Crystal Palace vs. Fredrikstad match thread

Perhaps the expectation has not matched the reality.
He asserted he was "Promised" signings early in the window and I don't believe had 2 backups in the forefront of his mind!
True but no one expected the distraction of the UEFA business to arise and not knowing the situation with Eze and Guehi had implications on who might need to be replaced and how much money we'd have to work with.

Whatever Parrish did to p*ss off Pulis and Big Sam he simply can't do with Glasner. We all understand we can't over-reach ourselves financially but as OG said they knew Eze was going so the replacement should have been secured in good time - simples. Waiting for Eze to go and the cash to be guaranteed jeopardises the quality of the squad too much for Glasner's liking. Sure if we had got a marquee signing in b4 Eze had gone there was risk in case Eze didn't go, but on balance it was a risk that needed taking, this is where Parrish is falling short and disrespecting the manager's professionalism and ambition for me. Would securing Eze's replacement in good time have put potential buyers in a position where they could lower their asking price knowing we had to sell? Possibly, but on balance this is what needed to happen. And whatever the circumstances not having back-up centre backs at this stage is another big oversight that will not have impressed Glasner.

It would appear Oliver Glasner is not best pleased with how events have unfolded since that momentous FA Cup victory and perhaps his departure is sooner than many believe.
Perhaps he will hold a placard aloft with the words "I am a talented ambitious football manager, get me outta here"!

i have no doubt he will see his contract out, but his new job, probably in Germany, will be signed and sealed by mid-season. The shareholders are to blame. I'm not sure what SP can do, its not his money that is needed. He is basically a paid CEO trying to run Apple Corp on a Sinclair Spectrum.
What a wasted opportunity for the club. They stumble upon the best manager in our history and throw away the chance to grow the stature of the team.

Apropos the assertion that Glasner will "See his contract out", I have been in communication with a Scottish journalist and he commented 'A hae ma doots".

When people say 'pure Palace' this is it for me. Flashes in the pan, always get a nosebleed when we break through - we weren't far off being a proper side when Alan Smith had Southgate, Coleman, Armstrong, Salako, Gordon but Big Ron wouldn't buy Paul Stewart or replace the journeymen with players on a level of our stars, a 3rd under Coppell and the team of the 80s. Success gives us vertigo, that's why our ground has the sh*ttest stand in the premier league (and championship).

Yep we’ve been here before, team of the 80’s, early 90’s, us olduns go on and on about those teams and the memories they gave us, if this era all comes crashing down around us, I’ll be “whatever!!” Or “meh” if we end up back in the championship or worse, no-one can take away the memories, I’ve seen my team win the fa cup, charity shield and play in Europe now(hopefully for a bit longer) and I’ll bore people with it for the rest of my days
Missed opportunity? Maybe, but none of us could run the club better, we’re palace, just enjoy the good times while they last

And thats the reality of supporting Palace .

there's no reason why we have to be so fatalistic, we're not looking to be top 6, just upgrade the stadium, then we get 30+k fans in per week, potential signings takes us more seriously, and we're where Wolves, Leicester, Southampton and Brighton are, who may fall below us from season to season but who have the infrastructure in place to be a top ten or top 8 team in the long run rather than occasionally gate crashing - that's the ambition, not fantasy, just not mickey mouse under achievement.

Artificial pitch? Haven't we got a sodding great big one of those at the training ground for wet weather training (and European away legs too, now)
Yes a covered, full size top spec one that was only put in a couple of years ago when the academy was upgraded. Palace will train on it regularly - the plastic pitch will not be an issue/excuse

I agree.
It's this defeatist approach that endorsed Hodgson continually fielding under strength teams in the cup competitions so we'd get it out of the way quickly.

Glasner dared to dream, fielded strong teams and took the cup as seriously as the league.
That mindset took us to the first major trophy in our history.
Hodgson could have been manager for 30 years and we would not have won the cup as he thought there would never have seen such a possibility.
This is not so much a criticism of the solid Hodgson as an acknowledgement that daring to dream can bring unexpected results.

In SP's defence both were unavoidable from our perspective.
After Pulis did brilliantly to keep us up he went off to the world cup with either BBC or ITV and clearly had his head turned.
He then came back and came up with a bullsh*t story to get his bonus paid early so he could then resign. The offers that may have been informally made over the summer clearly didn't materialise.

Big Sam just wanted a job after his England fiasco so he could show he was a decent manager. He spent loads of money at Palace and 'saved' us from relegation even though we weren't in the relegation zone before he joined.

He supposedly resigned due to ill health/family issues and then took a better job a few months later. Luckily Palace were sensible enough to put a clawback into his bonus payment so we got it back - in true Big Sam style he got Everton to pay it!

It all sounds so easy doesn’t it? But NONE of us, despite know it alls thinking they do, would know the first thing about running a premier league football club in the modern climate.
We need a new stand, we need this player, we need that player!! Just maybe we’ve over stretched ourselves getting to the recent heights and we can’t afford the new stand or be able to throw money at new signings, none of us really know. It’s just a shame we can’t trust those that do and enjoy this little period of success however it turns out without all the bollocks.

Hopefully in 10 days time we’ve signed and owned a few players, thumped Forest and qualified for the group stage of the Conference. Maybe then the bollocks will stop and er can get on with the season without all the panty wetting.
And maybe last night’s game shows that the Conference League isn’t a worthless tournament with crap teams that we can beat with our under 21 squad.

Pleased to see Hughesy was voted MOTM on the Palace website.

He's such a crucial player for us and I always smile when I see him getting stuck in. Even the TV commentators remark about his 'tenacious tackling'. Quite a little star for us in his own right.
As previously posted he's the type of player lots managers would like but won't admit it.

I think it's perfectly valid to criticise our transfer window and have worries that Parish might have pissed Glasner off given that Parish did imply that we would acquire earlier in windows.

However, criticisms of Parish have to be tempered with the truth that since 2010 he's been at the centre of taking Palace to its best days. Also only he knows the real situation at the club and what we are and aren't capable of. Losing him would be much worse than a manager.

Unlike so many Chairman of clubs we know that he cares deeply about the club, has invested much personally and doesn't view it as a plaything.

Would Glasner be classified as a 'panty wetter' with the concerns he has raised?
