Then they should not be a professional footballer.

In his first season Canvot made a few basic errors but OG saw that the rest of his game was really good and it was inexperience.

The best strikers take chances and if they miss a sitter they usually then score.

It was a poor performance and clearly Sage has a lot of work to do.

The body language of many of the players was disinterested. I guess some will be wanting to get away on loan or be sold so don't want to be there. Others may feel they have no chance of first team football and they are just making up the numbers until the key players return.

However what is worrying is that fringe players who do have a chance to break through did not take their chances.

Hopefully I will not remember this post when the real football starts.

The players that we have paid fees for - the likes of Johnson, Nketiah and Esse, have not looked to have put the past behind them from what I've seen so far. Doucoure looks like he's playing by memory, understandable after his injuries. Add a seemingly disinterested Rak-Sakyi, no fee but has had time around the first team squad.

Then we look at the Academy players and they display the same traits as when they play L1 and L2 teams in that dumb cup ( name escapes me ) - muscled out of it most of the time. Imray has gained good experience last season but he needs regular first team football at this stage of his career.
 
I suppose being World Cup year and so many of our players missing we shouldn’t be too disappointed. What it does show is how poor our squad is without those players. Don’t think anyone other than Matthews in second game showed any interest or ability. Feel sorry for those fans who paid good money to go to Como. It was hard enough watching it on my sofa via Palace TV :-(

JRS is such a dilemma. Clearly a decent player in there but woeful body language.
I remember a couple of years ago in a pre season friendly v Crawley ( i think it was the 6-3) he scored 2 great goals and looked up for it.
He got his loan to Sheff Utd soon after with loads of championship club interested.

Now he's had 2 average championship loans and is clearly miles away from our 1st team. With 1 year left of his contract he really needs to move on. I think he is championship standard and at his age should command a similar fee to Imray.

It could and should have been so much more though.

Second best in both games with Lens breaking fast on giveaways and Franca and Johnson (naturally) missing easy chances. It was Ozoh. He pressed the oppo, stole the ball and put Franca in for what should have been the opener.

I was thinking about this and, frankly, the Premier League was very poor last year. We were too. I'm thinking the Premier League has become a victim of the money.
The transfer fees and wages are implausible and unsustainable. But, most of all, there's no hunger from players. They don't even seem to give a toss about contract renewals now, with how easy it is to stir up trouble and leave, or sit on the bench and leave on a free.
I saw a few games of ours last season where it wasn't only us who were not up to scratch. The opposition were lazy and clueless too. Like no one cared if it were a one all draw. The games were League One standard at best. With several players who wouldn't make a League one team, as that would require effort and commitment.
 
It seems to me that these matches were purely an opportunity for Sage to see who might make it to the First Team squad. He won’t have time once all the World Cup players return. One player we have to tie up is Drakes-Thomas who put in the effort that others didn’t. You can see Chelsea, ManU, Tottenham etc sniffing around to lure him away. It was also a useful run out for Doucoure, for match fitness, and Ozoh for squad assimilation. It’s no surprise that Sage played them together for the matches.

We mustn’t forget that Lens nearly pipped PSG to the Ligue 1 title and won the French Cup. If we had made it to the final with the squad that travelled it would have been a miracle.

According to Brighty, Lens first serious game is a week b4 our Everton game, so they are a bit ahead of us in terms of pre season training , although to be fair they looked about a month better last night,

Did they have only 2 1st XI players on the pitch like us? I suspect not. They had just 3 players at the WC one for Saudi (KO'd out in group stage) 1 for DRC (Ko'd out in R32) and a reserve keeper for France, who didn't get any minutes.

I don’t see what all the fuss is about anyway, we’ve got so many players still away and in friendlies there’s obviously a lot of chopping and changing and youngsters out there who we know are not good enough and will be off to lower league teams on loan once the real stuff gets going

Agree it’s the wrong mindset. But I can’t help but think it’s not uncommon.

I was in Como yesterday and watched both ‘matches’ I was particularly interested in Doucoure, wanted to see how he’d recovered etc and also had a good look at JRS. I’m not sure the latter touched the ball at all, he looked miles away from being any use and hopefully he’ll be out the door soon (Charlton ?).

Cheick was also off the pace, but did get a few touches and made some half decent interceptions. I’m really concerned that he’ll regain full fitness though. I also wondered whether we felt we’d moved on from CD because we have a few decent MF/combinations since he was injured ?

I need also to mention Will Hughes. He was terrible. Had the touch of a giant panda wearing wellingtons ! 🫣😱
