Do We Have a Responsibility?

When somebody joins an online debate, who is clearly so mentally ill that they may be dangerous to themselves or others, do we have a responsibility to intervene?

Are we complicit in their breakdown, or their forthcoming rampage with a homemade weapon if we do nothing? Or if we bait them? Or if we coddle them and support their human right to lunacy?

What could we even do?

I sometimes feel guilty. Should we help and would they even welcome help?

It could get a bit quiet on here.
 
my carer says i cannot log onto HOL unless i take a double dose of my meds first. She said i was being childish.

Talk about a lack of respect. And then she burst into the bathroom , while i was sitting in the bath and she sunk all my boats.

in fairness, you cannot really have an opinion on the Middle East without being nuts. I confess to being quite insane, yet even i don't go near the Israel/Hamas discussion for fear of ending up sectioned in Bedlam.

I don't know who, but I will say that I am less concerned by WHAT people say sometimes and more HOW they say it. I once took a five year hiatus from this forum in support of someone who had significantly different viewpoints to me. Didn't agree with much he ever said but I felt like his contribution was valuable and he got slapped wrists for something. I forget what.

I like debate, varying perspectives. I probably rarely change my stance but perhaps alter my perception a smidge. However, there may be a user that sounds so rabid I am half expecting to hear he's gone berserk and blown up a shopping centre. Utterly unhinged in his communication. There may well be some valid points being made but totally drowns himself out howling at the moon.
