Crystal Palace vs. Millwall match thread

If OG has his doubts then he shouldn't have started Esse, just stick him on in the second half. Not a fan of pulling him off at half time like that, after subbing him on then off against LFC. Killed his confidence.
Completely agree, not the way to improve a young player. I agree with OG on nearly everything but don't like his handling of the Esse situation.

I thought a draw was a fair result over 90 minutes, but our penalties were atrocious. Quite proud of our youngsters tonight. 6 of them started. One was a debut and the others rarely start for the first team, if ever. We have 7 or 8 first team regulars out so I thought we done ourselves proud over all.

Anyway, Good luck in the next round, I hope you lose. 😊🦁
Thought you guys played well and created some great chances. Sturge, Balla and Sakha(?) look very decent prospects I thought.

Game was a hard watch , we was out of sync , passing was awful at best , wasnt happy with the fact when Pino won the ball and then passed 3 palace players wasnt looking at him to receive the ball no wonder he was angry ,
Pino will settle in the more he plays and does chase back , so hes looking good , Uche needs to learn to stop going down easy , its prem not la liga , but showed lots of promise , Matty is knackerd needs a rest cant believe he missed that chance ,
Now talking of chances Esse just didn't do anything ,wouldn't move to the ball , always to near the defenders instead of looking for space , no energy at all , and im not buying it that OG hurt his feelings by subbing him after 5mins against Liverpool hes a professional footballer for god sake , needs to grow up and prove OG wrong but I cant see that happening ,
Canvot looks good for a young CB hopefully he keeps improving more , so with Wharton back , Sarr not far behind things are shaping up well , 16 and counting , COYP

Glasner said post match that if you take a player off after 45 minutes it’s obvious that you are unhappy with his display.
I’m not sure Esse makes the bench when our injured players return and I’m not sure when he will get game time.
He hasn’t got that much experience, and it may have been better for him to go on loan to play regular first team football and regain his confidence, but the departures of Franca and JRS and the failure to bring in Salomon meant that a loan for Esse probably wasn’t an option.
It’s early days for him and of course we all hope in time he will be more of an Olise than a Malcolm E or a Plange.

What has disappointed me to date is the lacklustre contribution of Sosa, and I’m sure he can do better.
I had nightmares we were back to Roy’s days with Sosa’s soft chipped corners into the opposing keeper’s hands.
He also provided a few aimless crosses and provided no real drive or impetus down our left.
I know Sosa can do better from his displays with Croatia where he has provided a series of whipped crosses and added real verve down the left side.

Completely different playing a Championship team. Less flare and a more direct/physical approach taken by Millwall. They were really fired up, played the high press and gave our players very little time to think when they had the ball.

If anything, it was good to experience this type of football and can only develop our all round game. It certainly will not be the same against West Ham.

Agree with everything said about Esse. He is still learning his trade and it’s all about what type of character he is. Hopefully he will acknowledge he still has a great deal to learn.

Um, okay. Calm down sunshine. My eyes are firmly wide open. And you'll find 90% of Palace fans are on the same page. It's great Daichi is improving. But to be fair, he couldn't have got much worse than the first half of last season.

They are not, you want the guy to do bad.

Maybe just reflect on the fact that Glasner keeps picking him, and he will be in our first choice midfield all season. You are clearly missing something.

I thought it was an odd choice to start Esse this game. If anybody out there knows how to exploit his weaknesses it's the team where he just spent eleven years playing.

And somehow I think OG knows that. Kinda feels like he just doesn't like him and is happy to sabotage him.

😱 Do you think he's been texting his daughter?

Maybe he was trying to get a rise (in tempo) out of him? Thinking; old club, something to prove, cup match, lower league oppo etc, he'd be busting a gut to make an impression.

If he played well, he could kick on. If he had a stinker, even Esse himself knows that he has a lot of work to do.

Regardless, the clamour to give him game time has to end now. And hopefully he'll get a loan move in Jan.

Perhaps that’s why he pulled him off at half time?

(Sorry, couldn’t resist it…)

I don't think our passing has been that bad in years. No one seemed to be able to play simple passes, let alone more difficult ones. Hughes was one of our better players, but even he was guilty of misplaced passes. Had our passing been of the usual standard we probably would have won comfortably in normal time. I wonder if Millwall's physical approach threw the players off their game?

Esse showed a couple of glimpses of his talent, but they were brief and he looked completely shorn on confidence. It is going to be a big test of his character and maturity as to whether he can now prove his worth to Glasner. In his defence, he wasn't really much worse than anyone else, but that's not really much of a defence! He's still young though, so there's no rush.

I am in agreement with the general thrust of these comments.
Overall an uninspiring performance but we are through to the next round.

Pro football is a very tough world.
Esse was way out of his depth last night.
Glasner did the right thing subbing him.
Personally, I will be very surprised if he ever makes it at Prem level.
Same goes for JRS and most of our youngsters at the academy.
The premier is a completely different world.
Not forgetting last night Millwall are mid table 2nd tier which anyway is huge drop down from the Prem.
Its why Glasner keeps banging on about having such a small squad.

Our passing was very strange - it was almost as though we were playing on an artificial pitch for the first time but you'd expect the direction to be right even if the weight was wrong.
Pino had a rough night but he'll possibly find Premier League games more to his taste when the referees/VAR tend not to allow such a, let's say, robust approach.

Apropos Esse, perhaps the occasion, playing against his former club and supporters, and the fact that in his mind was the thought he had to really prove himself after being given a start, contributed to his lacklustre performance.
I started to feel sorry for the young lad and firmly believed that he would not return for the second half.
He must be very disappointed with his overall showing and feeling rather despondent.

Millwall may have done us a favour by roughing up some of our players last night. Welcome to England etc.

Anyway if Pino didn't know before he knows now that English football is fast and aggressive and you cannot afford to dwell on the ball.

I think he will be fine once he adjusts.

IMO it points to a bigger frustration with Esse. If the player hasn't been following instructions in training and then does the same on the pitch, thinking he knows better, then putting a spotlight on it in the way Glasner did post-match might be the kick up the backside Esse needs.

It's then a test of Esse's character whether he is able to adapt and grow or continue whatever he's been doing.

Perhaps Glasner has tried the 'arm around him' style and he hasn't responded. So now it's this or realistically he's not gonna play for us again unless he improves.
