Crystal Palace vs Kups match thread

As soon I was informed about the line-up, I concluded that unfortunately we would have to introduce some of our regulars from the bench.
It was refreshing to see the young debutants and Rodney. In the main they did their prospects no harm at all. They did not appear fazed by the occasion which speaks volumes for their character and temperament. Their parents must have been proud of them.
Not the result we wanted but all good experience for these players.
I enjoyed seeing the youngsters. I’m not usually someone who agrees with wholesale changes as in the early rounds of the domestic cups, because it’s usually unnecessary imo, but on this occasion I was totally in agreement with Ollie’s decision. It had to be done, especially as we were through and I’ve said all along I’m happy to get in the play off round and still be involved in the new year
As you say, some good performances from the young lads, a bit of inexperience as they let kups back into the game, but they fought back and a point will do

Another second half debacle in these European games.
Such a sublime goal by Uche, who I thought would not be able to continue when he went down injured.
Mateta made token efforts when the ball was delivered into the box.
Benitez got a hand to the shot which culminated in the opening goal and my initial thought was that he should have kept it out. I will have to review this on 'Highlights' to ascertain whether my judgement is sound or awry.

My understanding is that Uche played as an attacking midfielder rather than a striker at Getafe, so he is living up to the promise that he is a quick learner. He does not look entirely comfortable in the striking role yet, but he's giving it a real go, which is promising, and that goal was quite something.

I thought the youngsters did themselves proud, but I would argue Drakes-Thomas was the only one who I can see getting anywhere near the first team in the near future. Hardworking, quick, composed and a great delivery, and he's already a big lad for 16. The lad who filled in at left back did well, but there was a big step up in quality when Mitchell came on.

Esse has quick feet and a trick in him, but he still looks like he's trying too hard. I wonder if it might do him some good to get a loan to a Championship team, get some regular football and try to rebuild his confidence.

Glasner was correct though wasn't he? When he said that a team that qualifies for Europe for the first time in its history should invest, not save he was spot on. The team he put out yesterday was forced upon him through circumstance, but it also made a point - not enough players of sufficient quality to compete in all competitions.
Glasner picked that line up to highlight to Parish that we need players, that's all, we could easily give 4/5 first team players to start, gone 2/3 up then bought on some younger players, but he didn't.

No, Uche played as a CF, in a 442 line up, but the style of Getafe's is the same as Palace

Esse was very disappointing and his performance did not enhance his prospects of getting more minutes on the pitch. Perhaps he was trying too hard to impress, I am yet to be impressed by his contributions.
I will go further.
I don’t think it’s going to happen for him at Palace and I taken no pleasure in saying that.

There’s little evidence of a football brain, consistent wrong decision making, lack of discipline, inability to find space.
I hear from fans sitting behind Glasner that he less than impressed with Esse’s continual loss of possession.

This is not just last night, it’s in other games he has featured this season.
Yes, he’s young and hasn’t had that many opportunities but those opportunities have been given against the sort of clubs where he should really be doing much better.

I would even prefer JRS in that position who at least looks like he carries some threat and seems to understand his role and, in truth, even JRS is unlikely to make it at Palace.

To those who argue JPM and Kamada came good in the end , give Esse a chance, I would say citing two players who did ultimately prove themselves is hardly concrete evidence for other individual players to necessarily succeed.

In contrast last night you had 16 year old Thomas on the other flank who continually showed for the ball, looked composed, rarely lost possession and who looked like he had an understanding of the game even at his tender years.

I tend to agree. Glasner is smart enough to know that if his selection was queried he could fall back on the excuse of injuries and need for rest, valid enough to be fair, but I get the impression he had a point to make.

Drake Thomas was very impressive, King did okay not sure about the rest.

I hope that getting a taste of first team football will inspire these lads to want more.

Esse was the big disappointment of the night. He needs to go out on loan and get some game time.

Wasn't he getting that with Millwall? Unfortunately he hasn't been able to make the step up to a different style and what is required of him to fit into it.

You’re contradicting yourself Willo, one post you’re praising the youngsters, now you’re calling it a second half debacle!! Debacle is harsh considering the young team we had out, yes the inexperience may have showed with the quick fire goals we let in, but to go in at half time in front was a great effort I thought. At least it put us in a position to recover from letting kups back into the game, which we did, all be it just a point

Completely agree about Sosa. Esse has yet to impress me. Devenny had his moments tbf and Canvot's a youngster himself. I'm not sure what Benitez was supposed to do better - particularly with their second where Uche's failed attempt to put it behinf left him without a chance.
Sosa was being forced to play out of position to be fair to him.
He's left sided and was on the right.

Dean Benamar at left wing-back played with assurance, looked confident and did his prospects no harm at all.
Esse, once again,failed to deliver.

I thought Benamar looked great in the first half, possibly our best player.
All players faded in the 2nd half, but Benamar's form dropped so badly it made you question what was in his half-time tea.

I was merely stating facts that in three of our European games we have conceded in the second half resulting in defeats or draws. In two of those games we have led in the opening period.

Youngsters just aren't going to be used to the strength and intensity of the men's game. They need a few appearances and first team training to get up to speed and last a full match.

The game was a clue to how hard it can be for young players trying to make their way and I have some sympathy for Esse - it can't be easy to be singled out for criticism but I suppose his price tag makes him a special case among the young players. He seems to be a bit caught between his playing instincts and OGs requirements. Personally I thought he did OK last night.

Esse was unselfish, and didn't hold onto the ball too long, things that might have been a problem previously. Seems like he has been listening.
But he also didn't produce any magic.

I think you are right "He seems to be a bit caught between his playing instincts and OGs requirements."
Sound analysis.

I think this is fair and perhaps I've been overly critical of him.
It's about expectations, and I thought we had acquired a player who would be able to beat players, show a burst of pace and either cross the ball or cut inside and shoot.
I've seen little evidence of any of these things and hence my disappointment.
Perhaps he's a different type of player to my expectations.

Before we signed Esse, I enquired of a long-time knowledgeable Millwall supporter as to where he was deployed at the club.
His response was behind the single striker, anywhere across the pitch, normally coming in off the right.
