Crystal Palace vs. Burnley match thread

I've been thinking of other occasions in recent times when we have ended up losing after being two goals to the good.

Two spring to mind, last season v. Man City, and in 21/22 v Everton. I know the passing of times dulls the emotions, but I don't think either of those games were as hard to take as last night.

For starters, both were away from home (although for us that is often a positive). Once City got into their stride and got back into the game it was only heading in one direction, and we were, after all, playing the reigning champions. The Everton result was annoying but we were up against a team fighting for Premier League survival (Burnley are probably already doomed) and once they got a goal back played like a team possessed with a passionate crowd urging them on.

But I can't find any mitigating circumstances to excuse last night.

I was literally shaking with rage for the whole second half. Now that has subsided I can hit the right buttons on the keyboard.
The team; initial observation told me Glasner was more interested in his special friend, Kamada, than the team. Kamada would not get in the Burnley side or most teams in the Championship. What is he doing in our team? Second observation, Lerma at centre back. We have a choice of two other centre backs on the bench. Lerma is an adequate squad player but not first team. As it turned out, despite Kamada losing the ball so many times, the rest of the team did enough to deservedly go two up. At that point it looked like we would win 5-0. With no encouragement from our manager the team slacked off and Kamada set up Burnley for an attack which, on the second phase they scored from with no sign of Kamada recovering to save his bacon. Without a captain on the field or a manager on the bench, instead of pulling ourselves together and playing the simple football that gave us 2 goals, we collapsed and gave in. Quite why Lerma
was tackling Hendo to knock the ball over the line is beyond me. I was angry but not worried as long as Glasner took Kamada and Lerma off for Hughes and Riad and instructions for wing backs to beat players on the wing and put crosses in we would win 5-3. But with only Lerma being replaced and apparently wing backs told to cross the half way line then turn back and encourage the centre backs to pass across the back for as long as the crowd would stand, we ended with the result Glasner was hoping for.

Surely you can’t really believe we through in the towel deliberately at Macclesfield?? Knowing the flack and embarrassment that would come our way.

I do believe that. It is just a question of priorities. We had next to no chance of winning the FA Cup again, but we have a good chance of winning the Conference. Although after last night, that would also seem rather optimistic.

I remember us letting a 3 goal lead go and drawing 3-3 with stockport at home in early 00's.

I was waiting for this morning or by this afternoon so this seems more likely.

I remember that very well. Going back much further to the 1970s, I remember us taking a 2-0 lead against Man Utd at home, and ending up on the end of a 3-5 defeat.

I was present at this encounter.
Denis Law scored a hat-trick and George Best got a brace for the visitors.
John Jackson was in goal for us, with Alex Stepney at the opposite end.

I don't think throwing cup games is anything new. There have been many cases where teams have inexplicably lost to lower opposition, and the manager will always come out and say how badly the team played and how he doesn't understand what happened. Give me a break.

The way we are at the moment, I don't think it matters. Staying up has to be the priority.

I think bizarrely if it had been higher placed opposition I’d believe it more. I don’t think anyone wanted the humiliation of losing to Macclesfield.

Your last bit I completely agree with. The focus now is staying up. The Conference League (which we’ve been rubbish in anyway) has to be a distant second to that

I recall us taking an early 2-0 lead at home to Wolves in the 80s, with one of the scorers being Chris Jones on his debut. We lost the game 3-4.
Paul Barron spilled the ball into his own net. John Burridge was the Wolves goalkeeper.

I said as much 6 weeks ago, it can't continue but it has, therefore one has to scrutinise what the hold up is. Candidates are now lining up, many of them failures, but it's a tough game, some get the 15 minutes of fame and a big off and then on to the next job to rinse / repeat.

Agree. It looks like Glasner doesn't care and the negativity has impacted the players and their levels. If we lose at home to Wolves then I see no reason whatsoever as to why he should continue.

So many people have written here, I know, but it's a question of game management: when 2-0 up the message to your opponents is: if you want to win, you'll have to break us down because the onus is on you. Beckon them on then hit them on the break which is much more our style anyway.

Another impression I got is that Munoz just isn't fit. Am I mistaken?

And poor old Guessand at times was crowded out by 3/4 players with no one offering him an out pass - just no support and stranded.
