

Why would they want to make themselves poorer and make their problems worse.

Brexit was an example to them they do not wish to follow.

😎

It is correct, for a start I live in the EU - it's more expensive than the UK. Secondly, no other country has been given the choice.
The people's only other choice - voting for right wing parties.

Reintroducing border controls as reality continues to kick in. Reality has a habit of disrupting the idiotic ideas of the Left.

Glad you have stopped whining and moved on 👍

Actually you live in Ireland, which remains a member of the EU. If it is actually more expensive than the UK, which seems both unlikely and very difficult to accurately determine, then why attribute it to EU membership? The EU is far from economically homogeneous.

Looks like a convenient scapegoat to me.

TBF he probably has more inside knowledge about the cost of living than you

It has nothing whatsoever to do with any “ideas of the left”. The way some people seek to attribute everything to politics is ridiculous and pathetic.

It only concerns the practical need to control the activities of the people smugglers. If that means having physical checks at appropriate places then it’s just using common sense. Not ideology.

According to surveys Ireland is between 13.7 & 16% more expensive than the UK
VAT is 23% and income tax is higher.

By no means the only metric. The level of income, cost of housing etc all need to be considered. It’s not the level of taxation that matters. It’s ultimately the quality of life that the economy delivers to the people. That’s difficult to measure.

In any event, whether more expensive or not, blaming the EU isn’t appropriate.

The point was that Ireland is more expensive. Prices are higher ergo it's more expensive.
