Crystal Palace vs Chelsea match thread

I think the difference is that the Man Utd keeper could and probably would have saved it. I think the rule is about a shot that is goal bound, i.e. a shot that is going to go in the net had it not hit the player's arm - a shot that couldn't have been stopped by the keeper or any other player. That wasn't the case with the Maguire incident.

Don't be too confident about Riad being the solution for this season if the rumours are correct that we're looking to loan him out with Sheffield Utd a candidate.
As he hasn't played for ages I suppose you could see the logic, but we better have some experienced quality lined up ( no Brighton reserve centre backs).
Maybe, and I do appreciate this might be a crazy idea, if you don’t have the players to play three at the back then don’t play three at the back.

Nah, crazy idea. We should just keep on losing in the exact same way and not change anything.

Radical! How about playing 2 centre halfs who have major game time experience along with 2 full backs who have likewise? You never know, it might just catch on!

I know right. When you keep getting overrun in midfield you could put an extra player in there as well. Or alternatively you could watch as they keep getting bypassed and fail to create anything

Watched the game. Largely a poor performance. Some observations.

Munoz back instantly makes us look more threatening. Big positive.

You could see from minute one we missed Hughes in the midfield. Madness that he doesn’t start.

Mateta is done. Uche from now on.

Whatever has gone wrong surely winning 2 home league games this season is enough to tell OG that he needs to change his formation or st least approach to games. But apparently not. Trying to hit teams on the counter is OK for away games but just sitting back and letting the opposition dictate the shape and pace of the game isn't working and now the other clubs have worked it out isn't going to work. Why can't he see this?
Playing without Wharton will be interesting; yes, he's good but not as good as he's been made out to be. No goals in 55 games for a midfield player is just not good enough. Particularly when no one else in our midfield can score or even try to.

I agree with you on JPM but if we stick with OG and his system I’d play Sarr up top with Johnson and Pino behind him. Not that either Johnson or Pino look like world beaters right now but they are the best we have

I think playing without him might help us. Force us to go direct and use some physicality. He’s not been good for some time now. Today was a bad performance. Passing was poor, out of position a lot. Very soft for their second goal, getting nowhere near close enough to the attacker (all be it it shouldn’t be left to him to be playing centre half) and topped it off with a daft red card.

Do you support a different team to me, 'happy with their lot' hardly something I've ever heard a Palace support say!!
You don't know where I sit, so don't presume from a few words on here that you do.
When I hear the words progressive and clubs like ours, I'm so glad that we do have Parish in charge, as we all know what happened to Charlton and we must push on to this magical next Level.
Keep living in the past that’s ok - but try to at least look to the future like 25000 were today.Your ok with what transpired recently humbled Parish will get his profits juggling the club future.Sometimes you can take it do far , but must realise to hand over the batton to take it further. Now is that time for Parish - Transition OG called it

He's maybe being hampered by the tactics because he has to do everything too quickly and one touch football isn't easy when it's every time.
It sounds like I'm digging him out and I don't mean to but not long ago he was being quoted /touted at mad prices - how many clubs who could afford our putative valuation actually need him that much?

He’s definitely finding it hard in a midfield two. Especially as other teams are clearly targeting that now. He has may fine football attributes but you wouldn’t describe him as an all action midfielder of the sort who might thrive in a two. He’d be much better in a three where I suspect he’d get more space and time to pick passes

Denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity

Ok, I understood that section. But I believe the interpretation is that it WASN’T an accidental handball because it wasn’t a handball full stop, because of the ‘hit another part of the body first’ exception. Therefore NO handball offence and so the Denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity does not come into play.

You're right but this season he's been outscored by Guehi, Mitchell, La Croix and Richards. Pino has more assists and from his 27 shots 20 have been off target.

Thoughts on today’s match. Upto Chelsea scoring we were in my opinion as good if not slightly better than them. However, Mateta missed a fairly easy chance and then Canvot made an awful mistake which cost us the match. Richard’s nearly did the same as Canvot. We got away with that one. Like many I thought Lerma should have started at the back with Hughes alongside Wharton. It also didn’t help that Richard’s played on the opposite side of the back three to accommodate Canvot. The balance of those 3 were wrong but wasn’t such a problem until the Canvot mistake. That was game over. A plus later in the game was Riad coming into the back three allowing Richard’s to move back to his preferred side. This balanced us better and it’s a must that those 3 start at the back against Forest. Hughes also made a difference but I appreciate game was over when he and Riad came on. Same goes for Sosa but he did do better than recent cameos this time. As for Mateta I’m not sure if we should keep him in or not? Reason being that defensively he is strong at set pieces? I’ve been saying for weeks now that we are looking like relegation candidates and that’s stronger now that Westham are catching up :-( However, I expected a defeat today but with players coming back and a back 3 selected as I mentioned above it’s just possible we could from next week start turning things around 🙂 For the first time since end of November I’m feeling more positive!

Slight caveat but who thinks Sosa actually had a good 15/20 mins ( not sure exact )
What I saw was ok and he didn't f*** up once .
Couple of good penetrating passes and a great corner .
Every cloud ?!? Eh ?

I agree. Sosa was decent when he came on. Granted Chelsea were pressing less but still as you say, silver linings and hope this is the way going forward.
