Crystal Palace vs Man Utd match thread

I tend to agree and have posted similar for some time. We're Crystal Palace and we are what we are. We're not Glasner FC oven-ready players when you want. We rely on developing youth or rough diamonds. I'm tempted to say we've missed a huge chance to develop a couple of players this season. It's hard to know because they're not getting the chances. Esse is the main one really. Looked promising, scored on debut. Barely used since. Hooked off for dribbling. I didn't agree with that. I hope he can still shine. I also personally believe Rak-Sakyi is good enough and it isn't long until Imray will be. With Glasner will any ever be used?
I don't think Glasner's and Parish's visions align. Which should all have been discussed but sounds like it's coming out in the press more than in conversations.
I witnessed Esse on television playing for Millwall match and he was certainly not a stand-out performer.
When I heard about our interest in him I contacted an avid Millwall supporter whose judgement on football matters I respect. He commented that Esse was one of the best that Millwall had produced for some time but he was one for the future, not PL ready.

It could be using the same team leads to the debacle though couldn't it? Fresh legs and a desire to impress could easily win the day against, frankly, absolutely s*** teams. They're not League One standard. Nor were Larnaka, nor are Kups. That's actually part of the issue here. We're compounding our own issues by not giving people the chance to impress.
I guess the proof is in the pudding...

The debate has centred around the comments of Glasner rather than on the game instead !
I have long maintained that I was not expecting Glasner to be at our club next season.
I have messages on my phone this morning from those outside of HOL interested to be in receipt of my comments. 👍
By my recollection this is the fourth time Glasner has called out the board for lack of support and broken promises.
That's not a one off but a pattern and it doesn't augur well for him staying beyond the summer.
So far Parish has kept his counsel on these public utterances although I doubt he's too happy about them.
Glasner is not the first manager to call out a chairman/owner for lack of support and he won't be the last.
I think Glasner's observations have merit because the squad isn't strong enough to meet the demands.
Parish has to see the big picture and future direction which is of less concern to a driven Glasner with short term goals.

This is the ever present tension at football clubs and can only be solved when the owner and manager is the same person!
(anybody remember Ron Noades at Brentford)?

He's never going to be ready if he doesn't play. That's the bottom line. The our outlay on him is wasted.

I know I'm being greedy with the success of Eze, Guehi, Olise and Wharton, but don't you wish we had just offered that bit more to secure Semenyo and N'Diaye when we had the chance?
Hindsight don't you just love it ,I wish I could have beat Peter Sellers to the airport -Dang!

Absolutely.

Apropos Strasbourg, prior to the match I commented on HOL about their impressive home record this season and the fact that they had only conceded 2 goals in those 6 games. Interestingly, the match commentator mirrored my stats !!
I also praised Liam Rosenior and I for one was fully expressing a challenging encounter. This was not the game to introduce the 'Fringe' players into the starting 11.
Had we taken our chances we should have had 4 or five. that we are not at the moment is a slight worry but the fact we are creating puts us in a good position. This competition would be better as a knock out from the start IMHO

I was very surprised to hear OG calling the Board out yesterday.
Not long ago, he was comfortable with the situation and maybe he should concentrate on us scoring goals instead?
Thursday and yesterday, shooting boots would have seen two wins by half time but instead Parish is to blame.
He has gone right down in my estimation after those interviews.

I was 'Spitting feathers' on account of our dire second half performance and commented on HOL just before I intended to raise my rump from my seat and head to the exit door with great rapidity.
With my emotions now in control, and on reflection, I appreciate that rigours of all the games this season are taking their toll and I understand Glasner has expressed comments about the lack of investment in the summer.
The drop-off in performance in the second period from the first half was palpable and of course we lost against Strasbourg to two second-half goals.
Once again Mateta was less than impressive in front of goal, not hitting the target when well placed and it appears that Nketiah is not suited to the No 10 role.
No thrust at all from Mitchell and Munoz and the wing-backs are important in the Glasner system.
Once again Pino was disappointing.
There will be alarm bells ringing if we lose at Burnley.
Willo - tiredness plays a part but we should have had the game won by half time - same as last Thursday.
JPM had one gold plated chance and do not get me started on Nketiah and his sluggishness and not even getting a shot away.
United changed at half time and ran after everything and nullified our play.
OG should concentrate on scoring goals - we are 3rd in that table behind Liverpool and City and our midfield do not score any goals at all.

I am yet to be persuaded by this argument.
His comments in Austria reflected his disappointment apropos our dealings in the 'Window'.
Since then he has kept a stony silence but yesterday his pent-up feelings on the back of a defeat came to the fore.

I wasn't keen on his acquisition, he had plenty of chances at Arsenal but never looked the real deal, nevertheless gave him a chance because he's in Red and Blue but have to say... thus far a waste of money that could have been spent better elsewhere. Oliver Glasner will go and Eddie Nketiah will still be here working with the new manager, does that bode well? I don't think so.

I recall seeing Nketiah play for Leeds under Bielsa and I was not overly impressed.
I believe that I opined as such on HOL.
At this juncture the deal of £25 Mill rising to £30 Mill does not appear to be good use of our finances.

Second half yesterday we came out and we were flat. Tired, despondent? Our heads had dropped. Same at Strasbourg. The mood from the first half (until Sarr went off) had gone.
Looks to me like we are being overplayed. Even the manager is now moaning.
Most premier clubs who are in the conference historically have used it as a testing ground for their juniors
We are putting our best 12-14 players out in ALL our games and the effects are now clearly catching us up.
We need to do something radical now to correct our slide. Why dont we make the conscious decision to use the conference as above. Not a cat in hell chance of us doing well in all the contests. We need to focus and recognise our number one limitation.....small squad. Too small to compete on all fronts. Glasner said it is too late to bring in reinforcement in January and I agree.
So we have to prioritise. No point in burying our heads in the sand as we are doing. We must prioritise the Premier surely.
We have to adjust or we could really come unstuck.
One of our best goal scoring players, Sarr is now out, possibly for a couple of months due to the Africa cup.
Without him, there is little sign of goals. AT all.
I am seriously worried. Following Glasner's harsh words aimed at our money men yesterday he surely has to prioritise what we go for. We can't do it all. Its not working.
Come on Glasner. You know it makes sense. Blindingly expecting 14-16 players to pull off all competitions is ridiculous. We need to change our plan. Today.

I suspect that Glasner is cognisant of this fact but then considers his 'Fringe' players and deems "I don't trust them to deliver". In his mindset "If only the club could have provided me with more quality in the summer and earlier in the window".

One thing I'll say for Glasner is: what is the point of multi billionaire owners? We're like paupers who can never do anything. It reminds me of Ebenezer Scrooge. Maybe he's thinking that too. Blitzer, Harris, Johnson - all pointless so far.
One owner is what we need first. Not this whatever it is.

As I have mentioned before we are constrained by Financial Rules Regulations and our revenue is dwarfed by some of the other clubs.
I see the current situation through the prism of both the club and Glasner.

Even if he’s right. Is that what you say in public? Parish is a true guardian of the club. He might not get it right all the time but he has its interests at heart.

And he is coming across like a spoiled brat. It’s the timing. He said it when he was upset coz we lost another match we should have won. Those goals we didn’t take were in the 1st halves. That’s not tiredness. (Although the players are clearly knackered) First time I have been disappointed at OG. He came across pathetically. Which is a shame.

It was nice while it lasted. Cheerio
Whether or not Glasner doesn't sign another contract I don't think you can take what he say's 20 minutes after a match as gospel . During calmer moments like pre match interviews he often turns to someone and asks "Is that how you say it ?" which would suggest he hasn't quite got a grasp of Oxford English even if his English is better than most natives . Change a few words and you get a completely different meaning to what he is saying .

Having said that there is obviously a conflict between manager and board . Glasner wants his cv filled with trophies and can see the opportunity to win one this season . Parish it seems is not sure ,despite last seasons glorious Cup win along with the Charity shield at the start of this one . He is aware it could all go pear shaped very quickly if he backs Glasner to the hilt .

We could end up not winning anything , have no money for the stand ,Glasner walks and we end up with a big squad on 4 -5 year contracts with no European football next year. Steve Parish is right to be cautious

Maybe so Willo, maybe so. The problem is today, we've got ELEVEN games to play in just over the next month of which nine are Premier. Nine are looking like very tough opposition. There is absolutely no way we are equipped to face this challenge. To hell with what happened last summer.
We have to prepare for the forthcoming onslaught with what we have got today. Glasner for sure will be fully aware of this serious dilemma. He has to think of the best way of dealing with it.
Overload is coming down upon us like a very big dark cloud. I am seriously concerned.

Balance and reasonableness is forbidden on these forums!
Controversy is the order of the day (and fun).
