Crystal Palace vs. AZ Alkmaar match thread

Thoroughly delighted with the result in an entertaining game.
We struggled with their energetic 'Press' in the opening 15 minutes but gradually gained control and deservedly led at the break.
AZ Alkmaar were a young team with technical players but defensively they were found wanting particularly when the ball was in the air.
I was particularly impressed by midfielders Smit and Mignans and I suspect they will be acquired by bigger clubs.
Well done to our team.

12 points from 6 games should be enough. One of several teams with 11 points finished 8th last year. So two wins from final 3 games probably needed but I think there are advantages in finishing as high as possible. One more point is likely good enough to finish at least 24th and not get eliminated at the league stage
four teams got through on seven points and Hearts were the only team to miss out on seven. I know we like to make things difficult at times, but surely from our position now we should at least get into the play off round. It would be a monumental fcuk up if we didn’t

I don't know about anyone else, but i was on tenderhooks most of the game, i know i shouldn't have worried, still. The 'Standard' is reporting that Sarr has been nursing a 'small' issue with one of his hamstrings & he got taken off earlier than planned to protect him, good call, will need him fit & firing on Sunday. Also, they reported that the reason why Riad wasn't in the squad as originally planned is during training y/day he slipped & hurt his knee, so not included.

Mate, we’re palace fans, we were exactly the same last night, good performance in the end, but you can never relax, at 2-0 we were cruising but in good old palace style we let them back into it briefly. Even at 3-1, I said to someone if they score now they’ll be a panic on. There’s never a comfortable afternoon or evening watching palace 🤣

Given the manner in which AZ Almaar were found wanting in defence, once Lacroix scored I was feeling reasonably confident that we would emerge victorious. At 2-0 my face was wreathed in merriment.
It was only when Mijnans reduced the deficit that concern was etched across my brow, however the Sarr goal shortly after brought great relief to me.

Except for this night: Crystal Palace 4-0 Manchester United: Michael Olise scores twice in dominant victory

But I admit, was a strange feeling 😉

Good post. Hopefully we are looking at those two.

Olli has said in the past that he prefers to work with a smallish squad and 15 -16 is about right . I guess its easier to keep everyone happy with game time .

This is (the only) major flaw in his management, in my opinion and why he may struggle with 'bigger' clubs, you simply need to rotate when your in 4 or 5 different comps. He talks of player welfare in one breath and then doesn't use the squad effectively in games like tonight(see carabao cup vs LPool for a better example).

It may also be the reason for our success - having a small number of players who truly understand and are used to playing with each other in the system, but it's not very scalable when the need for rotation comes round.

Thanks for the update. Riad is having a tough time. In the training video he was looking good. Hope it is nothing serious and he continues to a full recovery.

Agreed. I was watching Smit and thinking how good would he be alongside Wharton for the next few years!

So I asked grok what way matetas last 6 pens went:

-Bournemouth: Bottom left
-Aston Villa: Bottom right
-Millwall: top right hand corner
-Liverpool: 1-1 (equalizer) Bottom right
-Liverpool: penalties bottom right
-aston villa: bottom right (missed)

Does seem he likes going to the right. Hopefully goalkeepers don't have it on their water bottles 😅
