We thumped Liverpool 3 times in 12 months. Now watching our mediocrity at Anfield yesterday. Gets me thinking, remember 'when we were Kings at the Palace'
Olise, Eze, Guehi etc etc........even Zaha. The economics of their Provenance was fantastic.

It was hurtful seeing those Worldies leaving Selhurst to ply their trade at the top tier of World football....and many of us were p1.ssed off at what little money we got in recompense. Well, we will probably not be having much of that problem again ?

I am reluctant to blame some of our new signings, running up and down the pitch, they are only doing their best - and they really want success. And also Glasner, he is only doing his best (talk about him on the other thread please). But if we sign another two or three big-money 'long honeymoon, slow starters, struggling to adjust to the new regime' we will be toast by Christmas.

At least we won’t be the first English team to win a European trophy and end up getting relegated, Forest ended up in division 3 eventually 🤣
Also Man. U, Villa and Spurs have managed this badge of honour 🤣

Correct. We win more Silverware and give it 5 minutes until the money-giants swoop in and take our best players....again.

Football is all about money. Dougie was an Elon Musk/Ingvar Kamprad type genius. He never paid over the odds and always got lucky. It now feels like we are buying second hand cars from Arthur Daly/Del Boy/Tony Soprano.

Frankly, Eze and Olise were relatively obvious buys. And we should go back to buying the best championship players.
The reasons for this are: cheaper (although not cheap), lower wages, but the main reason is how competitive the Championship is and how physically demanding it is. Because of that, Championship players who are standing out should be able to handle the rigours of the Premier League.
I'm loathe to buy other Premier League team's cast offs. There's the obvious reason: why are they selling? There's usually some issue. Look at Isak for example and our own Johnson. Or they're selling them because they're failing. Make your own minds up who that is.
The exception I would make is relegation sides' best players. Particularly ones with release clauses. We should be onto that like a flash.
First thing to do though is renew Sarr. I haven't heard anything about that. Without him we'd be f***ed. He's more or less our only real goal threat for most of the season. If the club can't see that then they're more stupid than any of us are currently imagining. Which is we're looking pretty foolish for our recent buys.

Blimey they’re expensive old second hand cars, good job we’re not buying new 😳🤣

We sell our best players and then pay a similar amount on dross replacements. Where’s the sense in that? We might just as well keep our best players in the first place.
I know it’s not that simple, but looking at our January signings I fear the worst for next season.

Shouldn't that be Boycie?

If we spend another £50 million on a player this summer I’ll be amazed…..Steve Parish still
looks like he hasn’t recovered from parting company with £85 million in January🤣

in recent years we always had a player who could pull a goal out of the bag when we really needed it. Even if they sometimes went missing. You all know who they were. Now who have we got like that -who can score when really need a goal ? Palace need that player even if they are only her for a few seasons !

Rak Sakyi once we eventually get relegated into his level 🤣

I think there's a valid point raised in this thread.
Look at Leicester.
Lived the high life with Vardy, Kante, Mahrez etc but their subsequent buying policy after cashing in on those players has been disastrous, and they now find themselves in Division 1.
It didn't take that long for things to go wrong.

I'm not sure how transfers operate without Freedman at the club, but assuming Matt Hobbs is now the key operator in player selection and recruitment , his work so far does not inspire confidence.

I do find it funny when freedman was here the whinging that went on about him was at the same level it is now , how people forget what they have said in the past about Freedman and now he is the best thing since sliced bread

Isn’t it true in recent years that we’ve kept players as long as it was reasonably feasible?
Bostock and Routledge were years and years ago now.
Geuhi is world class and nearly stayed 4 years.
Olise world class, stayed 3 years and moved to a giant club.
Eze not far off world class, 4 years and off. The latter two for significant profit.
Geuhi and Eze saw us win things we’d only dreamed of.

Brighton have been a feeder club for the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool…keeping their top players less time on the whole.
This happens.

The question as to whether current recruitment is as good is more pertinent.
Time Dougie came back for a fifth spell.

It's a concern for next season. Can't imagine us having much in transfer funds. The sale of Wharton would cover a lot. Rumours are Liverpool, Man City and Utd. I won't be happy with it but the more you think about our spending, the more likely it seems.

Until this season we were pretty good at replacing those players as well, Sarr although no Olise, has been a great signing and LaCroix was a definite upgrade on Andersen

It's lovely out in the middle East - I don't see anyone wanting to return.

It’s still hard to believe us, Crystal Palace parted with so much money in January, especially for two average at best players. So I think you’re right, Wharton may have to go, but even then I doubt we’ll be spending £85 million again, we’ll be back down to our usual of looking for bargains at around the £13 million mark

Agreed. But just like Top players, top backroom-staff is always in high demand by top-money clubs. Dougie may have outgrown the likes of us.

But whoever IS responsible for all our recruitment deserves to get it in the neck for the number of recent expensive Lemons. We can forgive one or two disappointing signings. But we seem to have at least a half dozen new mediocrities - not fit to wear the shirt.

Looking at the timeline, i posit that the pre versus post Dougie Palace-World are respectively like Capri versus Thornton Heath.
