I always rated him highly and remember him scoring some vital goals, especially when we were promoted to the First Division in 1979. I was recently reminded that Terry Venables allowed him to move to Derby County in February 1980, which seemed very odd to me. Does anyone here know the story behind this, and why he was allowed to leave?

Blimey, I thought he'd died for a moment.

I hope not, although you can never be certain. I gather that Ian Walsh was diagnosed with prostate cancer a year or so ago, and you probably know that Paul Hinshelwood passed away three years ago. It's just part of a project that I'm working on right now about the Palace team of that era.

Some of the first games I went too were with tickets supplied by Dave. My mates grandad was his GP. His wife/girlfriend was heavily pregnant at the time. My god that unborn child must be knocking on 50 now 😳

Yes. Read an interview with the man himself who explained what happened.

Swindlehurst was a good friend of Steve Kember’s and was annoyed that Gerry Francis was being played instead of him. He didn’t feel Francis was fit enough.

Swindlehurst made the mistake of having a chat with a ‘fan’ about this one day, but it turned out to be a reporter, who wrote an article in the papers stating that a senior Palace player wasn’t happy with the way things were being run.

Venables went mad when he saw it and kept the players in the dressing room demanding to know who said it. Swindlehurst put his hand up and admitted it and that was it.

He was banished to the reserves for the next five games or so. Swindlehurst then asked for a move as he felt he wouldn’t regain his place, and then Derby came in and took him on loan.

Funny enough but I had a chat with Steve Kember just before Christmas and we talked about this.

Venables also blamed Steve for this and the two fell out and never did patch things up. Steve left Palace and moved to Vancouver Whitecaps.

Spent many an evening chatting with Steve in his wine bar or at the cricket club. Those were the days when footballers weren't overpaid prima donnas and the connection between club and fans was at its best.

My first game was Burnley in 89 when we got promoted as champions. Look forward to your writing. Please let me know when available.

I see Jean-Philippe Mateta as the new Dave Swindlehurst. Funny Dave thought Gerry Francis was keeping him out of the team seeing they played in different positions, but in his first season Francis was quite overweight and struggling through coming off a two year absence from a broken leg so Dave might well have questioned Francis's regularity in the first team, second season Francis was like Franz Beckenbauer and along with Lombardo and Olise is the best player I have seen in a Palace shirt. It's a pity the rest of the team were so far behind him in 80-81 after so many followed TV to QPR and Clive Allen didn't have the players around him to show his class. I thought Swindlehust was better suited to West Ham's style of play when he went there, we were a bit tippy tappy under Venables for his powerful centre forward play.

That’s a comparison I never thought I’d see 🤣

He didn't !

Dave ( and a number of other players so I'm told ) wanted Steve Kember restored to the team in place of Gerry Francis.

I'm more than happy to tell people when and if it's available. It's taking a while at the moment. I'm a teacher, so finding the time and energy during term time isn't easy, but I'll be able to get more done later in the year. The other thing I'm hoping to do is intervew as many of the home-grown members of that team as possible. And maybe Martin Hinshelwood on behalf of his late brother. I have contacted the club about this, but they haven't replied yet. It sounds as if some people here know some of the players, so if anyone here can help, that would be brilliant. Ideally I would like it to eventually be produced in conjunction with the club so it could include loads of photos of the era, but maybe I'm being over-ambitious. That being said, Ian King, the club's official historian, has been really helpful. It was inspired, if that's the right word, by reading Stephen Brandt's absolutely terrible book on the matter, and I reckoned I could produce something much better.

Good luck with your project wpdavid. I certainly would not be the only one that would be eager to read such a book.

On photos; have you thought of contacting Hy Money too? She has some fantastic photos from that era, all displayed in her book ‘Hy on Palace’.

One of my favourites is a picture of Billy Gilbert sat in the changing rooms after the Burnley promotion game, with a 15 year old Andy Gray sat next to him.
