Crystal Palace vs. Brighton match thread

For the first time in years I slept through the 1am kick off time, waking at 3am.

Bleerily saw the result on the App. didn't read the match report, thought let's get up and enjoy the full replay.

What a bloody drama filled game that was, the goals, the send off's, Lacroix going down and 14 minutes of injury time. Lucky I knew the result, wouldn't have enjoyed watching that live.

Never seen Ollie so animated during those few minutes after Lacroix came off and he re-organised the team only for Guehi to be sent off almost immediately. What a manic few minutes.

Players heroic in the end, thanks Hendo. Hoping Richards is OK for City.

One question - what's the concussion protocol over there? In the AFL here, a concussed player cannot play for 11 days, anything similar in the EPL?
I wondered about the concussion thing too. I’ve googled it but not really any the wiser. The protocol talks about a ‘staged return’ to activity. He actually looked fine at the end of the game and joined in the celebrations but I guess he will be assessed by the club’s medical team over the coming days. Quite hard to pick a back three for the Man City game if he is also missing.

Bollocks.

Name a player booked for diving this year. Show us penalties not given for the same thing.

Ever seen Jotas one where he takes a micro touch, runs 3 paces, falls over. GIVEN.
It's not helped by the pundits/talking heads concluding their favourite strikers are "entitled to go down" on feeling contact and congratulating them for clever play when they do.

A word of praise for Mitchell.

It was pleasing to see the reception he received when leaving the field yesterday, but this is part was driven by the great atmosphere in the stadium and the fact that we were winning.

If you were starting with a blank piece of paper and a choice of players, Mitchell is unlikely to be a first choice candidate to be a LWB in Glasner's system.
But there aren't many better defensively.
He manages to be tenacious and competitive without giving away silly free kicks.
He's surprisingly strong and is rarely outmuscled or outpaced.
For a competitive player, he also has a good temperament and seems to rarely booked.
He doesn't get much credit because of his low profile and the fact that he's not one of our more eye-catching performers, but he's certainly one of our most reliable.

I’m still trying to get my head around what it is you’re asking for? Don’t rephrase though because I can’t be bothered with it.

There was slight contact mostly initiated by Nketiah who in my opinion then made a decision to go down with a theatrical late half swallow dive. I therefore get where the ref was coming from although from consistency arguments he probably shouldn’t have been given a card. I would like to see more cards for diving in the box particularly where there’s no contact as this needs to be discouraged.

Anyone else not a fan of the new sound system? Too loud and booming. Had to cover my ear at one point.

Or am I just getting old?
I agree, far too loud - what's the point? My chest was pounding and my ears were hurting and ringing afterwards. I am an oldie too but a warning that this is a good way of getting tinnitus, same as going to heavy metal concerts.

Yep. After just watching MOTD I can see why he gave a yellow for the dive. There was some contact but what screwed Nketiah was the way he half swallow-dived with his right leg splayed plus the dramatics were a split sec too late. Having said that, they don’t usually get given so we were unlucky in that respect. The other yellows for the sending offs were all reasonable.

Ps. If he had just normally gone to ground at the right time, it may have been referred by VAR due to the slight contact. 50-50 still though. Can’t grumble.
I too watched MOTD and agree with this , I thought Taylor made bizarre calls outside of the carding incidents .
We did get away with Wharton at Fulham , and that could really of changed things .
They say ( whoever they are ) decisions balance out by end of season .
So we are in a Semi and we will miss two players for Man City .Nketiah we can manage Guehi is a different matter .
Wonder if Richards will be back ?

I think someone needs to coach our players about how to win a penalty when we get fouled in the box. There's basically two things a player needs to do:
1) Make sure the ref knows there's been a foul and
2) Make sure the ref can't just let it go and play advantage

and it's the second bit we keep getting wrong.

Nketiah clearly gets clipped on his left leg, which he then manages to plant to continue his run albeit off balance. But then he needs to continue his run, stumble and not get the ball under control / shoot. Instead he just trailed his right leg and lets himself fall, which gives the ref an excuse not to give the pen.

Eze has also been fouled in the box several times this season with no penalty given, usually because he's just hit the turf (not doing step 2 above properly) and the Ref just thinks in the split second, well there may have been contact, but not enough to knock him over like that, so I'm not going to give it.

As an aside a quick minute or two of research as to how many pens we've had this season (we've scored 2, so I guess we've had 2 pens), I came across this VAR analysis which was quite interesting

That site only counts up the VAR decisions, and here's the "Incorrect" offside
Game: Leicester (H; Sept. 14)
Incident: Jean-Philippe Mateta goal allowed after incorrect offside, 47 minutes

They have looked at this picture.

What you don't see is this
1743953366030.webp

And it's the VAR team drew the line against the fullback's outstretched leg.

Also, this penalty was unbelievable, Bailey plants his foot underneath Hughes's toe, stays down until VAR investigates it so they can give it.

There are many calls that were s*** not mentioned, where is the disallowed injury time winner vs Wolves where Sa doesn't have his hands on the ball?

Short handed vs City I can understand, but with our full side back we can beat anyone. We can really defend, and our break is very dangerous.
I forgot we had Bournemouth. We can beat them but City, Arsenal and Newcastle. Unlikely. No one will want to get injured or suspended for the semi final and we should rest most of our first eleven for the Arsenal game.

City, Newcastle and Arsenal are tough games…for City, Newcastle and Arsenal. We are the form team and capable of beating anyone.

I like your optimism.

Not caught the eye save from other clubs sniffing around.

Unsung hero.

Great character shown by our players to get the three points.

And when the winning goal is scored by your favorite player against a club you despise, it doesn't get much better than that !

Then we come to Anthony Taylor. Content to let the game flow early on and then decides to reverse that approach and become pedantic. It's that inconsistency that frustrates players and supporters alike. I won't bother going over his decisions, others have already done that.

So we've had the supposedly two best referees at Selhurst Park in recent weeks, Taylor and Michael Oliver. Both were incredibly poor. Taylor should be demoted / inflicted upon a lower division.
That’s the normal Anthony Taylor approach. I’d love to see the stats on his yellow cards. He rarely books anyone in the first hour then gets card crazy in the last 30 minutes. Terrible referee!

Taylor likes the camera and will guess a lot of the time on decisions, I don't condone violence but I have sympathy with the frustration of the Rome fans.
