Crystal Palace vs. Southampton match thread

Arsenal constantly impede goalkeepers from corners and that is always applauded by pundits as fantastic organisation by the set piece coach. They get away with it time and time again yet we do it and people are saying we got a lucky decision from VAR. All you want is consistent decisions for the big clubs and the smaller clubs.

To be fair everyone I’ve seen analyse yesterday said it was right the goal stood rather than it being lucky for us

I suspect that had such an incident involved our goalkeeper and the goal was allowed to stand, many of our supporters would be 'Spitting feathers' !

Surely the whole idea of Glasner’s set up is that the wing backs provide the attacking width rather than having traditional wingers. If they cannot perform this function to his satisfaction then they don’t fit into his system.

Mitchell is a good, solid 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 full back but not a wing back.

By playing a back three, those three are supposed to address any shortcomings of the wingbacks venturing forward. If our fullbacks get stuck defending full time then we get outnumbered when attacking and as a result our attacks are only ever effective when fast breaking. We can’t rely on this solely as it’s too easy to defend if that’s our only threat.

As for whether there are players out there, we found Munoz for £8m (from memory), so yes there must be. Apparently we are currently considering a couple of foreign league players.

Youngsters wise I am disappointed that Adaramola has not progressed at all as he always looked sharp going forward, as did Reece Hannam but both have faded into obscurity.

Yes, I agree that based on history of where he has played, Schlupp would have been ideally placed as a Mitchell replacement or cover but I can only think he has never impressed OG in training. Personally I think he is finished and this is his last season.
I would suggest that Southamptons goal yesterday would have been defended better if on Mitchell’s side. Munoz was easily beaten for the cross. My points were more about the strengths both our wingbacks have being one is better than the other defending with the other better going forward. I think I prefer that, especially at corners for us where our back 3 go into the box and Mitchell hangs back. In saying Munoz is better going forward, he misses a lot of chances by being a bit too quick at times racing into the box?

Although I was as relieved as you that the goal wasn't ruled out, I'm not sure it's always decided so clearly and unambiguously, either in the PL or in Europe. I remember last season when Hendo was obstructed in his goal area in similar situations and different decisions were made. I also thought that Calobah had turned around briefly before celebrating the goal just to realise that a hesitant celebration could give the referee and the VAR stupid ideas.
Having watched the incident on MOTD, I then watched the Scottish Football highlights and there was an identical incident in the Motherwell v Rangers game. Jack Butland pushed the Motherwell striker who did exactly as Mateta did. The ref gave the goal but VAR overturned the decision and the goal was disallowed.

Add Milan, Atletico & Barca to the clickbait mix. Still, at least it'll stop supporters slagging him off every game even when we win, with him assisting, hey ho.

If i were Mitchell, I would jump at the chance. If he stays and we get a proper wing back instead of a full back, he won't even make our team. Why risk it? If they are serious then go.

Eze scored a great goal, but he clearly is not happy. First half he wasn't there.
He is an exceptional talent but sadly we dont seem able to accommodate him to help him find the space he needs to perform. I wonder if this will change when Wharton comes back. Also if we get a LWB who plays like Munoz, it will change this whole space issue for Eze, pushing him into inside left which is where he needs to be.

Even the oracle that is Dermot Gallagher thought it was a goal.
Ah, the late great Dermot Gallagher! Second only to Mark Clatt as the worst referee on the planet. Cast your mind back to February 2003, Palace at home to Leeds in the Cup sixth round. Tommy Black blasts a shot which hit Leeds defender Michael Duberrry on the arm. Duberry is in the goal behind the goal line. So it is either a goal or a penalty, as is clear to those of us in the Holmesdale Upper at the other end. But Gallagher gives neither. Palace would have gone 2-1 up but instead lost the game. I once saw Gallagher complain on tv that "everyone keeps bringing that up". We should continue to do so, in case anyone thinks he is worth listening to. Six 'goals' that were ruled out

I suspect my neighbours dread Ref Watch being screened what with the amount of shouting and swearing from my house being hurled in Mr. Gallagher's direction.

'Munoz not really a great defender, he is better going forward'. Final score pundit Robinson's verdict on the Saints opening goal.

Of course you leave yourself open and teams like Arsenal will exploit it.

On balance I am a Munoziteer.

Gallagher was correct with that decision.

Mitchell put us under pressure so many times in the first half with repeated unforced errors. Even in the second half he was filling in on the right side of the back 3 whilst we had an attacking corner / free kick and instead of a simple cushion header to Hughes, who was in acres of space, he headed it straight to the Southampton left sided attacker and they were straight on us with a dangerous attack. Most teams would’ve punished us from that but thankfully Southampton were fairly blunt in attack. Desperately need the LWB position improved.
Cheer up! Clickbait has Barcelona, Arsenal and Spurs coming in for him 😎
