I always rated him highly and remember him scoring some vital goals, especially when we were promoted to the First Division in 1979. I was recently reminded that Terry Venables allowed him to move to Derby County in February 1980, which seemed very odd to me. Does anyone here know the story behind this, and why he was allowed to leave?

I think it was mainly money.
Derby paid £410,000, which was a record fee for the club at that time.

Blimey, I thought he'd died for a moment.
I hope not, although you can never be certain. I gather that Ian Walsh was diagnosed with prostate cancer a year or so ago, and you probably know that Paul Hinshelwood passed away three years ago. It's just part of a project that I'm working on right now about the Palace team of that era.
