I have no idea how people can see something so differently. He bossed it tonight...played both crucial passes in lead up to goals and made some crucial tackles, breaking up dangerous plays. Boggles the mind.

The start was horrendous, and a decent team would have finished us early doors. Pino gave the ball away three times in the first 5 minutes, all within 20 yards of the goal
Main positive was Larsen, who as well as his goals did pretty well when we finally decided to kick long. Something we need as the passing through the press was no better than against Fulham. Otherwise, standouts were Benitez, Kamada, Disasi and Ahanor. The latter two may only be loans, but they may make the difference between relegation and safety. I thought Gozo made more impact than Osorio, who was very disappointing

Plodding around behind the action, Boro having so much ball and reaching our defensive line with ease, gave him a bit of space when the ball did eventually come to him, a cunning strategy. In reality he's so off the pace it's laughable.
In his defence he wasn't the only guilty party. The midfield and those further forward all failed miserably in the "press".

Yes, they were the better team. Two goals and an assist from JSL, but gosh he has very few qualities that makes him a PL player. Hopefully will yesterday's game give him a bit of confidence, but honestly - 48 mill. for the Norwegian was a huge waste of money. Unless of course, he keep on scoring.....

Hughes bossed the midfield? Slower than ever before,backward passing and nothing but a sub from now on. The Boro-lads made him look like an old pensioner on his daily stroll in the park.

Hughes could even have scored himself in the second half. He should have hit it first time with his left, sweeping it towards goal. Instead he tried to get it over to his right and by then was blocked,
JSL isn't hugely different from Benteke, in the respect that he is great in the air.
I can remember 3 crosses last night. 1 Chilwell overhit, the other two JSL scored from.
We are right to demand more from JSL, but we also need to be aware of his strengths. We need to be sticking crosses in.

Osorio put the ball on a plate for Larsen's first, with a sublime cross. The boy needs time but he did enough to say he might get better. He needs to sharpen up. Spend this season in the gym more and improve diet. Both will happen and we will see the outcome.
I agree.
Hughes was the dominant midfielder on the field.
Constantly involved, making interceptions and linking up the passes with his teammates.
If Kamada is pushed into a more advanced role as seems to be the case at present, I see Hughes as the most effective partner for Wharton, at least until it becomes clearer what Timber can offer.

Interesting mixed reviews for Hughes (and also Mingueza) and I think there is an element of truth in both sides. As a team we started terribly, completely off the pace with poor passing and allowing them to get into our box at will - those two were particularly noticeable in their failings.
We got the first goal though, Mingueza did well in that and we increasingly mopped up Boro’s attacks better then hit them on the break. Hughes looked like an older player playing his first start of the season - still has ability but took him a while to get up to speed. He won’t be in our strongest starting XI but has a role to play.

Technically speaking, if the opposition can reach our defensive line time and time again with ease, as was the case against Fulham and Boro, it means that there's something wrong in the set-up further up the pitch. Tactical arrangement, calibre of player, all contribute to a lack of balance.
I was at the match last night and thought Mingueza was the new Sosa. Absolutely turned over on every attack. Didn't stick to his man and was chasing shadows. Did put in a nice cross for the 1st goal and learnt to tackle in the 80th minute.
Osario... looked very weak - the new Brennan! A shame as we had 3 Chileans in front of us, complete with kit and flag.
Disasi I love - big unit, wise, our best centre back by a mile.
Gozo not on long enough to make an impression but ran his socks off. I think he'll be exciting.
McNeil again not much time to settle in. Got involved in a few moves. Think he'll be OK.
Chilwell- absolute class. His movement, organisation, attacking... top class. Great signing.
In January we need a permanent centre back in the Disasi mould so we're not trying to bed one in next September.
Overall... Boro' should have been out of sight at half time. Should have brought their main striker on and taken some shots. As someone else said - watching us play from the back was terrifying!!

I think this game sums up our squad this season. Lots of changes from the Fulham game Nino loss in standard. From the keeper to JSL all decent enough to start our next game but no stand outs. Having said that I would choose this back three if fit enough. In midfield I’m struggling to decide our best two. Wharton was wayward last night and gave the ball away too much. Hughes is his usual steady self but struggles a bit with the pace of the game under Sage. Did well to play 90 minutes. Timber is promising but also prone to lose the ball.
Up front Pino is developing into a decent provider for JSL and Kamada is so much better further forward although I wonder if Wharton is missing him by his side.
As many have said, we’re a work in progress but improving game on game.

Wasn't McNeil's crossing suggested as his main strength? If he only plays with JSL and only concentrates on banging it over for him every time he might be an asset. He might have to play it from a bit deep though since he didn't seem to have much pace.
