Croydon

So was I after watching this bloke's video. How the town has degenerated since I last saw it.

I prefer to retain memories of the Kennards arcade and Allders. The new Whitgift Centre and the Royal Chinese restaurant where I had my first Chinese meal. Surrey Street market with all the chatter and atmosphere. Drinking in the Alhambra during my lunch break. Enjoying fish and chips, bread roll and ice cream for 10/6d in the Tavern in the Town. Seeing Pink Floyd in Fairfield Hall......and so much more. That's how I want to remember Croydon.
Some of those 60s builds are a bit grim though.

Most invitations nowadays are of the funereal kind, weekly I see people who were fit and healthy who are now in very poor health. Rite of passage I suppose.
When one reaches the 'Twilight' of life (I am 73 next month), such scenarios are prevalent.
Attending funerals and friends and acquaintances not in the best of health.

The SAS delivers the milk.

It really is heart-breaking to witness Croydon Town centre go to rack and ruin.
Presided over by very rich Local Government employees. 93% of jobs in Croydon paying a £100,000 + are with the council who also enjoy copper bottomed pensions. They are the ones to blame due to inactivity and concentrating on getting their nose into the trough.

I am advised that 'Brixton Village' is trendy as is the area outside Herne Hill Station but I cannot provide any veracity on this matter.
Balham, once not the most salubrious of area is now a sought after locality.
All over London "bombed out" areas are becoming gentrified especially those area that have good schools and good transport links.Everyone loves a bargain!

From a personal perspective I would NEVER decide to be resident in any location which comes under the authority of the odious toad Sadiq Khan. 👎

I haven't been to those for years, but I'm somewhat sceptical about them being desirable places to live.

I'm sure we could elect a mayor of your choosing, that democracy stuff is a bit of a drag.

When he says I'm at a loss for words we all wish he was. Also he's South African, Croydon is a walk in the park compared to Joburg
What a great compliment.

Croydon is not as bad as Johannesburg.

Those Croydon folk will be out celebrating tonight.

I was born in Croydon by the way. It used to be OKish 40 year ago. Now, I wouldn't go there if you bought me a free KFC.

Gentrification ? urban chic ? Fancy posh coffee and a tech-hub ?

its very naive to believe that money can insulate you from the urban grittiness. Have a look at the streets in West London, Zone 1, Zone 2. Basically, you could buy a house for ten or twenty million. And then still step outside into the street and be stepping over tramps, dogsh1.t, and stabby druggy yoof.

For sure, ghetto life is grim. Social Housing estates have become well dodgy. But millionaire mansions only insulate you, to a modest extent. If you want peace & quiet ? try a Royal residence in Scotland , or maybe Cornwall.

I never said or implied that just that people are putting fancy brass door knockers and plant holders to upgrade their area.
