Crystal Palace vs. Fredrikstad match thread

Many of the other favourites for the competition were also in action last night. Fiorentina won 3-0 away, Mainz lost 2-1 to Rosenborg, Besiktas drew away. Alkmaar won 2-0 away, Vallacano won 1-0 away, Sparta Prague won 2-0 at home, Anderlecht drew 1-1 with AEK Athens at home

So a bit of a mixed bag but Fiorentina and Alkmaar seemed to have secured their places, unlike Palace, and we were fortunate with our opponents

We were very good in possession with only a couple of scares and hit the wood twice, but our passing in that crowded last third was not great.

Devenny and Sosa had a lot of possession/opportunities but were both disappointing.

Next week will be an even tougher test on their artificial turf, but I suspect (hope) we will scrape through.

Our opponents are way into their season and have already played 2 games in Europe.

My positive is that we are slow starters to a season (e.g. transfer market), we are clearly miles better, and we will build into this tournament, especially if we get new recruits.

Benteke was signed by Pardew that season and scored 9 of his 15 goals before Pardew was sacked in Dec.

Sakho played 8 games for us, including the one where he went of injured.

Clearly they both played a part under BFS but difficult to argue they were major reasons we stayed up that season IMHO
Fair enough. My take on that season re these two is that both of them (and Van Arnholt) had a huge impact - we looked a totally different team, maybe the highlight being the 3-0 win over Arsenal.

Last year, Chelsea struggled in the initial home/away versus Servette.
They squeaked by via a narrow 3-2 aggregate.

They then went 6-0 in the group stage, outscoring their opponents 26-5.

After that:
Beat FC Kobenhvn by a 3-1 aggregate.
Beat Legia Warszawa by a 4-2 aggregate.
Beat Legia Djurgarden by a 5-1 aggregate.
Won the title by a 4-1 score over Real Betis.

Turned out their toughest test was where Palace is currently!

Given that Chelsea fans tend to be entitled, pompous ***holes,
I wonder if they had the same feeling of gloom and doom after the Servette matches
that seems to have settled over the Palace faithful.

I remain optimistic that Crystal Palace will progress far in the UEFA Conference League 2025/26.

I tend to agree. The playoff and then the knockouts are our hardest matches

F'christ sakes, will you stop being so bloody sensible, you know it's not allowed on this site & besides, you're scaring the bejezus out the rest of us. Now, stop it, please. Thank you. Phew. 😀
sensible?🤪 how dare you🤣

Trouble is, it is bugging me how people STILL constantly bash parish and the club despite what we’ve achieved. They wouldn’t have a Scooby doo how to run a football club. I probably need to take a break, at least until the window shuts or something, or just do a bit of blocking 🤣

No that would disrupt the culture completely. 2/3 more is perfect for me. A top notch Eze replacement, another CB to challenge for a start and another solid all-rond squad player.
Think 4 is do-able without changing the nature of the squad or disrupting the culture.

All those profiles you mentioned are needed, plus ideally someone to rotate with JP… it’s not going to be Odsonne long-term, as much as he’s shown glimpses in the past I don’t see him being back at his best at this club, he’s in a rut and needs to find somewhere else he fits in for a last chance saloon.

Gallagher, Miazga, Sabitzer, and Hwang in before the deadline would do it for me. Something like that would allow this squad to go deep in four competitions.

If you read more widely on this subject than just this forum I think you’ll find that some of your views now form part of a minority view amongst Palace fans rather than the majority. It doesn’t make you a better fan by the way with this faux outrage but it does make you sound pompous as does laughing at your own comments which is not a good look.

What about in the real world? At the games where fans constantly back and support the team, I’m not in the minority there
I’m not saying I’m a better fan, I just don’t get why some on here can’t enjoy it a bit more instead of the relentless moaning and bashing of parish, I respect peoples opinions and I know we’ve got issues and I can moan for England like the next man, ask the wife, but I do wonder why some people bother, I did think just for a few months anyway it might have been a bit different after that little thing we did back in May
As for the little dig, I’m assuming then that you’re one of those that thinks he could do a better job than parish

No. Like most managers he’s at odds with the board and wants the best squad he can push them to bring in before the window closes
I think it goes beyond that.

He's on record that promises were made that there wouldn't be a repeat of last summer's late window.
These promises have been broken.

He said he didn't want Eze to go before being replaced and had intended to use him on Thursday until Eze's no show.
After Thursday he made a similar plea - don't sell Guehi until at least the next 2 games are out of the way.
He's clearly fearful because of being let down yet again by the board and there's no better lesson than experience.

None of his above requests could in any sense be deemed unreasonable.

Factually he's correct - our bench contained 2 goalkeepers, 2 players who have been told to leave, one veteran and one untried youngster.
Name another Premier League team fielding such a ramshackle bench?

He does have previous for this sort of thing at other clubs he's been at. Ultimately, he wants one of the top, top jobs and he just sees clubs like us as a stepping stone towards that.

one thing that has been underplayed on this thread is just how decent Fredrikstad were. Some proper technique and tricks, cancelling out Munoz for much of the game not through man-marking but through defensive organisation, their manager is probably better than the likes of Stephen Gerrard. Well organised and dangerous going forward. Good away turnout. Considering they're 8th in their league and were promoted last season they were a credit to their club. No doubt being well into their season helped them, but an away draw on their plastic will be a great result with our current squad.

They were promoted in 2023, came sixth in the top division in 2024 along with the Norwegian Cup win, and are currently 8th in the 2025 season. Season and a half since they went up now.

I agree though they gave a great account of themselves, and don’t seem to be the pushovers a lot of us thought they might be as late as Wednesday.

Still think we are in a decent position going into the away leg, but we have to be wary and take them seriously if we’re to hold onto that lead.

After that, league phase is a less daunting prospect. You can potentially drop four to six points and still be in the automatic zone.

Very disappointing to only get one goal , another would have in all probability sealed things for us. We should still wrap it up though, they posed little or no threat ,as they constantly concentrated on sitting in their own half and filling the six yard area under pressure. Wouldn’t be surprised if they do it again at home.
Our biggest worry is complacency as seen in the last moments of Thursdays game.

My fellow Palace guys
Steady on
Just watching spurs 2 up at HT against Citeh which is great.
With us?
Dont spoil the mood
FA cup
Charity Shield
Our great player gone for good money
Our wonderful manager bit pissed off
No losses since April

I too think we should be far more active in market and wonder why so pre-occupied with UEFA nonsense

This time last year offer us first ever fA Cup win plus Charity Shield plus Euro football we had all said yes!!

Still a week left so lets not slag everything off yet.

Lets get behind everyone and have some faith

Willo? Stop it!!!

All will come good

I thought Fredrikstad were pretty poor - if you wanted to put a level on it, like a league one side in the FA Cup or something. We often struggle to put that type of opposition away. Worryingly, they'll be miles better at home on their crappy pitch. Their fans seemed game enough and you couldn't fault the effort the team put in.

which reminds me - we beat League 1 Stockport 1-0 on our way to FA Cup glory. Just saying

I just think many other clubs supporters would love have someone like Steve Parish as their Chairman (local and a fan) but my thoughts are
1. Need to build this stand after so much talk
2. Support the best manager we ever had
3. Replace Dougie with like for like
4. Be more ambitious and forget survival
5. Get Guehi resign with proper wages
6. Support the best manager we ever had
